WONT DOWGRADE!
my female 14mth dane is currently getting x-rayed for a possible wobbler.
im sure it will come back positive and i am looking for other owners who have gone through this.
the surgery i have been told is not 100% and i just want her to be comfortable.
what would you do?
i have a male who loves her to bits and they are both very active as we are on acres and
i couldnt possibally imagine keeping her quiet and confined to her run as she is only young.
money is not a huge issue but we are not the richest people and i dont think
we can keep paying for special treatments ect. for the rest of her life.....

i keep hoping the vet will call me and say she has a tick down her ear or somewhere unusual and that explains the wobbling!!!
i just hope its nothing confused.gif

Fingers, toes and paws are all crossed here for you that it isn't.... frown.gif

Try doing a search in the nutrition section - I found a little bit in there from people who have gone through it.

Doberdaves girl had wobblers, pm him he may be able to help you.

Im sorry to hear your girl is not well.
Some info for you HERE

CVI: Wobblers - is a result of pressure on the spinal cord in the neck region and results in a "drunken" gait & increasing instability. It it thought to result from a combination of nutritional effects and inherited traits and is considered a form of DOD (Developmental Osteodystrophy) along with such as OCD. Great Danes are considered at risk for Wobblers. CVI stands for Cervical Vertebral Instability.

I would PTS

Im so sorry to hear your girl isnt well.. Fingers crossed its not wobblers

There are two ways they can actually diagnose Wobblers, one is by MRI and the other is a Mylegram.
here are some very good links on wobblers syndrome too

Ive never had to deal with wobblers myself though

i called my vet and he says she is just recovering from getting her x-rays and he will speak to me when i pick her up.
that often means it is not good news....
a handful off people have told me they would PTS but im still researching and nothing seems to be 100% succesfull.
and post op will be just traumatising for her and you cant have them around other dogs!!! WT??

i dont know??

It's often just easier to talk face to face and that way he can show you the x-rays etc and have more time to talk to you.
Try not to worry too much. Hopefully you'll get some answers this afternoon and can discuss some further options.

Have a Dobe with Wobblers, vet advised against surgery, saying it's often not successful.
She goes to the vets about every 45 days and has an injection of Depredil 40MG.
It's not a cure, she is living a normal life, wouldn't know she has Wobbler's. For us this
was the better option of the three....... a) surgery b) PTS and c) the Depredil.

Good luck, I hope she will be ok smile.gif

There are some "rules" for carying of a dog with wobblers.
No playing with other dogs, no chasing of balls, sticks, etc, no stairs, feeding off the floor, walking the dog on a harness not on a collar.
Supplements/medications can be given for extended periods of time and if the dog is managed correctly they can live a relativelly normal life for few years.

If it does turn out to be Wobblers, please let your breeder know about this, as Wobblers is considered heriditary, and your breeder needs to know, so they can re~assess their breeding program. They may also be able to help advise you with your pup smile.gif

Here's hoping it not wobblers though smile.gif

Our girl still plays and races around, I have a young Afghan bitch who she
tears around with, honestly she shows no symptoms of having wobblers as
long as the injections do not have too long a time lapse between them.
She is living her life the same as she used to before she was diagnosed.
However what works for one may not work for another. My vet did say if
it's diagnosed and dealt with within the first 24 hours then the option we
went with works well. He has another Dobe that goes to the clinic who also
has wobblers and is on the same medication as our girl, and she also is
doing fine.

i have spoken to my breeder and he is going through his books now because he kept a male from that litter..

Fingers and toes crossed for you g8dane. Hope things turn out wellxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It doesnt just develop overnight.
Its a progressive desease, the dog might have had it for months already, you just didnt notice slight symptoms.
Danois
oh gr8dane - that is not good to hear.

Do you have a definite diagnosis yet or were the x-rays just the preliminary step in diagnosis - sorry I'm just confused after reading greatdanegirl's post and obviously have a great interest in this topic too.

How soon before you can see a specialist to discuss options? Hopefully it can be managed with the injections.

Thoughts with you.

My beautiful Dobe had wobbler Syndrome, x-rays at 5yrs showed this. My vet said it had started to develope about 12mths before and he also advised against surgery. She was placed on a drug called macrolone for the rest of her life but she had her good days and some bad ones. The drug did have some bad side affects too. She lived for another 5yrs and it did cause her death. crying.gif crying.gif

Some dogs are affected more than others and it's a common Decease in Dobes and Danes my vet said and when you do the research this seems to be the case. Wobbler Syndrome is IMO a very cruel Hereditary Decease and I never want to go through that again. crying.gif crying.gif My beautiful girl passed away 4yrs ago and is still missed and will never be forgotten. crying.gif crying.gif crying.gif RIP.
Dane Chick
I'm glad your breeder is looking into this for you smile.gif

Now go on up to the breed subforum and post pics of the fur kids in the dane thread smile.gif

it is just the first step and i have just started her on a 10 day course of macrolone tabs so i will see how she goes.
she is very energetic and still very happy so i will just have to wait it out and
see what happens...
