How Long Are Males Fertile After Neutering?

i always assumed that a male pup that gets neutered before six months will pretty much lose interest in sex... but a male that is neutered later in life will still eagerly mate with a female, and even tie - though obviously he cannot impregnate her.

if a male was neutered then tied for 20 min's a week later is he still fertile?

once there balls are gone..thats it isnt it??

someone is asking me this and i have to ease her mind.

thanks...

Well Im not sure but I know that testosterone (sp?) can stay in a males system for up to about 8 weeks, but I doubt that any little swimmers could survive too long. Where would they live?

If there's no testicles, there's no sperm.

I wonder if they are confusing neutering with a vasectomy. Neutering means no testicles, therefore no sperm and to the best of my knowledge cannot go through the motions.

Vasectomy they can still do it all, just no sperm can get through but there is probably a window where there can be a chance of getting a bitch pregnant for a few weeks after the operation.

Really??? I assumed that after the testicles were removed that was the end of it.

Sperm can remain in the ducts for up to about 2weeks at the most. It's unlikely that a male could get a girl pregnant within this time, but technically, it is possible.

Years ago I had a male Rott who had been used at stud quite a few times, he was later neutered (testes removed), he used to service my bitches everytime they came into season. He did this for years. Talk about all in the mind, I guess he just did not forget how to do it.

Had 2 afghans. Dog 14months. Bitch 3yrs. Both entire. Ran together as house pets. He never showed interest in her when she was in season. Bitch came into season and i decided to have him castrated just to be safe. He came home from the surgery and two hours later i hear screaming from another room. They are tied. Remained so, despite my efforts, for quite a long time. Rang vet. Vet said if mating not wanted then desex the bitch when season is over and it's unlikely she would be pregnant but would check during surgery. I did this. She was carrying 12 puppies. Vet told me there is viable sperm for several days after castration. You CAN impregnate after testes are removed.

As with many veterinary issues, vets' advice can differ greatly as can the affects in each individual dog.

I always thought that during mating in dogs/horses/humans, the sperm does not come directly from the testes but a gland, maybe even the vas deferens(not sure exactly). It is then replenished from the testes, either when needed or after it is reabsorbed into the body, when it is no longer fresh so to speak.

I would definitely keep a newly neutered male away from any in season girls for a while just to be safe.
When OH had vasectomy, Dr told us three months.

ETA: Which makes me think, during a vasectomey, the Vas are cut and tied. So it has to be somewhere between the Vas and the penis. This means it is impossible for it to come from the testes directly during ejaculation.

For the record...we had a 2 year old who was desexed as a pup tie with a bitch...so it doesn't really depend on when they were done.
