Hey there, strange topic I know.

I went to my local oval this morning, with Jakey my desexed boy, a lady I sometimes see comes down with her 3 desexed BCs and one undesexed juvenile kelpie bitch she is using to work sheep.

Anyway Jake, who has no interest usually in other dogs, when he is "working" with the ball, was in LOVE, followed her round, sniffing, her rear, playing, then mounted her.

The lady said she wondered if she were coming into season as she had been "urinating a lot". Not sure what that has to do with it, but (setting aside the fact that she really ought to be more careful letting an undesexed female run around an off leash park when she is not sure she is in season and she is under 12 months), I was pretty surprised that Jake was so interested. He has been desexed for over 4 years and really is not interested in other dogs that much these days.

He was very persistent in mounting her (though we did pull him off) and I am pretty sure the girl was well in season as she was standing and moving her tail aside (we used to have undesexed Welshies in the UK and bred from them so I vaguely remember the signs).

My question is, can they actually mate and tie when they are desexed? I would have thought not. Its not like they are firing blanks, they have nothing to fire!!!

Also I understand you can chemically "castrate" a male. Does that stop them mating? Similarly if you give them a vasectomy?

You can chop their balls right off and they can still serve a bitch. AA's desexed male will do it on a regular basis if he's allowed near the bitches  My friends GSP would also serve anything and everything that was in season, he too had no balls for years.

I always thought Jake was gay, he preferred boys to girls!

Now I think he would probably have been the "town rooter", that look of concentration was priceless

Another question: Will an undesexed dog serve a desexed bitch?

I was silly and thought that a de-sexed dog could not mate until........
My girl came into season, :D I'm now scared for life,

My boy and girl got tired about a month ago now,
Its all funny now  , but at the time :)

This was something I only learned recently on this board and I had no idea. I thought that once they had lost their jewells that was it. Vasectomy makes no difference except no sperm can get through. There would be a lot of digruntled human males if a vasectomy affected their performance....

It does seem surprising, as I would have thought that removing testicles would = less/no testosterone?? Obviously the desire or instinct is still there on some level...

He might try. Sometimes desexed bitches seem to smell attractive to entire dogs, especially if they have a UTI or some other form of infection. However it's unlikely he'd succeed, there is nothing on this earth more savage than a bitch that doesn't want to be mated  I have never known a desexed bitch that would allow a dog to mate her, perhaps it has happened but it would be a very rare occurrence.

Yep, my two can and have mated/tied, both when my bitch was entire and now she is desexed (male was desexed years before).

"Also I understand you can chemically "castrate" a male. Does that stop them mating? "

My story: Tilly was an elderly girl Chihuahua and because she had huge inguinal hernias we decided she probably wasn't desexed although it was assumed she was too old to come on heat.

Then I adopted Rover, a 16 years old toy Poodle who, we assumed, was desexed. However it turned out he had undescended testicles.

Rover was totally and absolutely OBSESSED with Tilly; he used to follow her around, stand over her (she fitted underneath his tummy), suck her ears and generally just could not leave her alone. Because of his age, it was too risky to surgically desex him so we tried chemical castration. No effect. We then gave him Tardax (spelling??). The combination took the edge off but lasted only 5-6 months.

He never actually mounted her, but the obsession had to be seen to be believed.

Oh, and years ago I had a male Maltese who used to tie with his mother when she came on heat. I finally managed to get her owner to have her desexed  :). He very rarely played with other dogs in the park, but if he did, it was generally just to try to mount them.

Just to add after the last poster Jake is DEFINITELY desexed as I met him (with testicles) at Staffy Rescue and he came to me (without testicles) having been desexed the week before I got him.

This was also definitely about procreation and not about dominance as he does occasionally show dominance to other males and this was something entirely different.

A part of me felt a bit proud of Jake for having it in him - how sad am I?

He didn't ask me for a cigarette afterwards tho!

That's amazing. So you have a desexed male who has mated and tied with a desexed bitch, I have never heard of that happening before. A desexed dog mating an entire bitch is not uncommon, but an entire dog mating a desexed bitch or a desexed dog mating a desexed bitch is a little more unusual.

Just shows that you can always learn something new on DOL

my male golden retreiver Onslow was desexed at age 4 months old
my male coolie was a rescue and came to me about aged 1, desexed straightaway

We were living with a friend who breeds coolies. One of her bitches came into heat, Onslow had no idea about anything at all whilst Flashy was constantly around her mounting her as she was him and encouraging him.

So maybe it depends on their interest on the age they are desexed?

I worked with a girl who had a male foxy and got a silky bitch. She had the foxy desexed before the silky arrived but decided to leave the girl whole until she was 2. The girl came on heat and was mated by the foxy. She didn't worry as he was desexed. Two months later she had 4 pups no other dog had been able to get near her and the pups looked like him. I Didn't believe her till she showed me the photos.

Both our boys are desexed but Sophie and Mac arn't. Mac just came into heat and the boys don't even notice, nor does she really. They've been payign a bit of attention to Sophie because I think they can smell soemthign not quite right.
When Sophie is in though, you definetly notice! She's awful to watch, she'll grab on of the bys and sneak ointo another room with them.
Neither of the boys know what they're doing but some instinct is still there.
