Microchiping A Puppy

Hi,

Just wondering if it is a breeders choice to microchip a puppy before selling? or doesn't really matter as anyone can get a dog microchipped.

The puppy we are looking at comes with:

Dogs Victoria Registered

Immunised

Wormed

Vet Checked

Thanks

found this on Dogs Victoria:

What you should expect from the person who sells you a puppy:

•A vaccination certificate which shows vaccinations given, when the next ones are due, and evidence of the puppy's age (it is against DOGS Victoria's Code of Ethics to sell a puppy under 8 weeks of age).

•ANKC Registration Certificate (papers)

•When it was treated for worms and how often it needs to be treated in future

•A feeding chart

•Information on the puppy's likely nature, temperament, size and care requirements.

•Details of any hereditary diseases or health problems which are known to affect the breed.

•Information on responsible pet ownership, in particular care and welfare of the puppy, the time and facilities required for proper management (socialisation, exercise, adequate fencing, sufficient space and proper shelter)

I think in Vic pups are chipped from 12 weeks onwards , so is possible to buy without , recommend that on your first vet visit ( within 48 hours of bringing puppy home) you request the vet to chip and arrange the chip to be registered ASAP

All vets can chip , they may want to wait until at least 12 weeks if pup is a toy breed but rescue have no probs chipping earlier

It's illegal to sell a puppy if they haven't been microchipped in some states and territory.

All registered breeders will have to microchip their puppies before selling..

Does Vic have compulsory microchip laws and does DogsVic have microchipping as part of the CoC?

WEF 1st May 2007, to register a dog in Victoria (dogs must be registered at 12 weeks old) a puppy MUST be microchipped. Without a microchip you cannot register the puppy.

A lot of breeders chip their pups prior to them going to their forever homes. From there it is upto the new puppy owner to transfer the ownership details.\

ETA - Dogs Vic do have microchipping days which will make the cost a little less ($25 on the day from memory)

ok cool.

So you have to mircochip and register your dog before 12 weeks old but the breeders don't specifically have to mircochip thier pups before selling them?

Probably easier this way as you don't have to transfer ownership details etc. Just do it when you get it done.

Thanks

At this stage chipping is only compulsory for commercial breeders with more than 10 breeding bitches, pet shops and welfare/rescue.

So small registered breeders aren't under obligation to chip.

Some breeders just don't like doing their pups at 8 weeks, that's ok. They need to be chipped by 3 months to be registered with your council though.

The thing is that here we need to submit the microchip registration form within two days, so in a DogsVic registered litter, all the pups are registered to the breeder, the breeder then needs to sign a change of ownership for every pup and that needs to be submitted- double the paperwork. Some breeders find it easier that the owners get the dog chipped within 4 weeks and then it ensures the pup has been checked by a vet too. Perfectly legal. :mad

I think all registered breeders should be chipping their pups before they go for other reasons but if they tick every other box in terms of what you're looking for in a pup then I wouldn't not buy a pup for that reason.

When I brought my puppy he wasn't chipped. The breeder liked to wait until the last puppy vacc to get it done and I got him 2 weeks before it was due. They are registered breeders and the pup is registered with Dogs Vic and all the other requirements were met so I had no prob with getting him chipped myself.

perfect :mad

I can see how it will cut down on the paperwork etc. I will be taking our puppy straight to the VET and getting him checked out and possibly microchipped if they will do it at 8/9 weeks.

Thanks for everyones help & was super fast!!

Breeders should be chipping their puppies, regardless of the legislation. Chip number goes on the receipt and it's a little bit of peace of mind and security for the breeder and and buyer.

Should the puppy go missing, at least you can prove it is yours or be contacted if someone finds it.

Unfortuantaley the Victorain legislation is slack in regards to ensuring breeders microchip their pups.

So all sorts of excuses are used, to small it hurts etc etc.

I responsible breeder will microchip when vaccinated.

IMO

My other beef is that the breeders details are not kept as a third option by the registrar

I chipped before we were required to by law. I did it because I would always know ( by the chip number ) that I had bred a certain dog or bitch. I've never had to rescue one of my own from a pound but I have on a couple of occassions thought one could be mine and called with the chip details to find out.
