cathya Posted March 21, 2011 Share Posted March 21, 2011 Thanks everyone for all your loving words and thoughts for our Mack. I'm so touched at the obvious care and love for this beautiful boy. He's going quite well during the day, not so good at nights. Am desperately trying to get him to sleep on his new comfy bed rather than on the hard timber floor. Have tried treats, cuddles and the lot but he still goes back to the floor. He will get on it if I sit there with him but as soon as I move, he does - as usual, he follows me everywhere! We are having a great time with me trying to get out the door to work :rolleyes: Don't know if the sleeping on the hard floor is habit? Any advice here is welcome including whether I should just leave it be, but I figure the bed will take pressure off his hips! Maybe he's too warm on the bed and the floor is cooler..? He does have a lot more fur now :rolleyes: I have trouble getting the dogs to sleep in their beds too, they like to hang out in it when I'm there but it's straight to the floor as soon as I stand up! Bonnie flat out refuses to lie on hard floors but Indie flat out refuses to sleep in the dog beds, on carpeted floors or even on our bed. He will last a few hours on our bed but only if the fan is on him, then he will go sleep on the floorboards near the screen door. Even if it is freezing and raining, he still wants the back door left open, failing that he lies on his back, all legs in the air and his stomach resting on the freezer/fridge. Generally in Winter he moves back into the dog bed and snuggles upto Bonnie, well, most nights. Wouldnt worry about it too much. Ive tried most things to convince Indie to stay in bed, mainly to stop him balding his elbows, but to no effect. Only solution would be to crate him at night so that he has no choice but to sleep on the soft bed. Cant wait to see his photos!!!!!!!!!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
moonbaby Posted March 22, 2011 Share Posted March 22, 2011 Probably is just too hot and not in the habit of such luxury, maybe try a trampoline bed or those ones made of that green or black weave stuff, not so warm but not as hard as the floor. He actually got onto his bed last night and slept for about half an hour so I got into bed feeling very pleased about it but then up he got, wandered into another room and dropped to the floor and slept the rest of the night! One taken with some of his four legged family checking out what is happening in their street, one off to the groomers for his twice weekly socialise with the girls there (in his favourite place - the car ) and have also included one with him drinking water out of a bucket and an old photo of him at the shelter drinking water out of a bucket just so you can compare his weight and fur!!! I also have to say I have a weakness for big scruffer dogs and brindles, your dogs are just devine and now with Mack in the mix, you have a gorgeous pack. Wal has been my special mate (if I can say that) for such a long time and now he has a special mate - Mack! Wally and Mack are great mates and have very similar natures and Wal is VERY protective of Mack! Amazing really, seeing Wal used to not get on with other adult males and I had two very expensive dog trainers tell me there was no hope for him so it's been a good thing for Mack and for Wally. Mack and Wal hang out together 24 hours a day. Wal growls at the others if they barge into Mack or try and eat his food and he goes outside to check on him if he takes too long. Wal gets very upset if Mack goes out without him (eg to the groomers). I certainly don't think I'm anything special but dog rescue can't help but make a person better I think, especially when it comes to dogs like Mack. He definitely brings out the best in me. I've met (in person and through DOL) some amazing, compassionate and caring people in rescue which has really opened my eyes to a whole new world of 'other focused' people which isn't always so apparent out there in the non dog rescue world which can, at times, be disheartening to say the least. It has even opened my eyes to some people in the community that genuinely care about rescue and want to help in anyway they can. I find that while rescue can be heartbreaking, it has helped me see just what I (and others) am/are capable of, what my limits are, and that we should never stop looking for that thing in life that makes us feel whole. At almost 50, I've finally found that and Mack has certainly contributed to that feeling in a huge way. Everyday, I feel so glad he came to be with us, for him and for me!
