Rainers Posted October 15, 2012 Share Posted October 15, 2012 I have the possiblity of having a dog to show again soon but I'm trying to figure out how hard it will be if I go by myself with my 2 year old. Has anyone done it? Most times I can probably take his older sister or my OH will come, but if I can't...? He's not the type to sit down for looong periods. Carluke Posted October 15, 2012 Share Posted October 15, 2012 He won't be 2 for ever, many people have done it, my mum did it with us as has my sister. I guess the question is do you want to?? I'd much rather watch a 2 year old playing and learning about animals than listen to someones abandoned dog bark ring side for hours because they are away socialising. I do want to do it, Ewan LOVES dogs and I think he'll really enjoy it, the problem I will have is curbing his enthusiasm so he doesn't go around trying to hug every dog he sees! He's only 21 months so he's not quite able to understand everything yet. Luckily he's gentle with dogs, easier to control a gentle dog loving toddler than one who hits/pokes. He can have a chair, cushion, toys, food, even a little DVD player set up in there to keep him occupied. He can't get out and run up to any and every dog - as we know that would be inviting trouble - yet he can move around quite freely in your space. Try and find a nice person to keep an eye on him while you are in the ring as you can be assured they won't care where you are until you are in the middle of showing your dog. Sometimes you'll also find there may be other family people about and you can share child watching duties while parents are in the ring. Kids have an extraordinary knack for hurting themselves/needing the toilet/ etc etc just before you have to go into the ring. If you have someone to help watch them for the ten minutes that you go in the ring you'll be much more relaxed. Even many non-kiddy people don't mind watching kids who are not tearaways. The pen set up around the gazebo is great, as is buying an actual tent with zip up doors. It gives little people somewhere safe to be and protects their toys from getting lost as well as keeping them out of the sun. Ours has a front room that is all screen and the kids love it. Not meaning to make a child sound like a dog but we always bring "high value toys" to shows - ones that we've set aside that are special but only come out for shows or events where we really want the little person to be absorbed for a few hours. I think the puppy pen around us would be good as he is the kind who likes to run after balls etc. I'll also bring a laptop and he can watch at least one movie or so.
