Dinner Time Routines

Up until now Brandy has been locked away during meals in the bathroom via a baby gate. This has been the case for about 6 months and having a gate across the bathroom door is getting annoying.

Jager has always been feed in the kitchen / dining area and has had a bob-a-lot or a kong wobbler so that he has to knock it about to get his dinner. Otherwise he scoffs the lot and is done in 2 seconds. I don't mind feeding them both in go-slow type bowls if they work, but am I asking for trouble if I feed them in the same room? Not next to each other but on opposite sides. Neither of them are food aggressive and they will be supervised all the time etc. Each of them currently gets a stuffed kong with dinner as well as it takes longer to eat.

Also Jager has grown up with every time we leave to go to work he gets a stuffed kong. Since we have been leaving Brandy out of the pen during the day, we haven't done this in case it caused issues etc. Is there a way to incorporate something similar? At the moment they are each getting a denta-stick or similar when we leave but they don't last long and a frozen kong will last Jager 30mins.

Would like to know how others feed their multiple dog households? And how you keep your multiple dogs busy while you are at work.

Keeping them busy is less important. We have cameras set up to watch what they get up while we are out and they just sleep on the lounge all day.

Mine all eat in a row next to each other, and don't take a second look at any of the bowls until each dog is finished, then they all swap to lick them clean, its quite funny! They will leave each others bones and kongs alone too.

I am however aware this isn't ridiculously common.

Maybe worth just seeing how your two go with a kong each while you are present?

If there are no issues you are probably ok to leave them with a kong in different areas.

When i am feeding out of a wobbler i put them in different rooms, they have a wobbler or treat ball each, otherwise the one doing all the work never gets the food as the other two just gobble it up before the worker gets a chance to

We have bought a second wobbler so that they would have one each. Will try giving them a kong each and watch how they go.

Mine go to the backdoor with ANY food, even the pilfered stuff..idiots. Haha. So dinner they go outside, sit nicely and then get what they're having (easy with raw as it's usually a lump of something) and they head to opposite ends of the yard and do their thing and then swap.

Then they come in and clean the cat bowls and the routine is complete! Haha.

Breakfast, my puppies now eat together because they get the same dry food and much the same amount. Dinner is higher value and Roo generally does a wee and a poo as soon as he's finished. He eats outside on the deck and Bunny eats inside. Once done rheyre allowed to examine each other's bowls for scraps which there are never any. Tonight is fish night so I imagine there will be gobbling.

Maverick (malamute x b'collie) & Willow (westie x) eat next to each other on kibble nights, there's never any issues and Willow is generally finished first as Mav likes to chew each piece of kibble one by one..

Higher value dinners that involve chicken wings, necks or frames ect Maverick eats outside & Willow eats inside.

My whippet puppy who is now 5.5 months eats all her meals in her crate in the same room but away from the other guys.

My girls mostly eat about 2metres apart when it's normal dinner (usually dry) and even though Nala scoffs she waits until Cleo is done and then they do a swap n check of each other's bowls.

If it's a high value meal like a frozen chicken carcass, they are separated. Never had an issue, but don't want one. They can eat pigs ears in close proximity but bones are a bit different.

I haven't used a kong wobbler in ages...not really since I got Nala. Only because I can't control who gets what unless I separate.

They keep themselves occupied in the days with sunbaking, patrolling the boundaries  and following whomever is home (FIL is home most days and does a lot of work outside). Occasionally we treat with a pigs ear when leaving, but we keep it unpredictable.

Our three have always been fed in separate rooms (but within view of each other) and we used to let them check out each other's bowls after they were finished but we had an unexpected fight last year so have a very strict routine now. They get fed in pack order, still in the same places but the last one to be fed is outside and the door stays closed now until everyone is finished and has walked away from their bowls. Bowls are then picked up in order of being put down and only then can the outside dog come in and join the other two. One of us watches the whole time. Treats are dispensed similarly. Ours were not food aggressive but the youngest one just happened to pee off the middle one while she was still eating that one time and both ended up needing surgery for wounds so we don't want to put them in the position of it happening again.

We have 5 dogs and they all eat in the kitchen together, each one has their own spot. I feed in pack order that never alters, they only go to each others bowls once they are empty and I pick them all up as soon as they all walk away.

We have had many fosters and used the exact same routine.

The last time I had my own pack of 5 (not fosters)I could also put them out with a bone each and there was no issues, I wouldn't do it with this group at this stage without supervision mainly because two of the dogs are under 12 months old.

Mine eat together, in the kitchen, but if I don't watch my little one she will nibble off both plates even though it's the same damn meal!

Like everything else in our house every day is different - inside, outside, separately, together, crate, pen, kitchen, bowl, Kong Wobbler, puzzle toy, scattered on the ground, training...

Pups are always locked away or outside and I will supervise the adults if they are eating together. Cats are also locked away as they don't have a lot of impulse control either. I don't like seeing animals under pressure to gobble food (although mine tend to do a pretty good job of that on their own!)

Our dogs get fed wherever. Sometimes in bedrooms, sometimes outside, sometimes in the dining room, sometimes in the powder room, and sometimes in the kitchen. The two bitches are separated because they hate each other, so they eat separately, and the male gets put in with either one of them. Puppy has to eat alone or with the male because she will try and stick her head in the other dogs' bowls, and he is the only one that tolerates it.

For something like brisket bones or chicken frames, we have to be careful, as one of the bitches resource guards (only with other dogs) and will only settle and eat her bones in the crate. The other two can eat their bones together without any issues.

No one is allowed to sniff anyone else's bowl until everyone is finished eating so as to avoid fights.

Mine are fed separately, Kaos and Nitro in crates and Diesel loose in the kitchen. They are all fine around food, it is just me being careful. Zoe was the problem, she was a resource guarder and dog aggressive so I started the separate routine when I had her and haven't changed it.

With a food aggressive dog in the household I have food management down to a fine art! Everyone eats inside. The problem dog is crated before the others come in and before I start preparing the food. The other two eat loose in the kitchen but I do not allow checking of each others bowls. The two normal dogs can eat bones together but I supervise and there is no swapping.

Mine all have their own spots for meals. I will call out "Food stations!" and they al rush to their assigned spots LOL. I put the bowls down in order of slowest eater first to inhaler last so that they all finish at about the same time - otherwise the fast eaters will start a fight over the slower eater's bowls. When they have all finished they rush around and check out each other's empty bowls LOL. They await the release command before eating, but they are released one at a time (otherwise the fastest eaters would finish first and try to steal...)

New fosters I feed separated by a baby gate so that they can see and hear the others eat. They will pick up the routine surprisingly quickly and usually witihn a week they can have a food station with the others.

Bones and chew treats such as hooves and antlers I will give them all one at the same time, but only when I am home to supervise or the resource guarder will steal them all and sit on them like a broody hen. Sigh.

Always fed in the same order in the same places. Benny's bowl goes down first just outside the kitchen because he eats slowest. Hermon is second in the laundry because he doesn't do others near his food. Back to kitchen, escorted by Brandi. Paige next yo Benny then Brandi who is aggressive with food last by the door. Everyone knows the order and their location. No one panics or stresses. Benny finishes, heads out for a pee. Paige finishes, checks Benny's bowl, then out for a pee. Brandi finishes and checks everyone's bowls. Hermon done, out for a pee. Then Brandi outside.

With my husband and my 2 dogs home we have a pack of 8 at my mum and dads place but they all have their place in the open plan living room/kitchen when it comes to dinner and a distinctive order of feeding.

1st Fudge outside on the verandah - he can be aggressive when it comes to food

2nd Hubert in the Alcove

3rd & 4th Holly & Mapie over by the buffet

5th Oaki by the bookcase

6th Willow in her crate near the couch

7th & 8th Emi and Boo in the Kitchen

Until the puppies Willow and Oaki came we use to give them bones and just keep an eye on them, they would occasionally swap but no fights. They always worked it out among themselves however since the puppies have come we have not done it the pack is still too unstable with the new arrivals.

Guest Clover

2 crated, one of those won't eat unless she is in her crate the other is a jerk and will wander off to counter surf instead. And the other 2 where ever I put their bowls down.
