Leaving My Puppy Home For 8 Hours

Hi Guys,

Recently my partner and I got a 10 week old Sarplaninac Puppy. We brought him home on the weekend as to adjust him to his new surroundings but now that it is time to go back to work for 8 hours a day. (9 - 5)

The first day we left him at home by himself in the backyard/garage (fully enclosed backyard with high fences and a 2 car garage that has a door that leads into the backyard) He has plenty of fresh water (2 buckets) some puppy biscuits & a bed & chew toys.

I chose to come home half way through the day and continue to work from home, he seemed pretty chilled & I chose to leave him outside until 5:30 as this would be the time I would get home.

Is 10 weeks old to young to be leaving him unattended for to long?

Thanks

I personally think that he is too young to be left at home by himself for eight hours a day.

I do not sell my babies to anyone who does not have someone in the home most of the time, they need to be fed on a regular basis during the day,

could injure themselves if left to be able to access the back yard, with hot weather could suffer from heat stress, these are just some of the things that babies have to be monitored for.

I had to leave my pup home alone when I returned to work. (I wouldn't have been able to afford her if I didn't work full-time!).

I had her in a six foot high pen which ran down one side of the house and then around under the verandah for weather protection. I didn't feel safe having a huge backyard for a tiny puppy to have access to for months.

She had a covered crate to sleep in if she wanted and I made sure to have plenty of things for her to do like a low tray full of sand for digging or lying in, a clamshell full of balls, a ramp to a small box to run up and down, cardboard boxes to rip up or play in, a kids tunnel to run through with material flapping off it, frozen kongs to eke out her food etc. Lots of stuff to keep her amused and hopefully make her think. I only had low containers for water though, a bucket is an accident just waiting to happen. I did have a few weeks home with her first for training and getting her used to alone time though.

Personally if I was home for any reason I would be taking the opportunity for some type of training or socialisation in between time alone. Its such a small window when they're babies I wouldn't lose a moment of precious time. (Im not sure I'd get much work done lol)

it sounds secure enough - just make sure he has some shallower water containers NOT metal - they get way too hot :) ..I always worry about pups going head first into a bucket :( IMO he will be fine .

Hi,

Thanks for that.

Yeah we are going to get him a little paddle pool for the days it gets out of control with the heat.

When I continued to leave him outside when i got home he just slept. He has a massive 2 Car Garage for shade where we put his Bed, Food & Toys and a door opened so he can go out into the backyard, the yard is secured with High fences - his breed is also typically independent used working flocks of sheep alone without the supervision of it's human caregivers.

He's also not a small dog - he is the same size as friends 8 month old husky.

Hi,

Thanks for all that information!

He is a very calm puppy (for the most part) It is very hard not to play with him all the time!

I mean, I had a Border Collie from the age of 7 till 19 until he passed away from natural causes. He was akin to the same breed that our little guy is now. He lived his entire life outside from 8 weeks when we brought him home and he was the best most well behaved, adjusted dog.

We leave the back door open for him when we are home so he can go outside to do his business and he seems to be relatively happy when he's outside - its more so when hes in the bedroom with us for 8 hours that he gets restless.

Hi,

I think you have all bases covered. I would just suggest you make very sure the garage door can not be blown shut possibly locking him outside.

Yeah, we have made sure that the door doesn't close.

Thanks, was a bit worried but he now seems ok with being outside there. When we are home he spends all of his time with us. This morning was much easier.

Gorgeous.

(I see a collar on puppy in the pic and hopefully you already know this, but I'd not be leaving a collar on the pup when he's alone, so many accidents waiting to happen, sadly a few members on this forum have lost dogs to strangulation with collars :()

Hi,

Thanks!

No We only put it on him when we are home for leash training.

That one I thought of immediately as the collar is just a bit to big at the moment.

He's gorgeous! I think he's going to look forward to our winter months more than our summer ones!

Thank you!

Yeah, we are going to get him a little dog pool this weekend for when we are home and he can cool off. Once he has all of his shots we'll start taking him to the beach.
