Just wondering what the best way to tell the newborn puppies appart.
Most people say nailpolish, but i have seen a lot of coloured bands around dogs necks. Just wondering what you would use for that and how well they work.

Any ideas i'd love to hear them. :)

I've always used coloured braids - buy roills in a dozen colours but remember to check them regularly - don't want them too tight about the neck nor too loose....

It's the thin piping material you sew on hems and sleeves etc. Go to the attached site and go down to "rickrack" - it's available in many dept stores or haberdashers etc.

I've always put different coloured collars around their necks. I used to use strands of wool and plait them into little collars, but Pup's mum's idea of using braids sounds a lot easier, I think I'll use them for my next litter.

Loobyloo, you can buy ric rack at spotlight, lincraft or bargain box and most other fabric stores

I use the elastic hair ties, but it does depend on the size of the pup. When they get to about 3 to 4 weeks I change to puppy or cat collars.

To those of you that use the ric rac do you just tie it to the correct size or sew it?

:) I've used the non-toxic version of white out, with spots dotted on the back of the neck / top of the head! my last litter were 'one dot', 'two dots', 'three dots' ect.....until they got their names!

I used non-toxic texta markers just above their tail in various colours until i could tell them apart at around 2 1/2 weeks.

I tie the ricrac/briads but replace often as the colours fade and it becomes the incorrect size as pups grow.....always cut it off.

I remember someone posting that they used coloured paper neck tags, similar to the ones they put on hospital patients wrists.

Anyone seen them???

Hi loobyloo,

I just use regular non-toxic texta, so need to reapply every 2 or 3 days, but as i said, you'll soon know who is who anyway!

Cheers,
Jen
