If it's just a focus issue it could be that hubby didn't give it enough time to focus and or he allowed it to focus on something other than the subject. wagsalot, can you post some pics so we can have a look see?

Ditto on avoiding the green box. Saying that, they shouldn't be that bad on that setting. Try your hubby on P instead, there at least you can override some of the settings.
