  1. Hi Simple, we have 3 mini smooth dachshunds. Is there anything in particular you'd like to know? do you know what type you're after (mini or standard and coat type)? if you let me know where you're located I might be able to pm you some breeder recommendations :-)
  2. The brand is Animalistic. We ordered online. It's much more solid than the ones bunnings stocks and the company were really good to deal with :-)
  3. We finally bought a dog door. One of those ones that fits in the tracks of the sliding glass door, since we rent. Have put it off til now as my partner has always been home with them, but is heading off to her posting soon. Cost about $300. Oh and we've found someone to be their nanny most week days, for a few hours per day. Spoilt babies they are.
  4. She is also fantastic with working through any individual problems you might be having and the class sizes are generally very small (4-6 dogs)
  5. We took our latest to All Round Good Hounds (they're on facebook) at Belco Pets. I knew the trainer, Eleni, through my mum who does foster stuff with ARF. She is hugely knowledgeable and the classes are *very* controlled in terms of any interactions the puppies have. I will say I found the lessons a little wordy for someone like me who already knows a bit about dogs, but that might not bother you :-)
  6. Thanks for the replies everyone :) I think for now I will keep on as I am with my older girls. Puppy arrived a few days ago and is (weirdly for a dachshund) not overly foody, but I think part of this has to do with just settling in to a new environment. I did offer him a taste of the puppy Barf the other day but he wasn't keen at all, so for now we are transitioning him from the My Dog wet & Supercoat dry to Holistic Select puppy dry & wet (with some puppy milk mixed in), he seems to like this.
  7. Uhm, then why are you feeding dry food in such small quantities at all? To provide texture and crunch? I'd just do what your dogs do best on. Well at this stage yes just texture and crunch I guess...and for things like Kongs or biscuit balls. We used to feed a bit more dry but then they started to get a little rotund (as dachshunds easily do!) so we reduced the amount of dry.
  8. Hi, I would like to know peoples' opinion of feeding raw and kibble (dry food) at the same time. We currently feed our two girls (miniature dachshunds) Big Dog BARF mixed with a bit of Holistic Select grain-free dry. Usually the dry is just a sprinkle over the raw, much less than a quarter of a cup. They also get a small chicken neck most days, either in the morning or at night w/ the raw instead of the dry. We also give them biscuit balls with the dry in during the day or sprinkle dry around garden while we are out (not every day, and we will adjust evening meal if they've had dry during the day). I was reading yesterday however that some people believe this is a no-no due to digestive rates & bacteria build up when the raw has to digest more slowly due to the dry. What are peoples' thoughts/experiences? Both our girls are happy & healthy, although we have noticed the older one (nearly 5) has slowed down in terms of energy over the past year or so...but this may be because the younger more energetic dog (just over a year old) makes her seem a little slow, not sure. I'm also asking because we are getting a new boy (also mini dachshund) in a week or so. I would love to feed him the Big Dog puppy BARF & was planning to mix in a bit of softened dry (same as above but the puppy formula), but now I'm a bit unsure (of course, I will transition him slowly regardless). The breeder has him on My Dog puppy wet & Supercoat dry atm. He will (all things going to plan) be a show dog, so it is important that he grows & develops correctly. Thanks in advance & sorry for the long post!
  9. Hi there, I will be getting my first show puppy (a male smooth black & tan mini dachshund) in about six weeks and was wondering if anyone could recommend some resources for a first time shower? I already have two dachies and so am well versed in general puppy rearing, but am interested in reading something more show-oriented, in particular something discussing what might need to be done differently in raising a show dog vs a pet dog. I've had a bit of a look on amazon, book depository, Dogwise etc but there's a lot out there and much of it concerning showing in the States or the UK (although I don't know if that really matters), so some recommendations would be much appreciated. I have attended some & will keep attending local shows in the lead up to getting the puppy, and once he arrives I will have the help of family/friends/ a breeder who have all shown. I also intend to attend handler's classes too, once he is old enough. Just keen to read/watch some theory for preparation in the meantime. Any other general tips or advice is also very welcome, if you feel like sharing. Thanks in advance! -- Jess
