  1. Where did you read this? I can't find it in any of the articles online
  2. The dog belonged to the grandson of the victim. I hope the woman recovers, it must have been terrifying for all involved :/ The article actually states that the dog was described (presumably by the victim only as the owner ran away with his dog afterwards) as a Rottweiler or Pit Bull. With two very different breeds having been described I find it incredibly hard to understand how any self respecting editor can run with the headline "Man’s hand ripped apart by pit bull ... " and a photo caption that reads "It appears that the pit bull may have first attacked the injured mans dog and the injured man tried to help it".
  3. We make to order, anything's possible (within reason). Just email us :)
  4. My credit card stopped talking to me a long time ago
  5. Thanks for the plug Staffyluv! How's that justifying going for you?
  6. The impounding council's animal management officer (Ku-Ring-Gai) knew about Team Dog and referred the family to us. We have some really good connections with Pound/Council workers and they refer people to us. Now that we're getting a bit more coverage, we hope to build on that network going forward.
  7. There is no way to definitively show the genetic make up of any mixed breed dog. The DLG revoked Ruby's declaration this morning. Her change of ownership forms have been processed and a notice of intent served. She is now allowed to go home and they have 28 days to arrange a breed assessment.
  8. Me, Darren from Fetching Dogs and melzawelza.
  9. It's important not to focus on what breed she may or may not be. The fact is she's an innocent dog that's no threat to society who has spent three weeks in a council pound entirely because of the colour of her nose. Here's Mel's speech from tonight which sums it up so well: Team Dog started a campaign regarding a dog named Ruby after contact from Ruby’s owners Friday afternoon just gone. We met Ruby and her family Saturday morning and launched her campaign 9pm Sunday night. Her petition has already gathered almost 6 thousand signatures. The huge response to this campaign highlights the community’s expectation for fair and successful animal management programs. Endless studies around the world have shown that banning or restricting breeds or types of dog is completely unsuccessful in reducing dog attack rates or severity, and in fact often causes them to rise. Ruby’s case is a perfect example of why. This legislation is both over and under inclusive. Significant amounts of precious Council Ranger resources and wages are spent targeting dogs that would never have caused a problem, leaving significantly less resources for dealing with dogs of other appearances that actually are displaying nuisance or aggressive behaviour in the community. We do have BSL in place here in NSW and while it is here Councils must work within the legislative framework provided to them. Team Dog has never and will never ask any Council to act in contradiction of the Companion Animals Act or the guidelines. We do, however, strongly advocate that Councils must use every legal option available to them to ensure that good dogs owned by good people are kept with their owners, regardless of their breed or appearance. We could argue that the community also holds this expectation judging by the incredible response to our campaign. This is why we call upon the Hills Shire Council to utilise their ability to revoke the declaration on Ruby under section 10.9 of the guidelines on the functions of the Companion Animals Act. There is precedent already set for this by Blacktown Council only in December last year. Section 10.9 states that after revocation the dog MUST be then re-issued with a notice of intention, to allow it to be breed and temperament assessed, as she should have been back in 2011. Ruby’s family, the Council, the vet that are holding her and Team Dog all believe strongly that Ruby will pass any temperament test administered. There is no requirement for the microchipped owner to submit a request for the revocation, or any evidence as to the dog’s breed. This action is only in relation to section 10.8, which covers a dog that may have been incorrectly microchipped as a restricted breed, but has not been through the Notice of Intention process that Ruby has. Ruby was declared as a Cross-breed, meaning she would not be a restricted dog if she passed a temperament test. Team Dog would like to respectfully and sincerely urge the Hills Shire Council to exercise their ability to revoke Ruby’s declaration, to allow her, and her beautiful family, a second chance. Her, and their, fate lies in your hands.
  10. WE WON!!! The declaration will be revoked in the morning and she'll be allowed to be assessed (not sure yet if breed and temp or just temp). She's not out of the woods yet, but we've got her over the first hurdle. Update on Team Dog's page. Huge thanks to everyone that signed and shared. You rock!
  11. Ku-Ring-Gai Council are happy to hold Ruby until all options have been exhausted.
  12. Ruby's story has this morning made front page of the Hills Shire Times website - a fantastic article put together by Senior Editor Bev Jordan. Thank you Bev for your compassionate and balanced reporting. See the article here: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/the-hills/ruby-the-dog-will-be-put-down-unless-the-hills-shire-council-allows-a-second-opinion/story-fngr8i1f-1226836575350 We are up to a staggering 5,530 signatures in a day and a half on the petition. What an incredible response from the community. We can't thank you enough for sharing Ruby's plight. We need a little more from you now, however. We need to see numbers at the Hills Shire Council meeting tonight. Ruby's family and Team Dog will be there, but we need you to come along as well, to show just how much we as a community care about families and their pets. 7:00pm TONIGHT 25th February 3 Columbia Court Baulkham Hills NSW 2153 It doesn't matter if you don't live in the Hills Shire - come along to listen to the proceedings and show in numbers how much we care. If you live in the Hills Shire or Ku-Ring-Gai Council areas PLEASE consider putting your name down to speak to the Councillors. This doesn't have to be long winded - you are only given three minutes maximum to speak. It can be as simple as one or two sentences letting the Councillors know that you support the revocation of Ruby. We can't stress enough that whether Ruby's declaration is revoked tonight relies almost completely on how many members of the community attend and how many are willing to speak and raise Ruby's plight with the Councillors. If you think you might like to speak, but aren't sure what to say, send us a message and we can help you out. We cannot stress enough how important it is that anyone that attends stays calm and polite at all times. It is easy to become frustrated in situations like Ruby's but expressing this frustration could jeopardise her survival. Don't speak up unless you've signed up to the list and been invited to speak. We look forward to seeing you there tonight. Time to really, really #RallyForRuby Continue to share the Petition: http://bit.ly/HelpRuby And the video:
  13. On the 4th of February 2014, a much loved family dog named Ruby was impounded by Ku-Ring-Gai Council in Sydney, Australia, after escaping her property. She was found playing with the children at the local primary school. Upon impounding it was found that Ruby had been declared a Restricted Dog (a 'Pit Bull Terrier' cross) by the Hills Shire Council in Sydney in 2011, when she was owned by someone else. New South Wales legislation allows an owner to contest this declaration through a breed and/or temperament assessment however her previous owner had not carried this out when the Council notified him of their intention to declare her restricted, which meant that Ruby was automatically declared a 'Restricted Dog' without further assessment or any appeal. Under this same legislation, a Restricted Dog cannot be rehomed. When Ruby's owners took her on they had no idea of this declaration and are now devastated as she is not legally allowed to be released to them. She has currently been impounded for over two weeks. The Hills Shire Council can rectify this and give Ruby a second chance. Under the New South Wales Guidelines, the declaring Council can revoke the Restricted Dog declaration on Ruby, to allow the process to be started again so she can be breed and temperament assessed, as she should have been back in 2011. Ruby's temperament is impeccable and both Ku-Ring-Gai Council and Ruby's owners are confident she will pass any temperament test administered. When requested to do this by both Ruby's owners and Ku-Ring-Gai Council, the Hills Shire Council took two weeks to respond and then informed the owners that the answer was no - essentially signing Ruby's death warrant, as her previous owner is unable to reclaim her. There is no reason for the Hills Shire Council to deny this request. Ruby has never been involved in any aggressive incidents, and she was never afforded a breed or temperament test as she deserved when they first declared her Restricted. She has a loving and responsible family willing to do anything they need to to bring her home, and Ku-Ring-gai Council are more than happy to have her residing within their council area after she has been breed and temperament tested as per the legislation. Only two months ago, Blacktown Council in Sydney revoked a declaration on another dog in very similar circumstances - why won't the Hills Shire do the same? We as a community expect better from our Councils. We expect them to do everything possible to keep dogs that have caused no harm with their loving families. We understand that they are working within faulty legislation that includes breed-specific restrictions, and that sometimes they have absolutely no choice or wiggle room when it comes to the outcomes of individual dogs and families. This is NOT the case with Ruby - the Hills Shire Council can afford her a chance while working within all provisions of the NSW Companion Animals Act - and yet they have refused to do so. Signing this petition will enable us to send an email to the Hills Shire Council Mayor and Councillors on your behalf, requesting that they do the right thing for Ruby and her loving family, and revoke the declaration. She, and they, should not be punished for her previous owner's inaction, and she deserves her right of appeal. For those who live within Hills Shire Council, or if you know somebody who does, please email your local Councillor separately and let them know as a voter in the area you expect for them to revoke Ruby's declaration. The contact info for Councillors is here: http://www.thehills.nsw.gov.au/Councillors.html#.Uwm26vSSydP While we are fighting for Ruby to be given a chance at life, the impounding costs to her family are rising. Please consider contributing towards the cause. The community's support in cases like this ensure that we can provide families with the best resources and work towards a positive outcome for them and the community as a whole. Account Name: Team Dog Account Number: 10219543 BSB: 062654 Together, we can see Ruby home with her loving family. Watch the video: Sign the petition: http://bit.ly/HelpRuby
  14. Wow, that's a lot of messages that Dave got!!
  15. <3 Happy Valentine's Day from Angel, Chopper, Trixie and Bruno! <3
  16. I don't do anything special. Probably not what you wanted to hear! Here are my LR export settings for portrait FB pics if it helps. I don't sharpen in PS before this step. If uploading to an album I check the high-res tick box on the bottom left of the upload screen.
  17. Who knows Erny. I think we're all trying to find that thing that will finally strike a chord across the board. It certainly wouldn't do any harm. People are lazy and apathetic though. You can give them a form letter and email addresses and it's still all too hard.
  18. This would be great, but TV ads cost several thousands. Team Dog doesn't have any rich sponsors or benefactors :/
  19. The creator of The Calgary Model, Bill Bruce, came to Australia and had extensive meetings with politicians statewide. It doesn't seem to have had an impact yet though. Very disappointing. Politicians will only care when they feel that votes depend on it. ETA: Team Dog co-organised Bill's Sydney talks.
  20. Team Dog aren't defined by the comments posted by some followers of the page. It is closely monitored and comments that are deemed offensive or unhelpful to the cause are deleted. Assuming of course, that they get over the hurdle of being a "breed" at all. That's not an inconsiderable hurdle. In all of this, there is one irrefutable message that needs to be pushed, and pushed hard on anyone with influence on this issue that will listen or that gives a damn. Breed Specific Legislation Does Not Work There's no emotion, no agenda, no amount of statistics or argument that can change that fact and that's what needs to be sold. Forget everything else, forget about your breed or anyone elses breed. It really is that simple. Any proposals for breed bans should be supported by statistics that cannot be found to support them. That's what we need to push. But more than that, it DOES affect everyone for the reasons already stated by Mel. Why do some people find that concept so hard to grasp
  21. Anyone interested in getting involved and trying to be proactive can join the Team Dog page on Facebook. We're putting together a campaign and people power will be needed.
  22. I agree, she does a hell of a lot for dogs and owners. In both her personal and professional time. The world needs more people like her.
  23. I read that different parts of the antler are harder than others too. Seems the smooth ones are softer than the bumpy ones.
