  1. Would love to come if something gets organised? I don't live there at the moment but its not too far away for me and I'd love to meet all the CC dolers. Maybe we should send out pms to everyone?
  2. I'm prepared to bet that woman has never owned a great dane.
  3. All for education..but if people have it in their heads to breed then they're not going to desex. If you cannot afford to have a dog desexed then you shouldn't own a dog. In the scheme of things desexing isn't a huge expense. So you are telling me that a 70 year old lady that can not afford to desex her dog that she has because there is no one else around can not own a dog because she can not afford to desex because she is on a pension? Desexing is a huge expense in the year 2010, over $200 for the average dog/bitch. That is someone's shopping for the week, rent, petrol, bills.... My house payments have gone up by $500 a month in 5 months. Now explain to me why someone that can not afford to desex their animal shouldn't own a dog? Because it is irresponsible to own a dog if you can't afford the costs involved.
  4. Slighty off topic but I've seen a lady a couple of times over the last few weeks with a guide dog in training, once at the local shopping centre where she was teaching him to use the escalator, and another time crossing the road at traffic lights. Both times she was trying to get the dog to go when it shouldn't (trying to go down the 'up' escalator and cross the road when the pedestrian light was red) and both times this dog did the right thing, didn't move at the intersection until he light was green and directed her to the right side of the escalator. He was only a little guy and I was amazed at how good he was already, it was very cute
  5. I'd be putting a lock on the gate. If it is the landlord and they complain about it, remind them that they have no right to enter the property without reasonable notice or while you are not there.
  6. I think you should speak to breeders and owners of working breeds with reasonable drives and spend time with their dogs to ensure that your positivity becomes a certainty. No agility BC I know would be satisified with a half hour on lead walk a day. Now I am new to the whole breeders thing but would there be some breeders out there that would spend some time with me meeting there dogs even if I was not 100% on the breed or one of there litters? Go to shows and talk to breeders. This has two benefits, one being that you can learn about different breeds that interest you from someone who really knows what they're talking about, and also you are making contacts for when you are actually looking for a breeder
  7. I'll give you my advice on these two, since I don't know much about the others. Huskies are not a breed I ever would have chosen for myself. They are gorgeous dogs but the shedding is insane. They drop coat by the handful and it gets everywhere. Diet is important, they put on weight easily so you need to be careful. And I have no doubt that they would just eat all day if you let them. They don't really bark much but they are very vocal. OH loves it, I find it incredibly irritating and would rather listen to constant barking I guess its a matter of opinion. They are diggers. They have a high prey drive. We've had to go out and rescue possums that are stuck in trees etc because the huskies will just stand there and wait for it to come down (we have nine here so they take turns to watch ) so they either have to stay up there until they starve or they come down and get eaten. I'm not sure how much of an issue this would be if you only had one though. Border Collies are a fantastic breed (not that I'm biased or anything :D). They have a lot of energy and they can be destructive if they don't get enough stimulation (both physical and mental). They are very intelligent which can be both a pro and a con You can't spoil them, I've learnt that the hard way But they are not really as full on as you might think. Darcy gets most of his stimulation from chasing the huskies around the yard. I don't think they really play with him much but he keeps himself amused running circles around them he loves his ball so I go out and play fetch with him whenever I get a chance. When we lived with my parents he used to get a couple of games of fetch every day plus a walk or run. Now, its more like one game of fetch and the rest of the time he just entertains himself :D He doesn't seem to be suffering too much. He's usually pretty happy just chilling inside with his mummy. When he was an only dog I used to spend a lot more time exercising and training him because he seemed to need it more then. Really, if you are prepared to put in an hour daily for exercise that would be plenty, as long as the pup is getting mental stimulation as well, thats the harderst part. Darcy loves his Kong but he has figured out how to clean it out in about 5 minutes :D Darcy's biggest problem is he barks at everything. Bird flys over the yard, he barks. He hears a noise next door, he barks. Someone gets home, he barks. He wants you to throw his ball, he barks Lucky I love him.
  8. Wow, this thread is growing so quickly, I only checked it earlier today and had 7 pages to catch up on. Its amazing to see so much support for someone who most of us have never met. I was hoping Magnus would be found by now But good news that Jed is hanging in there
  9. I think we need a new forum for people who have more than 7000 posts...you know, just so I have something to aim for
  10. Does anyone know of an obedience training club in or near Richmond? The closest one I have been able to find is over a half hour drive away so if there is one closer that would be easier. I am interested in competition obedience. Any suggestions would be appreciated
  11. Did they provide you with an itemised bill? If they didn't, request one. Then just take out the costs of the food, toys etc and contribute only to the things that relate to his eye problem. It might be just my suspicious nature, but I tend to think they may have gone and spent heaps on the toys etc thinking that they would make you pay half. If that's the case, they are very rude. Actually, it was quite rude for them to give you a bill that included all those other things and expect you to cough up.
  12. I can only remember having one meltdown moment with Darcy. He got out of the yard through a small gap in the fence that I hadn't noticed. He then proceeded to run down the street, happily bouncing around wagging his tail, waiting for me to get almost close enough to grab him and then running off again. Cheeky little brat. Lucky he went the opposite direction to the busy road we lived near but I thought I would never catch him and he certainly wasn't interested in coming back to me when I called him When I him home I burst into tears but I think it was more relief than anything I found out later that my stupid ex had been playing chase games with him after I had specifically told him not to Don't think he realise how serious I was until he got home and copped an earful...
  13. How could two blue dogs produce a black pup? Isn't the dilute recessive dd? So if both parents are dd then all the pups would have to be dd. At least, that is how I understand it?
  14. Shouldn't the person who told the parents that be responsible, not the dog's owner who wasn't on the premises or in control of the dog at the time of the incident???. I would think the owner of the business is still responsible for what goes on there, even if they are not on the premises at the time. The person who said the dog was safe was an employee. I may be wrong but aren't employers/business owners responsible for their employees?
  15. If the parents were told not to worry about the dog, maybe they thought it was ok to just let them play. Lots of people don't realise how important it is to supervise dogs with kids. It might have been stupid but I still think that the hairdresser is more responsible for having the dog their in the first place. When you bring your dog to a place where you know there are going to be children, you have to be prepared to take responsibility.
  16. You were not "kicked in the guts" by anyone. Other people simply disagreed with you. Some even gave you detailed reasons why they disagreed with you. There's nothing wrong with that. Its called having a discussion.
  17. Um...I did read the whole thread. I was talking about seeing whether the discussion could occur without the dog. Huski - what about just picking Daisy up if you go past? I don't think that would work. Picking her up brings her closer to the head height of the lady so that might scare her even more.
  18. Darcy is 2 in just over a month and he still acts like a puppy But every now and then I see a glimpse of an adult dog... He is starting to test boundaries, especially now that he has so many other dogs around. In particular, he likes to pick fights with Phantom (who I think is 3 and still acts like a puppy )
  19. I know how you feel, my Darcy is almost 2 I'm sure he only just turned one
  20. It was a bit silly to have two litters with a dog that you don't even have papers for. If she hasn't given you the papers, doesn't that mean she is still technically the owner of the dog?
  21. :D Some people are just too stupid ;) :D ;) Speaking of stupid, the other day my BIL told me that Darcy is obviously not pure-bred because pure bred dogs don't have pigment on their lips (or something like that.) However, since Darcy is 'papered', he would be very interested in a bitch puppy with papers when (not if) I breed Darcy, because he would be able to cross it with one of his mutts and sell the puppies for thousands because they will have a pedigree...Um yeah sure.
  22. He hasn't let it slow him down. He still runs around as if nothing is wrong, he just does it with one foot up in the air He's been resting in his crate most of the day but he has a bit of a run when I let him out to pee.
  23. Well, we had another look this morning and noticed his foot was quite swollen. So we tried to have another look at it but he yelped when we touched it too much so off to the vets. She said its not a fracture because if that was the case it wouldn't have been such a gradual thing, he would have been badly limping straight away. Which was a bit of a relief because that's what we thought it was. She also said it felt like an infection which could have been from the cut further up on the leg. It could also be from a small cut he had on one of his pads a week or so ago that healed up already. So he's now on some stronger antibiotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatories. If he doesn't start to clear up by Friday I have to take him back. So fingers crossed that the antibiotics fix him up.
  24. Then you would have a massive increase in BYBs who don't get vet care for their pregnant bitch, and don't vet-check or vaccinate their puppies. At least now, BYBs can take their puppies in for vaccinations. Better than having pups being sold without.
