I have one of these too. Our female malamute eats first and asks questions later. You can even give her a tablet like it's a treat and it's gone before she's realised what it is she's eaten. She also eats super fast and hardly chews her food at all. Our male malamute on the other hand is much more discerning. If you offer him food he will sniff it first and if he's not keen shake his head and turn away. He also eats his meals much slower and takes things out of his bowl and will give it all a bit of a lick before actually eating it.

I have two Alaskan Malamutes and often get asked how they cope with the heat in summer and whether I shave them. Most people are fairly receptive when I explain they don't need to be shaved due to their coats insulating them against the heat as well as the cold.

I"ve had two of the leather leads for at least 7 or 8 years and they are still going strong. I don't do anything specific to look after them either.

He may have laughed as he wanted to keep the conversation light hearted and indicate that even though his dogs don't like strangers he himself is not an unfriendly guy. I have told people to please get/hold their off leash dogs as my dog does not like strange dogs, they ignore me and let their dog get in my dogs face and then start abusing me for having an aggressive dog when he reacts. It gets tiring and it really sucks that you get treated like you are the worst owner on earth so again his laughing may be something he does to hide his awkwardness in an uncomfortable situation. Like someone else said the earphones are probably so people leave him alone and don't try to engage. I also nod, smile or say hi to people I walk past but that doesn't give them a free pass to touch my dogs.

Free range here too, though they don't have access to the whole house just the tiled kitchen/family room.

Each dog's critical distance is different.

Oh wow he really is like a real life 'My Little Pony'! He is one of the cutest things I've seen and I think thins has now become my favourite thread. :D

I also have a dog who will walk perfectly on leash but I will not let anyone approach him in public. He is very well trained and attended obedience for a good couple of years so was socialised during his formative years but since he developed arthritis he does not like strangers getting too close or touching him.
