  1. I'd love to have made a profit or even come close to breaking even, bred my first litter and the below is just the basic bigger expenses so far just relating to this breeding and not the thousands I've spent trialling and health testing my bitch to prove she should be bred and they are only 2 weeks old.

Collection and shipment of semen $500

Several prog tests and AI $500

Emergency c-section on a public holiday after hours $2300

    Stud fee $2500

My girl had 2 pups, both boys.

I wanted a girl to continue the line but I am going to be poor anyway so keeping a pup regardless.

Toller pups are around $2500, so I have one pup to cover all my expenses ????

Safe to say I am running at a loss and I will happily slap the next person who asks me how much money I am making!

  2. She looked adorable and that's the main thing, I've never seen either whippets or iggies really stretch out, so it was awesome to see them all :D

thanks, I can only agree with you there.

Isn't it a buzz to see your own dogs in full flight like that, and yes the sighthounds are pretty awe inspiring. I never tire of watching them run. I could watch them all day.

I couldn't help but laugh at my little girl, she was very proud to have "caught" the lure and was bringing it all the way back to me minus it being attached to the rope lol

I reckon I could watch them all day as well, I would love to have seen a Saluki there or an Afghan would have been pretty awesome as well.

  3. Yes at the dog park after a ball. I think my dog has border collie in her mix. I can't recall seeing a whippet doing flyball and some of those dogs are fast over a short distance.

    eta probably around thirty metres

Whippets and whippet mixes are some of the most popular flyball breeds :) Do a youtube search for whippet flyball and you'll see thousands of great videos!

    Okay I stand corrected. I don't do flyball. :)

In Australia they aren't popular, so it's a safe assumption to make but overseas they are bred for flyball and quite rightly are the fastest dogs running and sometimes are mixed with Borders as well :)

  4. Not sure if anyone has mentioned a Brittany or a German Pinscher.

Or a Toller or Sussex spaniel; Many breeds would suit you;keep in mind temperament can vary in any litter and a breeder will be able to advise which pup would best suit your situation. Also look forward to hearing about what breed you choose...Best wishes to you.

As much as I love my Tollers, I wouldn't recommend them as a breed for as a first time dog owner with 4 young children.

They can be pretty full on pups and if you wouldn't consider a Border Collie in this situation I wouldn't look at a Toller. They are very similar in exercise levels, intelligence and coat care.

While some may fit perfectly, I would say it's an individual dog thing rather than a breed thing and I personally as a breeder wouldn't do it :)

  5. Does anyone here have an excess dog permit with the South Gippsland Shire?

If so can you please tell me was it hard to get and what the process was? I know it varies between each shire, so hoping someone has had personal experience otherwise I will just have to wait to call them on Tuesday :)

  6. Mine are pretty vocal as well.

Two of them erupt into these long mournful creepy howls occasionally which pretty of putting when you aren't expecting it in the middle of the night but it is the only time I've ever heard them howl :)

They do it more after a big exciting day as well lol

  7. I love seeing old dogs out and about (when they aren't in obvious pain of course)

I take my 12 year old on walks by himself as he can't go as far as the other two and he adores it, prances along having a wonderful time sniffing.

Only now though is he really starting to look old, going a bit grey in the face, still hears and sees well but is looking his age now.....though he never ever acts it!

  8. Male first is the way to go. I ended up with two males that I titled in showing and flyball, with a National title to boot with the latter sport and still I was turned down for a bitch by one breeder because I had an entire male (that I showed) at home lol

After 8 years of starting in the breed I finally got my main registered bitch and so glad I was made to wait!

  9. I go to Frankston with my guys, but I haven't done any of the obedience there for awhile. From what I remember I just did my own thing anyway when I rocked up while waiting for my girl to get old enough to do flyball.

I really only go for the flyball and occasionally agility but if you have any questions I can try and answer them for you :)

  10. Kenzie got her first pass in CCD on Saturday!!!! It has been so long and painful trying to get to this, we have the dreaded border collie "drop during the sit stay"!!! But on Saturday she managed the sit stay!!! And then to top it off she placed first and we brought home a lovely ribbon and trophey! Of course on Sunday the dreaded "drop during sit stay" returned (5 seconds in to it!!). But that doesn't matter I know she can do it!!! Only 2 more passes now! I've promised her if she can get CCD we never have to do obedience again and she can just focus on all the other things she loves!!

    post-34437-0-78686000-1415013186_thumb.jpg

    Whoo hoo! Congrats :D

I hate the stays as well but not because she can't do them, it's actually the one thing I can trust she will do but it's the other dogs I don't trust and she isn't the type of dog that would take too kindly to others standing over her :/

  11. However like most Tollers she hates repetitions and is very aware of me and my feelings whereas it looks like most BCs couldn't give a s**t what their owners are feeling lol

    W

Completely not true. All my borders have been very sensitive to how I feel. Which is why I have stopped competing as it freaks me out too much and upsets the dogs. No way could I even go out and train them if I was in a bad mood. If I am in the house and upset and they are outside, they know and will start scratching at the dog and whining. Can not hide anything from them!

    Yes....this...times 2

 Knew some people would comment on that hence why I said most and there are exceptions to every rule but I know a tonne of Borders from flyball and agility and that's what I see.

And how do you know that those dogs aren't the exception to the rule?

There are a bunch of borders in Vic that are very competitive in flyball and agility but I would not call them typical of the breed.

Yes, maybe they are the exception but if the OP is looking at BCs to compete with in agility maybe it's something they need to be aware of?

Of course maybe it's the dogs getting frustrated with the way they are being handled and over the course of months/years have learnt to give the handler the finger and do what they want? :)

Would people have been less offended if instead of feelings I should have said doing?

Like I said it's just something I've noticed in the 10 years I've been competing and watching all the Borders that dominate both sports :)

  13. I agree with those that say get a breed you can live with first.

I am constantly told to get a BC and being surrounded by so many I love doing flyball and agility it is hard and sometimes I think about heading to the "dark side" but for now Tollers have me.

You've probably seen my little girl around, I adore her, she is quick as a flash and incredibly intelligent. However like most Tollers she hates repetitions and is very aware of me and my feelings whereas it looks like most BCs couldn't give a s**t what their owners are feeling lol

We are working on that but if she ran as fast at agility as she does in flyball she would easily push the top BCs on speed. Flyball is where she currently excels as she is super competitive and is a drivey girl but agility doesn't hold the same competition aspect for her.

However she is bit of a freak of nature, and there are alot of Tollers out there that are just too soft and it seems to be harder to get one that can be as competitive as the Borders which is a shame as they do very well overseas.

    Jovi

Ch. Sherbrooke Living On A Prayer ADX JDX GD RA FM

Jovi has one goal this year, to have a safe uncomplicated pregnancy and birth of at least one girl puppy thank you :p

I will probably end up accomplishing nothing in regards to the boys as, if all going according to plan Jovi will take up alot of time and money from March onwards  Spoilt little bitch :p

    ----------

Well puppies didn't happen for us unfortunately, so that's next years goal :)

So Darcy and Jovi will be going for their flyball master excellent FMX title and I am going to hopefully get Masters titles in agility on Jovi. May have another go at rally if there is time, pretty busy few months coming up with agility and flyball!

    That's pretty much it :)

  15. I have three at the moment and plan on adding a fourth next year which would be my max.

Ideally I would love only 2 but I do want to breed occasionally (which is where the fourth is coming from) and I find competing with one dog a bit boring so that's difficult

As I also do dog sports I like to have a bit of an age gap, my main trialling dog is 4 and will be 5 when I get my pup which is a good gap. My other two are 10 and 12 so they are all but retired.
