  1. I still tend to crate Demi when I leave the house- partly because I dont think I would like to come back to the disaster zone (not that she has done TOO much damage c/w my Kelpies) but also because I dont want her doing zoomies with the Kelpies while she is still so much smaller than them. There is a bit of sooking about being seperated (she was just in her play pen to begin with however fences do not stop this little fluffy bum) which is why I had to crate her instead. It is an XLarge so she has plenty of space. Mind you I have to lock all the doors top and bottom (normally only shut the top one with a Kelpie) as she has worked out that she can push the bottom/top of door open enough to get out if both are not locked. At least thats what I THINK she is doing as I keep coming home to find her loose in the house LOL!! Is being an escape artist a Lappie trait- no one even mentioned it too me however Demi really is a houdini!!
  2. 1) introduce the pup to as many new things as possible- noise, people, other dogs (dont put the pup on the ground unless you know all the dogs have been vaccinated) so that it learns to be confident- it doenst necessarly have to play but just see/interact with them and know that they are not scary. 2) have a pen or crate so that you have somewhere safe to keep the pup (and also give yourself some time out if necessary) 3) make rules and follow them- if you dont want the pup to jump on you dont let it from day one, same with going on furnature I have to say I have failed on the last one- just too darn cute (but I dont mind jumping dogs!) PS now you have told us you are getting a pup pictures are required when you get it!!!!
  3. I believe that they are very trainable to stop said barking (if they werent so darn cute and thus are allowed to continue with all their bad habbits- but I wont admit to that!) but I think we just wanted to know that they do like the sound of their own voice!! Dont give up though- I am sure that with the time and effort that you put in that a Lappie would still work just wanted to let you know!! And I dont really find Lappie barking very annoying- but I do own four kelpies so I have learnt to turn off the noise so perhaps talk to people that dont have my amazing noise eliminating ability!! Personally the bark is not as loud, ear peircing and does not make water vibrate (all things that kelpies can do when the bark) and I think it is easier to train as they are not SO focused on getting any attention ie distraction would work whereas for a Kelpie (and I believe GSD) it would be seen as a reward to continue barking!
  4. I have to agree that while Demi is GENERALLY quiet for a pup get to dinner time and you really cant shut her up. And during play time she is quite happy to let the neighbourhood know what is going on. Although she is the quietest dog I have when I go out!!
  5. I agree- perhaps just a little later in the day (and I dont finish work till a little 1pm so perhaps I have an ulteria motive LOL!!) ETA- dont mind me it looks like I cant make it anyway *sigh*
  6. I like it!! She always looks soooo happy!
  7. Well my list after having Demi a whole 2 months so these are specific to her rather than ALL lappies Positives 1) VERY cute and fluffy and Unique 2) VERY with other dogs- she doesnt get in their face like most other pups 3) Keeps up with four Kelpies, also puts up with four Kelpies!! 4) Is minded by my grandparents so moves between three houses and adjusted straight into all the moving around 5) she was really easliy toilet trained 6) really easy to confiscate things off (demi stops and lets you take things ie car keys off her whereas a Kelpie would take off and make it a chasing game) 7) EVERYONE loves her!!!! 8) very easy to find minders while you work your other dog because.. See No7. Negatives 1) Bower bird tendancies- I found my mobile in her crate last night along with shoes (she cant get them all in so there are a few outside her crate as well), toys, a rock nearly as big as her head (NO idea how she got it in there??), my watch, pair of socks, a fork and the remote control!!!!!!! 2) ALL the lappies that I have met have managed to get their tongue in my mouth- they seem to have a very pokey in/out lick rather than a drag up your face lick!!!! So darn cute but EEeeewwwww and they are so quick about it too!!!!!! 3)Puppy fluff - bring on the adult coat! Oh and I will include a number 4 for bad things- SOOOO cute an fluffy that you dont tell them off when they are being naughty Sorry it was impossible to keep the positives down to three!! Oh and 9) cute ways they sleep- she woke up as i took the pic!! 10) VERY photogenic!!!
  8. Waiting....Waiting.....Waiting..... No excuse now that your not studying!!!!
  9. We think my bitch is alergic to one of the ingredients that spreads spot on around the body or one of the alcohols as she can have frontline sprayed onto her but got sore throats after every spot on application. I use garlic, apple cider vinnegar and cinnamon in the dogs meals and then capstar whenever I see a flea. This seems to be working with washing of bedding and regular vacuming as I have not seen a flea in a few months- even when they are in contact with flea ridden dogs (Uncles dog)! The new product is COMFORTIS. A monthly version of Capstar. I would love to try in on my uncles dog so that my lot are not incontact with fleas every week!
  10. I have a friend who has a Working Kelpie, a KelpiexAmstaf (we think) and a BCx in a large appartment that has a concrete backyard that you could probably just swing a small cat in. The dogs do flyball, agility and get walked/jogged 1-2 times per day, they dont get off lead much for zoomies coz they are a little accident prone unless at training and it is structured. You wouldnt even know she had dogs- never a sound, a clean house and some VERY VERY happy dogs. They get to be around people all the time and vegging out and they are not overly excited etc. So yep- so long as you give a dog enough mental stimulation and exercise I think any dog can live in any sized house!
  11. OK a more youthful picture- where I actually did get her ouchy gums Sony A200 f 8.0 ISO 200 1/125
  12. Sony A200 f 8.0 ISO 200 1/125 I was trying to get a picture of her ouchy gums- poor little girl is teething but got this instead. I was trying to edit it a little but everytime I got her markings looking richer I ended up with a red ear *sigh* perhaps some funky softwear as well as a new lens for christmas!! I am trying to work out if it would look better if i just cropped the ear out of the pic?
  13. YAY!! I actually understood what you meant. I agree about the lighting and I think that my be the main problem that I have at the moment *Sigh*. Ah well I will just use Niks dogs for the moment so I dont have to combat the "shine"....
  14. Ok thought I would put these two in?? Not sure though.. Crapy background (compost bin! but I really like the light??) perhaps I need to learn to edit? ETA another
  15. OK mish you have done a VERY VERY bad bad bad thing!! Since looking at all the pics on here- and realising that I have finally worked out how to use the camera- well enough that I am not a complete beginner. I have decided that I want to get a new lense to try and improve some more!! I have been using the Kit Lense and as a complete beginner I didnt realise how 'unsharp' the pictures were- and have started to suffer jealousness at others pics!! So I mainly take pics using the 18-70 kit lens BUT I do take pics of flyball and at dog shows and need to zoom in more for them and have been using the kit 75-300. I have been looking at reviews of all the lenses but still cant make up my mind!!! I was thinking of the Tamron 18-250 and just wanted to ask what you thought of it? I guess since Mish usually uses it it must be alright?? Or do I go for the Tamron 17-50 and look at getting another lens in a few months time for flyball etc???? Any other suggestions are welcome- as well as the cheepest place to buy a good lens!!
  16. Then I can practise on Jedi- not having a shiny dark coloured dog *sigh* or a puppy that runs toward the camera every time she sees it!! And we will blitz the the photo section with our AMAZING pics (well maybe your amazing pics)!! Bah study- I studied the dogs... perhaps not relevant to disease study but much much more interesting!!
  17. And another of Demi since she has already made an appearance!!
  18. Ok this will be my first attempt- I MAY have noticed Ashanali Sig and decieded to chuck in some pics (I should have been studying but it seemed much more fun!!) I think i will get out tomorrow and take some pics when the light is better!! Abby when she realised i took a pic!! Bluey and Demi Bluey (my only willing subject!)
  19. I use 'vets all natural' to put weight on one of my 'on the go' kelpies and with it I can actually turn him into a porka if i need to!! but if she is picky then perhaps not. By feeding lots of small meals you have an opportunity to feed a greater amount of food than what she would consume in one sitting. Oh and just straight puppy milk might be tempting enough for her?? BUT ultimatly if she has a nice coat and is bright and bubbly then at least you know she is healthy and happy!! ETA: I have also been adding LIVAMOL to my dogs diet which is a 'cool' additive and I have been happy with the results (where as Vets all natural is a 'hot' supplement)
  20. Link to members of the Australian Veterinary Dental Society. I would expect the vets here to be up to date with what is going on in animal dentistry- even if they do not specialise. http://www.petdental.com.au/avds_members.htm
  21. As someone who named an orphaned bat "ding" and another "man" I think fluffy is a GREAT name- Mind you Safire also prefers to be called "princess" out in public (as in that is what she recalls to!!)- that one I am ashamed of!!
  22. I loved the freebies as well. The flyball was the best (of course...) and I am glad that there were no big dramas with any of the dogs- and most are coping so well with the cameras, lights and everything!! One of the guys taking pics of the dogs said that he would work with animals ANY day after his experience with the dogs!!
  23. I cant wait until it is all set up- I sooo want to see if one of my boys will do it!!
