  1. Probably not ideal but at least the dogs are being exercised. I dunno but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.
  2. ?? So only have middle to high income offspring? I don't think that's what she's saying at all. We're middle class now, but I used to be a single-parent student on a pension when I had my last 2 cats. Money was TIGHT, but I had my priorities straight. I knew that having pets could mean unexpected vet bills, and made sure I had plans in place for if that happened. Before I was able to do that I didn't consider having pets. I have been in a situation where I had to relenquish my dog to the pound, which was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but I was going through a divorce with an 8 month old baby in tow and had to beg and borrow to get plane tickets to get out of a situation where we were living on $100 a month - there was no way I could have forseen that when we adopted him (we found him on the road, actually..when he was a pup). I know sometimes things become out of our control. But not 6 months after deciding to adopt a dog. And not when your situation hasn't changed (hers hasn't). And not when your pet has definitely eaten something and needs ONE surgery. We're not talking mysterious illnesses here. You said in your op that she is only an acquaintance so how do you know exactly what her situation is? Personally I don't really see any difference between what she has done and what you did surrendering your dog. Just because you think you had exceptional circumstances doesn't mean that she doesn't think the same thing about her current situation. Have you ever considered your dog may have been put down too rather than rehomed because statistically that was probably the outcome. The point is it is possible that the decision to have this done was no easier for her than it was for you and that she may have also felt that there was no other option for her. I agree that it is sad the dog was put down but none of us know what is around the corner.
  3. Are you going to send a reply email giving her reasons why people shouldn't buy BYB pups (and why pups shouldn't be sold at 6 weeks of age)?
  4. So were they registered or not? If they were I would contest that part. The other part I think you will probably have to cop. Geez I am glad I don't live in your council area. Only cost me $30 when my oh left our side gate once.
  5. Very bad manners. If someone's dog marked me he would expect a swift kick up the backside if I was quick enough and at the very least a very nasty telling off. Girls do mark, but not generally on people. My bc girl cocks her leg prolifically on walks, a lady she aint..
  6. Just so you know, dogs shouldn't eat grapes. They are toxic in large amounts, and probably fine if they eat one or two, but I wouldn't be encouraging a love of something that if they got into without your knowledge and eat too many could kill them.
  7. Well the poo won't make him sick, nasty yuck factor though...eww. I guess the only exception to this is if the baby is unwell with something like ecoli which is probably unlikely. The thing I would be a bit worried about though are those crystal things that swell with moisture that are inside the nappy. Did he rip it right apart or just kind of eat the crap off the outside?
  8. Licencing livestock etc is a ridiculous idea. Apart from anything else it could never be followed up, keeping track of who has and hasn't got the appropriate licensing would not be feasible. We own a 20 acre block and there are countless similar size holdings all over the place, not to mention individual cat, dog, bird owners - there is no way that any organisation could keep a record of who has, hasn't, needs, doesn't need an animal license. As it is, in our council area, there would be countless dogs not even registered. If the council cannot find all these how are they going to make all these owners sit down and do a little test on animal nutrition.
  9. A dog that merely chases - does and can kill stock! One and the same in my opinion. The aftermath of 'just chasing' can be just as deadly. Chasers don't get a second chance here. I agree, and I don't get why so many people find this concept so hard to understand. Both are as bad as each other - a dog which is just chasing can do as much damage. Stock being chased through fences and stressed to the point where they die anyway is no prettier than a dog that kills.
  10. When I say toss, I just mean don't feed it to the dogs. Obviously you wouldn't literally do that if you are going to try and get a refund.
  11. In answer to your question, I would toss the rest, not worth the money to feed mouldy food. Even if you can't see it its there. I agree contact the company.
  12. I think the window stickers work ok, just not for very long. I also cannot use a bug zapper. My bc has an absolute fear of them (along with balloons, balloons popping, thunder, basically anything that makes a loud bang or cracking sound etc etc bloody neurotic dog ). She even freaks out when the neighbours have their zapper turned on.
  13. I have read that Dachies who are very fit and active tend to have less back problems than their couchpotato counterparts. There is nothing that dachies love more than exploring, you just have to be wary of how good their recall is. Our b&t standard smoothie is actually quite good but there are limits to how far I will trust this. Never anywhere near a road. Our b&t standard smoothie is very aloof with strangers, as long as they don't pay her any attention she is fine but as soon as they talk to her or bend down to pat her she tends to start barking at them. I am led to believe that the long haired variety are nowhere near as standoffish as the standard smooths though. Noone can walk down our driveway at night (including my husband getting home late) without the whole household knowing about it - this is something I see as a good thing though as my oh is away for work a fair bit and would rather know is someone is lurking around the house. She never barks when somebody is just walking past on the street though. I love dachies, they are such great little dogs which make up for some of their less desirable characteristics in so many ways. Ours really is a (and I can only really speak for the standard smooths) one family dog but within the family they also seem to pick out a favourite. This loyalty only wavers when there is food available, then they are anybodies!
  14. Why would the dog be eating while its in the salon? Surely its not there 24 hours a day. I remember when my children were small, I would go without the haircut rather than drag them into a salon with me if my oh couldn't have them at the time.
  15. Sounds like little Justin - great name btw :D - is a bit of a handful. Our dachie is also a very strong willed girl who would definitely turn into a monster if she ever gained the upper hand. Good luck with the trainer. I would love to see pics of him. Is he a smooth or long coat, standard or mini? We have a black and tan standard (smooth). Great little dogs.
  16. I would consider getting the vet to test for hypothyroidism. Dry skin is one of the symptoms and greyhounds are susceptible.
  17. THANK YOU you seem to know what you are talking about his father is a very big boy his mother had a bit more legs on here so thank you You said you hadn't seen his father.
  18. He doesn't look pure staffy to me. I am thinking maybe boxer cross but you will probably never know. Beautiful puppy though.
  19. Nope, there would be no vaccination manufacturer (whether it be for animals or humans) in the world who would guarantee 100% effective cover. A small percentage won't gain immunity from vaccination no matter how closely protocol is followed. Virkon is very good stuff, kills lots of nasties.
  20. Just another thing to think about, some of the poorer quality dog foods available have a lot of fillers and so a lot can go through undigested and this can sometimes be part of the reason this behaviour starts. So maybe look at what you are feeding as well as trying the pineapple.
  21. Hmmm, like when someone writes on several occassions that their dog died from eating too many Schmackos, when in fact it had advanced liver cancer and a history of being overweight and no autopsy performed to prove whether the Schmackos may or may not have been a contributing factor...
  22. Sorry but there is no way I would be trusting the judgement of a 5mo near cars. If she is able to get to an area where there are 5 other cars parked she can run out and be run over.
  23. Looks sort of border collieish! ETA: He looks gorgeous!
  24. I have found that dogs only deters them if the dog is around all the time. If the dog is not there just once they seem to know. My dog is a great fox deterrent but a few years ago I had to shut her in for just one night and I lost chooks.
  25. Yes we are, there are lots of different mites and ear mites are not the same as dermadectic mange. Sarcoptic mange is also caused by another type of mite. And yes you are right, dermadectic mange is not contagious. Lots of other mites are though. Advocate treats them all. ETA: PS. sorry to alarm you!!
