  1. Killing by shelters/vets is not 'cruelty' in my book.
if the killing of over ( well over some say) 250.000 dogs and cats each year isnt cruelty, then what is?.

Leaving pets ( often desexed) on short chains, or in bare yards, with no food/training/warmth.... THAT is cruel.

Mixing up breeds ,producing pups with mismatched bodyparts /coats... that can be cruel.

dogs housed in cages at puppy factories- THAT is cruel.

leaving a cute little fluffy dog until its coat is so matted that the dog cannot see properly, or walk comfortably ...THAT is cruelty.

Mass desexing will do NOTHING to stop humans treating pets badly ..and THAT is cruelty.

    Exactly.

  2. I used to really like politics but now I do not like the sameness from all parties. We now live in a world where 5%-10% of voters (swinging ones) call all the shots..so much for democracy.

:p I think I should start a campaign in my electorate where all even number households for Liberal, and the odd numbers vote Labor. Nothing like a very close poll and a marginal electorate to attract lots of political attention/govt funding.

    ;)

I think we are ready for this :D

Look at how many hung parliaments or close margins are across Australian states and the Commonwealth....the electorate is sending a very big message

  3. More importantly, I have very left leaning politics and I do not support PETA and I do not support us having our lives ruled by laws, nor do I support the mandatory desexing of animals nor do i support the current attempts to restrict me as a dog owner nor the restrictions on dog breeders.

Left politics and PETA do not go hand in hand

I used to think I was a Socialist. Then I studied politics and concluded that I wasn't.

Left and right are pretty much obsolete terms with regard to mainstream politics IMO. In a world of constant voter opinion polling and the race for the most mass appeal, all we're left (no pun intended) with now is different flavours of vanilla and mass voter apathy. Its like the two men and the donkey story - in trying to please everyone, you end up thrilling no one.

Come the revolution, I shall solve all of this. :p Once the cyclists have been sent off for re-education, I'll sort out dog welfare!!!

I so totally agree with you ;) :D

  5. Sounds crazy, but i don't think i'll be able to have another Rottweiler after this. How could i replace her....

I've now lost both female's, mother and daughter, to the same cancer. Both in the same area. Both in March, almost 4 years exactly apart.

    many condolences RL

I understand what you are saying, I am the same about GSD's, I can never have another :) but maybe one day I will be able to.

  6. Spot on powerlegs, I thought it was fairly clear, stop the killings of unwanted animals.
The petition seems to be asking the RS to dig into their savings and run a large worthwhile desexing program.

Not force anyone to desex, or stop anyone breeding.

They have the funds, they really should be running more advertised voluntary neuter programs especially in the lower socioeconomic areas.

I would suggest then that the message hasn't been clear enough as many of us thought the same way.

  7. On behalf of the MDBA I called the LGA and talked to the acting CEO. The LGA services all South Australian Local Councils.

I ascertained that the article was a bit of a media beat up as the LGA had no knowledge of the proposal until the news article was published.

The LGA will discuss the proposal so I asked about the process which I have outlined below.

    The process is:

    - The LGA executive will discuss the proposal possibly at their May meeting.

    - The proposal would need to have the majority of Council Representatives backing for it to be passed at that meeting.

    - If this meeting recommends the proposal then the LGA officers write up a report with their recommendations.

    - The report is sent to the Dog and Cat Management Board for their consideration possibly at their June meeting.

    - If the Dog and Cat Management Board accepts the recommendation they endorse the report.

    - The endorsed report is sent to the relevant Minister and if the Minister agrees with the recommendation it then goes through the Parliamentary process

    - The Parliamentary process is required because for this proposal to become Law the Dog and Cat Management Act will need to be changed.

People who wish to object to this proposal can write to the Dog and Cat Management Board outlining their concerns.

To me it seems that there are a lot of hurdles for this proposal to overcome before it would be accepted. I think it will be very expensive for Councils to manage, it may not be the best way to manage barking dogs and it needs Legislative changes before it can be accepted.

The MDBA will be watching what is happening with this and writing a letter to the Dog and Cat Management Board if this proposal gets recommended by the LGA.

If this is what the proposal means then I am all for it. Trouble is the proposal is too vague.

  9. Bloody hell,

This is about the killing of unwanted animals!!, extinct????, hello.

    GOBSMACKED

    sign or dont.

Can you answer the question on how this proposal will stop unwanted pets given unwanted means the pet is homed then disposed of?

  10. What if I don't want to desex my dog, my property ?

x2. My dog, my property and, in consultation with my vet, I want to make those decisions and make them taking into account my individual dogs needs not just process my dog like she is one of a crowd with the same needs as other dogs :p

  11. What about the health and welfare of the dogs?

Early desexing is not always the best health choice for a puppy/dog, especially larger breeds.

I too would like to see the proof that this strategy would do what is claimed

  12. I don't have a problem with using check chains - I will use whatever works best for the dog - however I have found that they don't always work on all dogs as you would expect and want them to.

I have a pretty headstrong and stubborn breed and using a check chain (correctly) have actually made pulling problems worse because it can desensitise some dogs with of the number of corrections that have to be given.

If you had said that to me 10 years ago I wouldn't have believed it but I have found it to be true with some dogs - not all.

I have now realised that the important thing is to start off really slowly when they are little - that is why that video seems like a method that would work for my lot.

I have started practicing already although I am debating whether I should use a clicker or just a voice marker???

I use a voice marker as it means one less thing to carry and manipulate

  13. Dear Dog Owner walking your dog offlead in an onlead only area:

    * You may think you're Cesar Milan and that your dog is perfectly trained, but how the hell do the rest of us know this? We're not telepathic and you and your dog look like every other owner and dog to us. Spare a thought for the rest of us and leash up.

    * Its easy to tell whether or not your dog needs to be onlead.. if there's no "dogs allowed offlead" signs, assume a leash is required.

    * Breed, size and age are not reasons that you don't have to obey the law. All dogs need to be leashed if required.

    * If I had a dollar for every time an owner has said one of these lines, I'd be rich:

    * He's never done that before.

    * He's gentle/friendly/just wants to say hi... often said about some pilar erect, stiff legged dog attempting to dominate yours.

    * He's just a puppy. Honey I don't care how old your dog is.. put it on a freakin lead.

    * IF your dog does something it shouldn't, all dog owners will pay for your arrogance.

Dogs aren't robots. Even well trained ones can chase a cat, get a fright and end up in traffic by accident. For everyone's sake, stop feeling special and leash up. You might just stop people abusing you for breaking the law, but who knows, you might save your dogs life as well. How you consider yourselves to be above the law beats me. :)

And while you're at it, carry some bloody poo bags. Feeling "special" often seems to relate to that requirement too. You dog's shit is as offensive as anyone else's people - pick it up.

    What a great post :laugh::cry:

  14. First off the OP said the dog walked by her side then the OP changed this part of the story and said the dog ran around for exercise so I am now assuming the dog is allowed to travel well away from the OP whilst it is off leash

This entire thread is ridiculous - Hey look at me I'm going to promote breaking the law every day and someone gets grumpy so I need to whinge or... certain breeds are horrible (even though I wouldnt know the breed if it bit me on the arse) to my illegal offlead dog. Smacks of one big beat up to me. No offence.

I totally agree....just that I made a mistake and confused the OP with mumtoshelley who doesn't get it.

The OP Kels84 does get it and has said she will be walking her dog on leash from now on.

  15. I'm really interested in this, if she walks perfectly and you're holding a lead, why the need to have her unclipped? What is the benefit if you are just walking down a footpath? Its not like she's in an open space running around, she's right next to you walking, so why not clip her up just for safety?

I want to know this, too. Is it like some trophy or status symbol to have your dog walking next to you without a lead attached? Why not just have it clipped for it's safety, and quite frankly, other people's safety. Annoys the heck out of me to see people doing this along footpaths. What if I want to walk my dogs ON LEAD, approaching an off lead dog is worrying.

I can't comment much on the OP as I found it too hard to follow. But I think I gathered out of it that the OP was walking their dog offlead in an onlead only area? Doesn't matter how good your dog is, laws are laws and disobeying them just makes dog ownership harder for the rest of us.

sorry got mixed up with who said what

  16. The other thing I did was to teach her to heal off leash in the hall (I have a long hallway) then in the garden.

In the hall I dropped treats onto the floor a little behind where I was walking and on the side I walk her so she never went ahead of me in case she missed a treat

She then didn't pull on the leash. I also vary the speed that I walk so she really needs to pay attention to me when we are walking.

She never pulls on the lead now and at one stage I thought she would never stop pulling.

  17. I am pretty sure all of Victoria is on lead unless in a designated area.

I knew a very well trained dog who once, and once only, forgot his training. And ran out onto a road. Pity it cost him his life.

For me this is the crux of the matter. I would never forgive myself if this happened to me so I make sure it never will.

My dog never leaves my side, is well behaved, focuses on me and has amazing recall BUT she is never off leash unless it is an area that is fenced off and off leash is allowed and there are no other dogs around (because I do not trust their temperament).

It only takes a nano second for an accident to happen and a dog is a living thing sometimes driven by it's own motivations.

I will not ever put my dog at that level of risk because the ramifications are unthinkable for me.

  18. I'm talking about these types of people not the people who have well trained dogs.

To me it's irrelevant. People whose dogs would kill another given the opportunity are so far at the end of the spectrum that they don't even come into consideration in this kind of situation as it is an absolute given that they should never ever be allowed off leash under any circumstances. They are not the ones who ruin it for everyone, the ones who ruin it for everyone are the ones who don't respect the law, and don't respect other people's right to walk without being harassed or worried by other people's dogs.

Also i find jack russells and fox terriers horrible little dogs no offense to people who own them but i haven't meet a nice one yet, All the ones i have meet have been very bossy and dominate to other dogs. Ny Shelley hates jack russels and fox terriers cause there the breeds who bully her the most, they bark in her ears which annoy her and they also snap at her too. So when i see these breeds i avoid them.

This was completely uncalled for. Simply saying 'no offense to people who own them' is NEVER going to remove the offensiveness from such a comment. If I owned one of these breeds I'd have the serious Sh!ts on over this comment and would be extremely offended.

My experience has been (not surprisingly) entirely the opposite. The people complaining are the ones who walk their dogs on lead and have to put up with their dogs being constantly harassed by someone's wandering, off lead "Precious".

    Well said!

I don't think yelling and swearing is an appropriate thing to do and I am appalled that some people think it is acceptable.

Nobody has said that it is acceptable. Most of us agree that it was over the top and could have been handled better, but that he would not have felt a need for it if the law had been followed in the first place.

If the off leash dog runs toward you or appears out of control, than a bit of yelling is ok, but that wasn't the situation in this case. Clearly the guy wasn't scared, otherwise he wouldn't have walked up to the so called aggressive and out of control dog with his dog.

Were you there? Did you witness the situation? Did you ask the man how he felt? Clearly, you are in no position to make a call on whether the guy was scared or not - perhaps he had to walk past quite close to them to get home.

this guy came flying in my direction, as stated I had my grey x puppy on leash and rotti beside me as the guy came at us my rotti move out of the way because he has so often been bitten by smaller dogs and now gives them a very wide birth he's not scared of them but wise of there mannerism

while this guy was up in my face his foxy had a go at my pup who was on the lead !!!!

what im getting at is,ok I was wrong to assume that it was a leash free area and I should have put frank on the lead but you just don't carry your self the way this guy did

He was trying to intimidate me and i had to use every bit of self control not to end up in bigger trouble. To many people are angry in this world!!!!. He could have informed me and there would not have been a problem instead he carried on like a pork chop and things could have ended a lot worse.

Have you stopped to consider he would have had no reason to act that way and most likely would not have reacted if you dog was on a leash?

I do not think you can call this guy an A$$ Hole when you were the first person in the wrong

  19. I do agree in some way that maybe you should have had your dog on lead but then i disgree too in a way. I walk my Shelley mainly all off lead walking she isn't walking beside me she walks up front a bit but i still have great control over her, One whistle or call of her name and she is back with me even if there is another dog around. But if i see another dog i call Shelley put her in heel say ignore but have my hand gently on her collar. I only let Shelley greet the other dog if the owners ask or say its ok. I find most of the people who complain about offlead dogs around here are the ones that can't control there dogs. There are no signs here stating if the dogs have to be onlead or off, I had Shelley offlead and was passed by police who didn't care, They have said how well behaved she is and how much control i had over her was amazing, They even said they wished all owners had there dogs under control like my Shelley was.

This is incredibly offensive. What happened to blame the deed not the breed?

You are breaking the law and you have been very lucky that up until now no one has reported you to council.

    Goodness
