  1. ...and sometimes it is just historical - like Border Collies. The fact that some colours are recognised forces people to register the dogs with the wrong colour. This can have major helath implications down the line (eg merle in the line).
  2. Glad to see he is getting acquainted with giants.
  3. Stupid question but if they are "man made breeds" (as most purebred dogs are), then surely they could just be recreated in future if people wanted them (of course it will take a few generations, but they aren't really ever going to be extinct, as they were developed from a few base breeds in the first place?).
  4. Unless this is a recent change it is not the case.
  5. I have a few recalls: The formal obedience one (run back super fast, line up directly in front of me, sit to attention - stiff body eyc ). I'd use this in trials if I ever actually went to one! I have my normal/emergency one (much like the one above, but the sit doesn't have to line up perfectly). Stay until released. Perfect for getting out of trouble or leaving the park as I put the leash on when he's in a sit. I also have a "check in " recall where he has to come back quickly (not at top speed) and get close without stopping or sitting. Perfect for getting him back near me if he strays too far. Why so many? Because I use them for different things . If I only had one it would become diluted because I wouldn't want to enforce strict obedience criteria every time I wanted him back to me .
  6. I agree with teekay - let them take the pup to your vet. If I was worried a breeder might take the dog if it was sick, I'd be taking the pup myself.
  7. I think it is hard for dogs to get under the good without help
  8. Honestly it is more basic than a basic obedience test. They do have to walk past someone holding a biscuit but they're on lead and you can talk to them.
  9. I've done the test. It your dog has the right temp and can walk on a lead you'll pass. I didn't do any prep for it.
  10. yes. And redirect her. If he realises a simple growl won't stop her then he'll have to try more.
  11. That second photo - how regal. He has a norty little face. Are you going to do agility with him?
  12. Yip - I walk the dogs before 6am here. Even without my reactive girl I'd do this as there are a few dogs here that walk off leash later in the morning. Main roads are also good because you're less likely to find off leash dogs running around. I haven't posted here in aaaaggggeees because things had been relatively good and stable. My nephew has moved in with me though and every single time he gets up and walks around she goes nuts. It has been two months of this constantly. He has fed her, gives her treats, does some training etc yet it happens every. single. day. I've gotten drugs as a last resort. The poor kid needs to feel like he can get a glass of water without all hell breaking loose.
  13. I've had my chilly dog ones for years and they still look great. They're not cheap but they're very warm and water proof. I like how the keep the chest and tummy warm too.
  14. Miss Pink :) Good - because she is my fave (so is miss pink from the previous litter).
  15. Some dogs don't tolerate a fully raw diet - my boy doesn't. I also think the whole " don't mix raw and dry" thing has been debunked as even elements in a raw diet are digested at different rates (offal vs meat vs bone). I just experimented and found what works for my dogs.
  16. And? Some purebreds cost about that much.
  17. You'd need a main registered dog to show though, even in the neutered division. I'd suggest getting to know a few breeders whose lines you like. Tell them you plans but don't ask for a pup yet. Help then groom and handle their dogs and show them that you're serious. After a year or two of building relationships and showing that this isn't a passing interest , I'm sure it would be a lot easier.
  18. Sigh. I never said I support people. What I said is that we've let them hijack animal welfare and anyone who cares about animal welfare gets branded a nutter, regardless of whether they are or not. I see it all the time on DOL: " you support x. PETA supports x. Therefore you support PETA". The logic is flawed.
  19. It is interesting how people have allowed PETA to hijack animal welfare and anyone who supports banning a sport or tighter controls is branded a nutter. I personally would like to see betting rescteicted. That way, those that love watching their dogs race will continue, and those after the money will have no reason to continue with the sport.
  20. I don't think they mean dog shows. Rather GAP and the like promoting rescue greys at "shows" (eg royal shows)
  21. Could she have swallowed something like a stocking? My dog has swallowed stocking footlets before and she did a long, spongey poo. Also, her diet seems low in bones if she's only getting mince and a few chicken necks. Human grade mince contains no bones.
  22. Before you pay annually do you see any changes to the policy ? I pay monthly and have always recieved an updated policy
  23. The email doesn't say breed specific exclusions are I. Place . It says your premium is based on risk (including breed) - they're two different things.
