  1. What I really liked as a first time puppy owner was when I called up the local vet surgery the lady who answered (vet nurse I assume) was really helpful, and spent ages with me over the phone going through all my very newbie questions.

She was so helpful, knowledgeable and patient and we hadn't even been into the surgery yet!

I like the scales in the waiting room - we were encouraged to bring our pup in whenever we wanted to get weighed and so going to the vet wasn't a bit deal

  2. Dream was a little pain for this - she's much better now, but when she was younger she'd try to hump legs in the evening when we were watching tv

We'd usually just 'kick' her off (i.e. remove her by moving the leg she was trying to attach to) - and ignore her, but she seemed to think it was a game and the behaviour escalated. One night I grabbed her off by the scruff and growled loudly which seemed to do the trick. I don't know if this is the right thing to do though!

She still humps her blankets some nights when she's really tired (fairly rare), or if we have visitors (charming)

She won't let other dogs hump her (her brother tried when he visited a few weeks back), so maybe she could tell the little fellow off

  3. I've heard good things about Urban although I haven't personally used them - if you search this forum you'll find a few threads with Brisbane puppy school recommendations

We did puppy school about 12 months ago through Ziggy's at Pet City (Mt Gravatt) and Bonnie's (also at Mt Gravatt). Both were good although quite different with Ziggy's being an 8 week course with supervised structured interaction, and Bonnie's being more ad hoc.

Your pup sounds pretty normal to me! I found puppy school was more helpful in teaching us about how to interact with our puppy than anything else!

  4. Our pup got picky about dry food at about 4 months old

We kept her going on it by mixing in Sardines, and sometimes peanut butter or pumpkin. Also scattering it on the floor seemed to make her more interested

We tried different flavours and different brands which she would eat for a week or two and then go off it

Eventually though she was sucking off the sardines (or other mixer) and spitting out the kibble and by about 6 months old she refused to eat it at all - I was doing the 15 mins etc and she went for three days without eating

We changed to raw diet and haven't had any issues since (except the 10kgs of kibble sitting in the laundry. lol).

  5. We give our beagle frozen chicken wings and chicken necks - at 3 months we gave her frozen necks and introduced wings later on. We also feed all meals from a kong or treat ball

When the weather is warmer, freeze a chicken neck (or two) in a butter container or ice cream container to make a 'chicken neck-sicle" - keeps a pup occupied for quite a while :cheer:

I also use the Happy Paws Treats huski mentioned in a treat ball now

ETA: Carrots are good too, but I usually watch her with those

  6. hmmm :D anyone know of any good puppy preschools around redbank plains on weekends or possibly mount gravatt in qld??

    Hi Suki

We were quite happy with the one run from Pets City at Mt Gravatt. We did the 8 week program. Lots of structured and supervised play (no free for alls) for the pups as well as teaching us

Pet City Puppy School - Ziggys

We also used Bonnie's at Mt Gravatt as well. The approach there was different, and less structured

edit - wrong pet store, oops

  7. Are you sure its the harness and not the car ride?

For putting the harness on, you could try having her on lead, then wrap the lead around your foot & stand on it, then put harness on - perhaps her on lead before you pick up the harness so you can put it on quickly and you aren't chasing her around with it  Once its on give her a treat/reward

  8. Can someone please give me some suggestion with regards to feeding amount?

I just read the hill's packet and it says for 10kg (4-9mths), its recommending 245g/day. I'm giving bobby about 1 cup / day plus a wing/neck,

should i increase my amount because i think the recommended is way too high ..but on the same note, i think he is growing, perhaps fooled by his innocent looks!

Any suggestions please?? Thank you...

How much does Bobby weigh now? Is he 10kgs already?

What is his weight like - can you see or feel his ribs? With our pup we tried to make sure you could feel her ribs if you felt hard - although at around 6/7 months she would fatten up then have a growth spurt and look really skinny

    pictures?? :)

1 cup of kibble doesn't sound like much - I think we were going with 1.5 - 2 cups at that age. Do you have kitchen scales? It helps to give you an idea of how much you are actually feeding if you can weigh it.

  9. It was suggested to us to put a bottle or jar with holes (I used empty vitamin jars) punched in the top and some Citronella oil in it, in the area where you don't want them to whizz

It did help for us somewhat but I think we let it go on too long before trying to fix the problem

  10. grow out of digging?? I hope so - our pup is 8 months now and still digs occassionally

Usually for ants or something though - we've found treating the ant problem has reduced the digging problem

Are the holes in the middle of the yard or near the edge?

ETA: By "hope so" I mean I hope she will, but don't actually believe it will happen

  11. We used dry food only for the first few months - then puppy went on hunger strike and refused to eat it anymore - she's been on raw for the last 2 months

Our girl is 8 months, and about 12kg, we give her ~175gm of raw mix (Canine Complete White from Canine Country at Woodridge) split into two meals (morning and night) + 2 chicken necks or a chicken wing every second day (on average sometimes more often) + a meaty bone once a week, and sardines maybe 2/3 times a week (such that she gets a can of sardines over the week)

Sometimes she seems 'hungry' a couple of hours after tea so I give her a handful of kibble (which we have left over from pre-hunger strike) - my logic is if she really is really hungry she'll eat it

She's pretty much finished growing upwards - just needs to fill out now - she's not skinny or fat for the moment

When she was your pup's age, we would of been giving her about 3/4 cup of kibble (~75gm) split into three meals + chicken necks/bones/carrots to chew on. I noticed that she would go through skinny and fat stages - one day she'd look like she was getting fat, then over night she'd have a growth spurt and be looking skinny - so if your boy is in a growing stage I'd guess thats what you are seeing

Have you tried weighing a typical days food allowance?

  12. Thanks for that Gills...

Which puppy pre-school did you go to?? ... i am expecting my pup but not for some time yet - after mid-Mar so now doing research on puppy pre-school. I know they do one in RSPCA but don't know if any good ...

Anyone has any experience with the RSPCA in Springwood?

We went through Ziggys which used a training room at Pet City (Mt Gravatt East)

We also did a couple of weeks at Bonnie's as the class we were enrolled in at Ziggys didn't start until our pup was going to be 12 weeks old and we (being first time puppy owners) were worried that was too long to wait

  13. Is it true that "puppy pre-school" is all about the adults learning and the puppies left to play for themselves? ... can someone enlighten me?

Sort of. At the puppy preschool we went to there were 'supervised' play sessions where the puppies got to play and the trainer educated us about what to watch for in body language so we could better understand whether it was a positive interaction or not, also she worked on improving the pups interactions with each other giving us exercises and training to do (e.g. there was one pup that was body blocking and trying to dominate the others so the trainer helped his owners with that, while there was another pup that was really shy etc)

We also did alot of learning and training with the pup - sit, stay etc, as well as teaching the pup to accept us holding and touching.

I found that puppy school was like all good training in that it was teaching us how to train and interact well with our pup - made a huge difference for me as I never had dogs before.

The play times were also really great for our pup as she is an only dog and needed to play with pups her own age. Our PPS had additional 'play sessions' in addition to the PPS classes

  14. That would be a great thing to join! but first I need to get him not to bite on this leash. I've only taken him outside once for a brief moment, as he is still awaiting his 2nd vaccination.

He tends to bite/chew on the leash every time I try to put it on just to see his reaction. I've put it on during his meals so he may feel positive about it, but during other times, he simply bites/chews!!

Any idea what I should do with the leash before I have him out and about?

We put the leash on around the house and walked our puppy around the house and yard as soon as we got her, sure she wasn't so keen on it to start with but with treats and praise she soon got the hang of things - we still have an issue with her pulling on the lead quite badly though - still working on that

...and the beagle club walks are so much fun :):rofl:

  15. Yes, i'm in southside brisbane, i've went to pet city to get a brochure for puppy school, any other recommendations?

he can now respond to "come" and "sit" most times as long as he is not sniffing away something!!

We did the puppy school through pet city with Ziggy - it was great as the trainer has beagles herself and understands their idiosyncrasies. Also the group was really small - if your pup is 11wks already I'd be keen to get him into PPS as soon as you can
