Thanks for that link Muttaburra, that looks to be why terriers are called terriers, it's interesting to note that the description for the Australian terrier says "small greyish wire-haired breed of terrier", I alway thought they were that beautiful rusty red colour. The description does say terriers are usually small, active, and short-bodied breeds of dog, originally trained to hunt animals living underground, obviously the Airedale and the Black Russian Terrier are unusual terriers. :rolleyes:

Westies were used to hunt down otters as well...perhaps they dug them out of their burrows? if terriers are a dog that is used for killing vermin in borrows I would wonder what sort of vermin lives in a burrow that a Black Russian Terrier could get down...a bear perhaps? I was reading the Caucasian Ovcharka thread and on post #50 a Russian Black Terrier was mentioned....my question is..what denotes a "terrier" as a type of dog? I know it is not the size! as Airedales are a pretty big/tall dog.

Yes!, thanks Marina, there is a store in Cleveland I had better visit...I didn't know they existed! I live on one of the islands in Moreton Bay so it is fairly close (what are their dogs? http://www.petcafe.com.au/Cleveland_index.html ) I make up a big batch of my own raw vege/fruit mix in the food processor, put it in containers and freeze, then mix a bit with their turkey or minced chicken-wing meat, add a bit of linseed meal or kelp and they gobble it up BUT sometimes I run out so if I could buy some it'd be good.

I think I will buy some of that Ichthammol Ointment dancinbcs. Also a handy plant to grow so you have it handy is Aloe Vera, just break off a leaf and smooth the cooling gel onto bites, little cuts, grazes or rashes...works a treat!

me too Poodlefan...I also use Hypericum herbal ointment, it has lavender and tea tree in it as well, I also have 'The Scarless Healer ointment (it is calendula, Hypericum and aloe in it)...I think the base is beeswax as you have to warm it a bit, it's really sticky and a bugger to wipe off and dirt sticks to it BUT it is a fantastic healer!, I also use paw paw ointment but the dogs eat that off pretty quickly. if they get green and or black ant bites rub onion on the bite, takes away the pain.

Daisy mirrors the other two but mostly when there is food to be offered, when we first got her 11 months ago (when she was 7) she wouldn't eat the pieces of banana/cucumber/pawpaw/carrot we offered, she soon changed her tune when she realised she may be missing out on stuff. I don't think she had ever been in the water either, but will now follow Mac into the sea up until their feet leave the bottom, she is pretty proud of herself

I bought a few rolls of brushwood fencing, some from Mitre 10 (cheaper than Bunnings) and Crazy Clarks. I think I paid $25-$30 a roll for it...easy to put up...get a couple of packets of zippy ties while you are there. You can just pin it to the existing fence, It looks good and the dogs get pretty sick of trying to eye each other off through thy tiny gaps Also I have used bamboo blinds that I bought at garage sales or charity shops, you can usually pick them up for $5-$10. If they are long enough you can cut them in 1/2 horizontally, tie the ends off, and attach them to the fence. They look good with ferns or palms in pots in front of them.

The man got out of the car and swam to safety, leaving the huskies in the front seat of the ute. Country Fire Authority rescuers managed to save the pups a short time later. The 43-year-old driver found at a nearby property is assisting police with inquiries. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, a police spokeswoman said.

Love this thread, I'd be bored if my dog didn't raise the middle claw from time to time. It's nifty there are so many different breeds with so many different attributes. Yep, SkySoaringMagpie, mine don't raise their middle claw, they just stick their tails up even higher
