Let her run and play :) Don't let her 'play rough' with other dogs, and I agree on keeping her out of competitive sports at this point, particularly the lure coursing in case she takes a tumble at high speed (we will see that monkey magic again soon enough :p ) but keeping her fit is good, as mentioned, for a hopefully easy whelping. She should self limit as she gets bigger - generally in the last couple of weeks.

Hoping my bitch is pregnant...she is 21 days today from her first mating, and I'm not sure how much exercise is too much, too little or just enough! She is a very active little dog (Border Terrier) and lives to chase her ball, running and jumping , putting everything into it. Until she came in to season last month she was actively competing in lure coursing, tracking and Earthdog, which has all ground to a halt for the time being (a little sadly..she was just hitting her straps in all three sports...roll on next season! )

I have been a little nervous about letting Her run and jump as normal (for her)now - we walk instead much to her disgust! So I'd love to know what level of exercise is considered "normal" and safe for an expectant mum...fingers crossed!

Hi - Barn Hunt and Earthdog are two different sports!

We do (ANKC) Earthdog here in Oz - in Victoria, NSW, SA and Qld, but there are no set-ups in the other states/territories as yet. It has been going for around 18/19 years here in NSW, we do it at the Dogs NSW complex at Orchard Hills where we have a paddock set up with trenches etc. down the back of the complex, and the sport runs through the winter months from approx May - September each year. It's one of the few sports where there is a designated list of ANKC breeds which are eligible, plus AR dogs "of earthdog type" who have to pass an Introductory Test before they can go on to Novice/Senior Master. We are not allowed to use live quarry as they do in the USA (their quarry is usually tame rats which are in specially built cages which then go in the dens behind another set of bars).

Barn Hunt looks as if it is a pretty popular, growing, sport in the US. It is "owned" by one person as a company, and she is pretty protective of her rules and ideas. It hasn't been done here at all yet. If we were to start doing it, or something like it, over here we would have to call it something different, devise our own rules and regulations, and again, would not be allowed to use live rats like they do over there (they put the rats in poly pipes with air holes and then hide them in the hay bales). How the dogs would react to searching through hay bales for whatever we could come up with as "quarry" is a guess.....probably just like in Earthdog, some are happy to do it whatever they're chasing, others just turn up their noses when they realise it's not alive!

That's not to say we haven't thought about how it could be done! One idea would be to do it in a fenced off area outside with hay bales piled up (if no-one has a barn we could use) - I'm sure lots of our terriers/ratting dogs would adore it and have a whole heap of fun, I know my Borders would!

I'm mostly going to check out the Aussie Terriers and to see who's representing them -- if anyone -- and I'm hoping to meet some salukis too.

Earthdog will be on down at the den area, past the herding paddocks......eligible breeds include Aussie Terriers, so if you get a chance, wander down and see how it works - the terriers and dachshunds love it!

So what do they actually show in the live streaming? I get the impression it's all the happenings in the main arena, which is agility, DWD etc., but not the breed rings for individual breeds....which is sad because I'd love to see my breed in its entirety, but a hard ask with over 300 entries!

Have you considered buying a dehydrator and making your own? They're not expensive, I got mine on eBay, and make all sorts of dried jerky, offal, fruit and veg - great fun!

Mac has been on Propalin for mild incontinence for about three months having previously been on Stilboestrel - and he seems to have become a really angry westie. He and Andy had a really full on fight last night while I was out. The only damage is a deep tooth mark below Mac's left eye. So I gave him an AB and tramadol last night when I got home and he slept comfortably, bathed it this morning and I think it will be OK now I've cleaned it up.

I finally got around to reading the flyer which accompanies the Propalin and it says that aggression can be a side effect. I'm seriously thinking of leaving him off the Propalin for a couple of days and then switching him back to Stilboestrel after a discussion with my vet.

Has anyone else had this problem with Propalin? What did you do?

Yes, definitely! My Border Terrer bitch was put on to Propalin a few years ago now for incontinence, and she became quite hyper, nervy and aggro (though she never picked fights with my other dogs). After about 5-6 months I took her off it, she levelled out and, best of all, hasn't had a problem with incontinence since then.....touch wood!

I've been really enjoying my dehydrator,but none of the things I mention next are "long chew" stuff though

Dried sweet potato, chicken jerky, beef liver/kidney/heart, fruits etc. The dogs and I really enjoy our dried treats, and it's nice to know exactly what they are made of. And much cheaper than the commercial stuff!

I just don't buy stuff like rawhide, jerhigh etc. any more -

Have given it to two of my spayed bitches over the years, on and off.

One had no effects whatsoever that were visible. I did keep reducing the dosage until I felt it was just holding her, and kept it at that.

The other got quite anxious and nervy on it at full dose - I took her off and she had no wetting for a couple of years, but she is back on it now (13 years old Border Terrier), but at a quite reduced dosage about 4 times a week. And she doesn't seem to be showing any of the earlier nervy/anxious behaviour.

Just got Osopure Bison (not Salmon) grain free. My lab eats anything and it's hard to tell if there are any signs of trouble or improvements as I'm not a vet and we are in the early days, really. We'll keep it updated if there are some major improvements/illness.

Is that one of those with garbanzo beans in it? If so, it made my dogs fart HEAPS :D

It's lots of fun, and the dogs enjoy it. There is quite a lot of sitting and getting up again - how is he with that? But you could certainly have lots of fun teaching him stuff. My feral 11 year old agility girl (thankfully fit ) doesn't believe in obedience - but she really enjoys Rally - although she'd like that to be faster as well.

My friend has a 13yo Border Terrier who has just achieved her RN title with her third pass at the Sydney Royal...go, little Jerry! But she has decided to retire Jerry at this point, mainly because of the pivots, jumps etc. in the more advanced levels. They have had such fun doing it together, though. I'd say give it a try and have a good time :)

Had about 1/2 and 1/2 do it over the years. I don't believe it's something they learn - well none of the dumb half here learned it anyway :)

Funniest thing is give them the lid off the ice cream container, some don't care but others put their foot on it then freak out about stuff on my foot mum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheerful attitude and BIG VOICE!

My Border Terrier youngster, a real power chewer, has always loved deer antlers - there were two hanging around the house when she arrived as an 8-week old puppy because the older dogs were only interested on and off. She worked her way through one until it got too short and I got too nervous to let her keep chewing. I bought a couple more just last week, and she is enjoying them, but it does worry me the amount of really hard chewing that goes on, especially the noise of teeth grating on antler all the time...really sets my teeth on edge! And I also worry about the effect it might have on her teeth. So I limit the chewing to a short time each day now.

I have also heard a couple of vets, esp. in the USA where they are used more I think, say they don't recommend them at all as they cause so much damage to teeth.....

It's not the ANKC's job to "frighten" anyone into doing the right thing.

It's not illegal to show a docked dog and all the ANKC need do to be seen to be doing the right thing is make sure that those exhibiting , show only "lawfully" docked dogs and puppies.

Again, it's up to the RSPCA and the like to police any laws under POCTA. If vets suspect that a client is deliberately harming a dog or litter, so as to have the tail removed, then they need to report it.

For the ANKC to retain creibility it shouldn't "encourage" members to break the law by turning a blind eye to it either.

Anyone who is a showie would have heard chinese whispers similar to the allegations made of deliberate tail breaking to enable a "legal" operation to take place.

The more the people whispered the louder it became.

This proposal is the reaction of one delegate to the noise.

It remains to be seen if others think the same way.

It does seem a remarkable coincidence that the breeds most affected by the dreaded tail breakinjg syndrome are those of the previously docked variety however.

I've been mulling over that, too.

What if, say, a Golden Retriever (first breed with a lovely long tail that popped into my head) damaged its tail and had to have it docked...would it be allowed to be shown?

Same toshman - although it was too rich for my boy as his regular food. If you buy the food as training treats it is really affordable (much cheaper than their treat range).
