  1. The puppies are one week old today & Floss is feeding every hour or so during the day when I am with her. At night Floss & Bubs are on their own now, we have an oil heater on & they are very comfortable together. I am in from early am & go to bed late so keep a close eye on them all. Floss is at my feet now & is enjoyng a break from the demands of Motherhood. I often wonder when I should take Mum back in to feed? What time frame is recommended between feeds? Thank You Aziah
  2. Sorry... Another question, How long should Floss spend away from her pups with us between each feed? While Floss is besotted with her babies & a great Mum she remains very attached to me as a new rescue. We go in & out together to check on the puppies after feeding every half hour or so, most often they are all sound asleep, though I feel as though she would also like some quality down time away from the puppies. Perhaps I am reading to much into this I am sure I am.... I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions re this. Thank You in advance
  3. Thank you Aziah for your help We have a long way to go, though all is well so far.
  4. Thank you Thats how I felt it worked as I have spent a lot of time watching the puppies during feeding & have seen the change in how they feed. So once they stop pushing & pulling & simply drink quietly they are in heaven The pups are gaining weight & are sleeping well, quiet & content.
  5. Thank You, Yes Floss is feeding the pups well and going by the puppies weights they are doing well. I can post the weights if needed. The puppies look full & healthy. I understand that pushing & pulling is very natural though through watching them all change from pushing & pulling to a quiet phase I wondered if this was something I should also be aware of? I am just trying to understand this all a lot better I think & gain some knowledge. Floss & bubs are set up in our garden flat as it is private & away from our children & other dogs . Floss does need me to open the door at times. I am not able to say that she can simply come & go on her own the whole time although this is what I aim for & she has this access most of the time.
  6. Hello, I have never posted in the Breeders Community before. If this post is inappropriate in any way please move or delete it. I have a lovely Border Collie female 'Floss', here who was in whelp while imponded at HP pound. Floss came here for quarantine, though had her bubs at the end of her quarantine period. Floss & the babies are well set up & doing very well so far. Floss is a great Mum and the puppies are a week old today. They are gaining weight & were weighed after birth & again 4 days later. I have all of the weights if you would like them. My question is re feeding; I have noticed once first attaching the puppies push & pull with their mouths and front feet, a while later they "appear" to drink very steadily & stop pushing & pulling. In terms of ensuring they are all doing well re feeding, how long should they feed during the quiet time? Floss spends time with us once her puppies are fed & cleaned, how long would you recommend for this between feeds? Thank you
  7. I am so pleased that Logan has been given every opportunity for finding rescue. I know the staff are also very happy for Logan, esspecially Ann & Theresa. I agree that there are some breeds in particular who need to be assessed carefully by someone experienced with the breed. Its great that you have also consulted experienced breeders as well K9 Angel. There are times that dogs may be missread, there are many reasons for this. Quite often it can be as simple as a funny noise they insist on making to express themselves, unusual eyes or features etc. Gabe the stunning BC boy recently at Hawkesbury is a great example of this. Thank you & Best of luck with Logan
  8. Congratulations to all the deserving winners, there are so many amazing people out there!~ I am so proud of Chloe I could pop! what an outstanding young lady and a wonderful advocate for rescued pets, just like her beautiful Mum
  9. Wishing & praying for positive news for dear little Luki. Gosh he is sweet....
  10. I agree - greyhounds generally do not do well in a pound situation. To be "dumped" then serve time in a stressful envirnoment, then pts is not a nice way for a greyhound to go. Far kinder to pts. Greys are surrendered to shelters here in Vic, and it is interesting to note that the owners often tick the "rehomed as a pet" box, which is incorrect acording to GRV when we ring to have their ear brands checked. I can see the spin doctoring now - "Increase in greyhounds rehomed in NSW... 40% rehomed as pets..blah blah" when in actual fact they have been dumped then pts and the box ticked! Yes, I agree with the spin doctoring & agree there needs to be far more accountablity. I agree with your point where Greyhounds struggle in pound environments. Mostly due to heat & cold. I understand pounds are very individual in their care & rehoming. Hawkesbury do coat the dogs during winter, and they make sure the Greys in particular get out into the run each day. They have overhead sprinklers during hot days & do the best they can under the circumstances. But they are only one pound. As surrenders Greyhounds have very little time at Hawkesbury, 24 hours, 48 most often, so lengthy impound time is not an issue. Many Greys are kenneled during their lives anyway. What is crucial (short term) in an effort to give these dogs a chance is a temp assesment with someone who is experienced with the breed. This is only a brief indication in the pound environment though it is a great start. I have met so many standout Grey's at Hawkesbury who have moved into rescue & the most incredible homes. I do not for one moment believe we can help them all, though until they are assesed we simply dont know what potential they may have in a home environment. Assesment as a minmum is so important. I shudder to think of those wonderful souls not afforded this opportunity. It remains mindblowing for me that this breed in particular are such a disposable comodity. A captive workforce who have no voice. They do not even recognise their "name" when entering the pound as they are simply a number. Sorry for the rant It breaks my heart.
  11. Thank you Daisy I too would like to learn more about the legislation. I am assuming that this has been put in place to stop imhumane killing of Greyhounds. This is not uncommon. I agree that at least they have a chance of being assesed in some pounds. Greys who test well, then may find an opportunity in rescue & a new home. It is much cheaper to surrender a Greyhound at a pound than it is to have them pts by a vet/pay for body removal etc. This is why there is concern that we will see more Greyhounds surrendered, combined with the fact that before the legislation takes effect any Greys not up to scratch will be surrendered so owners & trainers are not accountable for them. Rescuers of this delightful breed are already struggling to keep up, there is going to be enormous pressure & some very sad moments ahead. There have been Greyhounds surrendered last minute on a weekend after breaking their legs during racing at Hawkesbury. It is devastating to witness an animal who's life appears to be so worthless to those who are responsible for it. Nic
  12. I agree this is very concerning. Personal threats should be repoted to Police without question, I would feel very worried personally. Having said that, why on earth would people insist on further tormenting an already twisted soul here on this thread? Comments on how she manages her kids with or without a walker, assumptions re glasses of wine and what ever else has come up are irrelevant. I have a back ground in disability services, brain injury and MH issues, it's not pretty. The majority of people have pointed out that their screening and adoption processes are right on track and have stopped this person before even getting a chance. Thats exactly how it should be.
  13. Awesome Vickie!! I love the photo of them weaving together Trim is incredible! Your son is very cute too!
  14. Healing thoughts for Miss May and her rescuers. Rescue is at times not just for those who can and will be saved. It is always so much more than that. Rescue is also a sanctuary..... empathy, great compasion and if needed a dignified and meaningful death. 'May' sounds as though she is in great hands. Wishing you all the very best, onwards and upwards Miss May! Nic
