    Opal

One week today. I was still working on Opal at this time but I already knew it was futile. I feel so broken.
  2. In my anguish I missed the full report from the death. pulmonary thromboembolism is the diagnosis. Nothing I could have done.
  3. this is all the vet said. I will get my regular vet have a chat and see if she can find out more. I have discussed the case and reviewed the images with my colleagues this morning and we are in agreeance that the degree of haemorrhage in the lungs is likely more significant than from just CPR alone and most likely to be the cause of death.

    Opal

Well I don't really know how to say this but Opal died this morning. It was instant. I did CRP for around 20/30 minutes while trying to get a vet. Had to ring a friend to ring one for me. Couldn't take the time to find a pen to write down a number. I've never had a dog die like this. I've always been able to help them. I'm in shock, I can't believe she was fine one minute and dead the next. Vet has done an autopsy, will get the report tomorrow. Main possibility is some bleeding thing, her lungs were full of blood. Photos were taken of Opals heart and the vet's colleagues will discuss tomorrow, but Amy thinks more the bleeding thing. I'll post the correct name when I get the report. Opal was 5 3/4 years young. My only consulation is she had no idea what happened.

  6. Most likely a mix and some girls have large nipples whether they have had a litter or not. Different breed but you couldn't tell my girls had had even a heat, let alone a litter.
  7. Maybe after the 6 weeks are over @Boronia. Just doing what the specialist wanted. Though would be good for the others.
  8. We are 3 weeks into the 6 weeks of supplements and injections. Can't see a difference myself so I guess we are heading to the denervation, in the not too distant future. Opal is still full of beans and loves her walks but we don't go too far or she cries later that day. Thanks for asking @persephone. Next appointment is July 18th with Dr Andrew.
  9. Are the papers in your name and are you a member of DogsQld? Be aware, when push comes to shove, most of those family and friends won't want a pup when the time comes. Breeders on Dogz will not sell you a bitch to breed from as you are not yourself registered with DogsQld as a breeder. Join the nearest Dachshund club and see what health tests are done on the breed. I know you can't breed a dapple to a dapple because of health issues. Prices vary because they can. Each individual breeder sets their own price, the more a parent has done, imported, titles etc the more expensive the pup. Are you prepared to lose the bitch, who you will love, due to pregnancy or whelping issues, prepared to pay for a c-section, dead pups etc? Breeding is not for the faint hearted that's for sure.
  10. If the breeder is happy to keep the pup an extra two weeks then I don't see a problem and I also understand you. I'd want to pick up my own dog as well.
  11. I think it's most likely too late for Wilson but we can still hope
  12. I never had a problem with 2 female GSD's together but they were all hearing dogs and could hear my growl if things were getting a bit wild, which stopped them in their tracks. So something to consider that your deaf dog won't hearing your warning to cut it out.
  13. it can be done but I'd be looking elsewhere for a breed that is a bit more laid back. All the above have great responses to your question. Besides what they have said I'd be asking what happens if dog and cat do not get along? Which animal has to be rehomed and how would the people feel about that? Would it break your family apart? A lot of men want "a mans dog" but is that the best fit for your family?
  14. I commend you for taking responsibility, thank you.
  15. I've owned several GSD, one pound puppy and several Greyhounds. No favourites, the two pure breeds both have/had very different characteristics and both fitted perfectly into my life at the time I had them. My little mutt just happened and she was perfect as she was.
  16. so sorry this happened to you. Impossible to say what may happen, sadly dogs that are attacked by other dogs often never get over it. I wish you luck finding a good trainer who may be able to help you and your girl.
  17. from what you say I think you and Lexa will cope with another pup very well. As for the fright outside, if Lexa's temperament is sound she'll bounce back quickly regardless of her hearing.
  18. The girls get raw carrot for lunch. They devour them.
  19. I've always used the people Rescue Remedy on the dogs, alcohol wasn't a problem. One thing I've heard about but haven't tried is cotton wool in the ear with a sock over the ears. Toe cut off so it's like a really firm snood. Beej does have a fine set of ears on him. Very cute.
  20. I wonder about the thunder shirts. Opal gets so hot, like boiling to touch, and I worried a thunder shirt would make her hotter. Luckily she found her own safe spot.
  21. I've tried a few different things, all seemed a bit so so. What worked for my girl was she chose an open crate to go to. She's a bit sound sensitive as well. She still shakes like an earthquake but seems settled in "her" spot.
  22. I'm in Victoria and my vet used Global to microchip my last litter nearly 6 years ago. I hadn't heard of them either. Haven't lost any of my dogs so can't say how any registry reacts. You don't search each registry, the chip should take you right there. Except for NSW and, in Vic, all retired Greyhounds who now have their own registry. I believe they are not linked to any other, like NSW. Stupid idea in my opinion.
  23. Yes I remember those days but I thought organ meat was 5%. Certainly wouldn't hurt to give the 200gm but I'd split it up over a week. My dogs wouldn't touch it!
