  1. Shaking my head in disbelief at just how many of you think an e-collar is ok to use on dogs. Its NOT ok ! Poor bloody dogs.

Neither is a steel cap boot, or a lump of wood, or being banished from family time, in the hands of an idiot. Please do some thorough research into the positive benefits of this training tool and how it could save an animals life before you come to this conclusion.

You're entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine.

  2. I work as a professional horse groom. Where I work no horse comes in for training or lessons without having been vaccinated. I love my job but its not worth dying for. I believe my life and all the others who are in close contact with horses, is more important than any breeding future of a mare or stallion you may own who you believe may be adversely affected. Regarding the dogs who are testing positive..in my opinion it will be because they ate manure from the infected horse or horses. The dogs SO love to eat manure.

  3. I have my 2 acre property fully fenced with 6ft solid timber fences. The neighbours kids on more than one occasion climbed that fence to retrieve their ball in spite of the fact I have 4 large dogs in my yard and in spite of the fact that each time they did it I happened to be home and gave them a good yelling at. I called my local ranger to ask where I stood if they were bitten...( unlikely but possible as all dogs have the capacity) only to be told my dogs would be in the wrong. WTF !!!!!!! but they are the rules like them or not. Happily they seem to have got the message after I turned the hot wire on which runs on the inside of my fence

  4. Surrender the dog to the pound....they legally have to hold the dog...put your name down on the dog to adopt if the owners don't show...once you have adopted the dog then surrender him to rescue for re homing. Of course this will cost you as you will have to pay the adoption fee from the pound and also probably for treatment of kennel cough when he comes out as it's almost inevitable he will have kennel cough after being in there.

  5. See another vet. Blood tests are routine for picking up thryoid problem etc. A vet who told me they could not do a blood test for whatever reason would not fill me with confidence. Hope you can find the problem it must be so worrying.

  6. Hi again......does anyone know of anyone that makes unlined rain coats? I like the look of the ones wolf den makes but after emails and calls to them they have not replied :( so I need to look else where, I have found a lovely lady that is making warm polarfleece coats but I wanted a water proof coat unlined to go over the top on wet raining days, Ive been searching the web but can only find warm coats which is not what I want, so does anyone make coats or know of any sites?

Hi Raya....I am in the process of having some fleece vests made for my dogs by Wolfs'Den. I had my emails answered by them though they were a bit slow. Maybe try again ?

  7. Hi Keema....I have no experience of staffies so don't know their play style at all..I can tell you about pointers though. I have four and also do pointer breed rescue. Pointers are a wonderful family dog and generally have very soft, sooky temperments. They have never met a couch they did not love and need to be with their humans. Pointers need LOTS of exercise and this must include being able to RUN...walking is not really enough. If they are not kept well exercised and mentally stimulated they will amuse themselves by de constructing all your landscaping and shredding all their bedding LOL!! They are extremely affectionate generally and gentle with kids though a young exuberant pointer might accidently knock over a small child. They are extremely playful with other dogs...not sure how suited a staffy and pointer are as playmates others on here will know more than I do about that. They LOVE playing with other pointers. Pointers do not do well with a heavy handed training style, they can be quite sensitive so could be quite different to a staffie in that regard. I see you are in Victoria....Marinapoint would be a good breeder to contact to find out more. Yvonne is very approachable and has lovely temperment dogs. From my observations pointers interact really well with other gun dogs.Do lots of research, pointers are the most wonderful breed of dog to own but they are not a breed for everyone so please be sure you think the pointer will fit your situation. Good luck with your research and I hope you find the dog you are looking for you sound like a very caring owner.

  8. My friend is thinking about moving to Brisbane and is trying to suss out the best council areas for dogs (she has four).

Does anyone have any advice or info?

    :thanks:

I live in Logan and find they are pretty good about multiple dogs. If you are on over 1/2 acre (I think it is) you can have four. All I did was fill out the paperwork, pay the fee and have a property check. I have four dogs.

  9. If you can find out who the owner is perhaps an offer to buy the horses ?? might be worth a try...at least then you could either try to get them healthy again or have them put down. I know that is a cost you should not have to shoulder but it would be in the best interests of the horses if they could be legally owned by a responsible owner.Just another way of looking at things. :(

  10. Sorry you are having itching problems. One of my dogs has seasonal allergies too. This is what I have done to help control the symptoms.

First of all we did a course of steroids from the vet to get the symptoms dampened down...then I switched to an all raw diet...she stays inside for the most part of the day in summer and spring ( her choice but it helps the situation)...have put her on chinese medicine based allergy pills by Fusion ( buy from health food store, take a couple of months to help if they are going to help) and use human excema cream on her itchy spots twice a day, from the Moo Goo range. She loves me doing the cream and I am sure it helps somewhat.

I have tried to get the Calendular tea to use but so far have been unable to buy it.

I see an improvement in her with doing all this but it does not fix it just keeps it somewhat under control and the dog more comfortable.

Antihistamine only works for an acute phase for example if she comes up with welts.....taken with a few hours it will help with that acute itchiness. The long term itch requires managing.

I hope you can find some things to use which may help you out. Cheers, Robyne

  11. Great idea....Hi everyone I'm Robyne from English Pointer Rescue Australia......a small group of us started English Pointer Rescue Australia at the beginning of this year. It's going well and we are starting to get a small network of supporters which is growing all the time. We are on FB and will have a website coming in the near future. We rescue pointers only and do not do xbreeds. I am on a big learning curve with all this and have come across some lovely rescue people who are only too happy to share knowledge. My hope is we continue to grow and help pointers in need as we are getting more and more of them coming into rescue and shelters. Cheers, Robyne

  12. Years ago we used Xanax on our previous dane and greyhound for storm anxiety.

They showed no signs of aggression, but took to taking food off the table and benches, which they NEVER normally did. With both the dogs, we could leave biscuits on the coffee table for the night and they never touched them, but after a dose of Xanax, both would dig in the bin or try to get something off the bench if it was left out. Munchies!!!!

  13. The benzodiazepine drugs can cause temporary loss of learned responses and loss of inhibition (which is most significant in cases of aggression).

I only really prescribe alprazolam as an adjunct treatment in cases of severe separation anxiety or storm / noise phobias and although I warn owners about the possible side effects I do my best to avoid giving to any dogs with a history of aggressive behaviour. It can occasionally cause a paradoxical excitement as well which I always warn owners about. I always recommend giving trial doses prior to actually needing the medication and very rarely prescribe drugs just to 'settle' animals down.

My boy has been prescribed it to treat EXTREME storm and noise phobia (think teraing apart steel with his teeth, and ripping doors down in panic....), for occasional use (along with another drug for everyday use). I have also been told to give trial doses until we work out which dose works. He has NO aggression history at all, including resource guarding, so hopefull we should be ok then!!!

Hi Willow..I use xanax for 3 of my dogs....one of whom has extreme storm phobia (the other 2 are less severe) I have had no problems with any of them in regards to aggression. I found it useless for the storms in the beginning but discovered I wasnt giving enough. Discussed it with my vet and now I give 2 tablets initially and top her up with one tablet every 4 hours if needed.I found that this made a huge difference in the result I got. In conjunction with this she was put on Clomicalm ( sounds like you are using this too ?) for 3 months while I worked with a behaviorist for this particular dog and it's really helped. You might want to look into doing that as well. Good luck with it, extreme storm phobia is no joke and can be terribly hard to manage. My severely phobic dog is now off Clomicalm and is manageable with the xanax and using the training techniques we learned. :)
