  1. Does anybody on this forum know how to contact the person who runs Whelping Supplies. I ordered the puppy ID collars through the on line site and had to make payment through Bedigo Bank which took me a few days organising time away from small puppies. Paid the money on the 4th Feb sent email again from their on line site (supposed to respond in 24hrs) Nothing. Any ideas please. Really need these collars as the ones I am using have been washed so much they keep coming off.

    Advice would be appreciated.

  2. 99.9% of my litters have been by frozen semen commencing in the early 90's. In the last few years I have been doing the following and have had 100% success. Lost a complete line because I waited until day 5 and the bitch was out by then this happened over a 2 year period.

You need a good repo vet. As I am in Sydney use Robert Zammit. He is excellent at predicting when mating should take place. Please note every season is different.

Firstly have your girl's thyroid tested. Usually done a month before expecting bitch to come in season. If any problems can be treated. I do this every time I want to mate one of my girls.

As soon as I see blood my girls are very clean straight to the vet for progesterone testing. This usually happens on Day 2. Progesterone test every 2 days. Once mated I then progesterone test again. Using this protocol I have had litters of 12, 10, 8, 7.

Also I always use maiden bitches and my girls are always over 3 years of age. My belief is they are not mature enough in my breed. I want them to have a life too. The litter of 12 was the 3rd litter for this girl she only cycles once every 12 months and she came in unexpectedly and my daughter wanted a pup. As she was nearly 7 though okay she will only have a couple she had the last laugh 6 boys and 6 girls. She is an excellent Mum and has passed that onto her daughters.

    Good luck.

  3. I have my semen stored with a vet in Sydney and form many yeas has been insured by the vets insurance company. Have just been advised they will no longer insure it. Does anybody know of a company who will insure frozen semen?

    Many thanks for any information.

  4. Thank you Lappiemum - yes agreed that is my only problem... I would in this case not know whether they reabsorbed or not as we never confirmed pregnancy in the first place.

This has been the first time I have ever carried out progesterone testing.. We tested 3 times, and 2 times, so I guess it would only estimate when ovulation would occur - but this was what was advised to me. We mated during all of which time the girls were receptive - so I can see this would not be a complete guarantee - but nevertheless in the past we left things pretty natural and never worried about progesterone tests and managed pretty well - funny how the more you interfer and worry the more unsuccessful you can be.

But anyway we will see how we go! I appreciate the feed back :)

do you have any other thoughts about why all of a sudden we are missing girls - someone mentioned the herpes virus which kind of scared me hence why I have come on here for more views?

    Hi Partipaws,

One of the reasons bitches not conceiving is thyroid problems. When I want to mate my girls every time I have their thyroid tested. If there is a problem easy to fix with tablets. I always do this a month before I want to mate my girls. Most of my litters are by frozen semen and I start progesterone testing from Day 2 (as soon as I see blood) and continue every second day until my vet says the time is right. Did this even for my last litter which was a natural mating. Lost a bitch line because I used to wait until Day 5 (which was recommneded by vet) and that girl was out by Day 5.

Also have a vaginal swab done just to make sure the bitch has no nasties.

    Good luck

  5. Thank you so much for the link to Dr. Jean Dodds. I sent her an email last night and she responded this morning with several suggestions which I have passed onto my vet so keeping my fingers crossed it will help in finding a solution.

By the way she was stunned that we vaccinated so early her recommendation for the first vaccination is 8.5 weeks

  6. I don't know, though I have heard of a possible link between polyvalent vaccines and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) that may be worth investigating

Given that the vaccine can afect the immune system it is always possible.

My suggestion would be to contact Dr Jean Dodds, one of the foremost authorities on vaccinosis and vaccine reactions.

You can contact her here: http://www.hemopet.org/contact.html

  7. Am wondering if anybody has experience with this disease.

I posted about my puppies having an adverse reaction to their vaccinations. We are struggling with the surviving boy who is now 16 weeks. He is at the vets at the moment and has been for the last week. The vet is at a loss as to what is wrong with him. He goes for a week fine no vomiting no diarrhea a perfectly normal puppy. The next week he is vomiting and has diarrhea. This is what has happened now at the vets everything fine until Monday and he vomited, today he has diarrhea.

A friend suggested Addisons so have mentioned to my vet and he is going to test him. His comment though is he has never seen it in a pup so young. Has anybody had this problem in a pup?

  8. Thank you everybody that has replied. Also I made a mistake in the date they were vaccinated in November.

Have had no problems on my bitch line and as far as I know the father's is clear. Fortunately all the pups are in lovely pet homes so will never be bred with. If the boy makes it he will remain with me. It has been a real learning curve although rather painful.

  9. The only real threat you have in Australia for young puppies is Parvo and you can buy a killed parvo vax and give that yourself. Then at 16 weeks go a live C3. There hasn't been any distemper in 29 years but generally most agree we should still give em a shot. Its probably an acceptable risk if you don't.Kennel cough is pretty useless in my opinion and I don't ever vaccinate for it.

If your puppies and not any others vaccinated with that batch or not all of your puppies reacted this way and are having a reaction you have to assume its an immune system issue in your pups and that needs to be noted and considered when anyone is deciding on a mating in future .It's info you need to share for other breeders to be aware of in the hope that they can breed puppies less likely in the future to have a bad reaction. Keep in the back of your mind that even though these puppies reacted this way which is something you could see that there may be things going on with the other's immune system which has shown its self yet so you need to keep good notes on this litter for years.

So if you are keeping a pup from that litter for breeding you need to ensure you choose one which has had no reaction what ever to the vaccine for a start. This is advice given to us from Jean Dodds when she was in Australia.

There are also some other things you may be able to learn from what has happened to try to head off anything similar again but you will need to take a long look at the bitch and her mother, her immunity, vaccination status, whether she was having heart worm meds, what worm meds etc ,diet of the puppies, your worming protocol and which drugs were used ,what other things they may have been exposed to, you need to look at the history of immune system issues in both parents, their parents and their siblings and relatives and a bunch of other things to try to spot anything that starts to tell a story if you want to take it to that length.

Some years ago I took a litter to the vet ,all were checked, temps taken etc before the Vax went in .As I was leaving one was gagging and I said to the vet "that puppy is being sick" Her response was a smile and "probably sick of being in the crate" By the time I got home 2 were dead - 40 min drive in air conditioned back seat. the other 6 were fine - never missed a beat. Anaphylaxis.

  10. Thanks for your reply, sandgrubber.

I am asking because I have a 13 month old bitch that hasn't come into season. This is late for my breed - most come in at 8-10 months. I would like to see if she comes in, but I am having doubts about breeding her as I don't want to breed a line of bitches that are late starters. (The bitch in question is daughter to a bitch that started at ~10 months.)

Thank-you to all who have voted. It seems that late starters are 'more hereditary' than the other minor-problems I mentioned. Food for thought.

  11. Hi Hilaryo,

To anybody who is going to vaccinate I would contact a homeopathic vet or person and get an immune booster. The 4 pups that were released I got my homeopathic lady to make up an immune booster which I sent to them. What it is Human Transfer factor capsules and Thuja drops. They were put on these a week before their second vaccination and they continued for 2 weeks after the vaccination. If I breed again this is what I will do with all of my pups.

To answer your question why I know it was the distemper portion is because my vet said so as did Camden University. Symptoms they are horrific. I truely believe that both girls died of distemper. For my pups it started with a rash in the ears then the pups became lethargic, progressed to neurological problems, diarrhea, pneumonia. I was either at the vet or the University nearly every day for weeks with these pups trying to save them. At Christmas because the Uni shut down and I was sick of all the chemicals I went the holistic way with my homeopathic lady and graduated to All Vets Natural for the homeopathic nosodes. By this time I only had Koopa (the boy).

A lot of people would say why did I not put them down. These were beautiful pups with temperaments to die for the best I have ever bred. I decided I needed to try and save them. They were not sick all the time it would come in waves and they were such sweet pups. The girls one I was going to keep she was stunning and the other girl was going to my grandchildren.

  12. Im so sorry for your loss.

Weimaraners can also have reactions to vacs.

Most breeders will only give C3 a vac at 6wks then another at 10wks or 12wks then nothing for 12mths.they dont need We suggest ONLY c3 for all our dogs/puppies anything more than a c3 isnt needed.

Thank you for your replies much appreciated. The vaccine I used is C3. Did you know that the distemper portion is "live". I did not I thought all 3 were dead.

What I am asking is if anyone knows if you can get in Australia the single vaccines. I know you cab get the parvo one but don't know about the other 2.

  13. Hi List,

My litter of 7 pups were vaccinated with Canvac 3 on the 19th December at 7-1/2 weeks of age. A week after the vaccination 3 of the pups developed a rash in their ears. Took to the vet and he said a reaction to the vaccine. I released 4 pups who had no problems with the full disclosure to all owners.

Well then the nightmare commenced for these 3 affected pups. The short story I lost the 2 girls and still waging the war with the little boy who is now 15 weeks old.

I was not aware when I asked for a "dead" vaccine that in actual fact the distemper portion of the vaccine which is a combo of 3 vaccines is "live". It seems the 3 pups had an adverse reaction to the distemper part.

Of course I have talked to many people and my question to my vet was if I breed again (who knows at this point in time) would I be able to give separate vaccinations with a week or more in between to not blast an immature immune system with the 3 combo. He said individual vaccines of the 3 where not available in Australia. I do know the parvo one is because the pup I am struggling with is waiting to have a dead parvo injection.

Would appreciate any input from other breeders. These are Rottweiler pups.

    Thanks

  14. Hi Gayle,

The answer is an electric fence. You just run a tape around the fencing and if the dog goes close it will get a zap. They soon learn to not go near the fence. You will probably only have to do this for a few months and your dog will forget about climbing the fence. I have a girl who would climb over a fence to get to another one of my old girls who she does not like. Well the electric fence soon fixed that. She has now forgotten about going over the fence. They are quite cheap to buy now.

    Good luck.

  15. We tried so many different things with my APBT and the only thing that stopped him getting out was a double sized dog run with a concrete base and a fully inclosed roof.

I would rather keep him in the house. He's very well behaved, doesn't chew or destroy anything and it would be a lot kinder than a run. It just seems such a shame to keep him in when we have an awesome yard for the dogs to play in.

  16. Thank you to those that have made suggestions much appreciated.

Last night I shredded some boiled chicken with a little bit of rice moistened with the chicken broth. Well the little tyke ate quite a bit sitting on my lap. Same again this morning. A little bit of progress which is great.

  17. Hi Guys,

It seems one of the labs doing DNA testing in Melbourne is unreliable with their results. Was discussing this lab and my dismay at their unprofessionalism with my vet. He mentioned that a client had a dog tested came back clear as was the mating partner but produced affected progeny which cannot happen. This was not an isolated icident.

Actually took advice from this list members and sent my DNA requirements to the USA. What a difference in dealing with them. Results back in 7 days as against 15 by the lab in Melbourne plus it was cheaper.

  18. Hi Guys,

Was hoping to get some tips. Have a little girl who is the bane of my life and I am at my wits end to know what to do. She will be 5 weeks on Monday. Was born a good size but had a bout of the runs (she was taken to the vets and put on rehydrating fluid 20ml every 2 hours) and then it began she would be half the size of her litter mates. She then would not suckle properly tried her on the bottle would not have a bar of it. Hated Biolac (was actually syringing it into her mouth) have been putting her with Mum first and on the back teats. The piggies are in last. Pups were started on solids (there are 8 of them) at 3 weeks using the Leerburg formula, beef mince and puppy kibble. Littlie wont eat it have been feeding her separately by putting food in her mouth which she promptly spits out. Have been putting Nutripet in her mouth which she will tolerate 3 times a day.

She is a spunky little thing and so pretty it breaks my heart. Took her back to the vet on Thursday and he fell in love with her said she is not ready to be weaned and to take Mum away (which I have done) and let her go until she is screaming for food. The thing is I really can't bring myself to do this have tried but she just goes to sleep.

Any suggestions would be great. Have never experienced this before have always had piggies vbg.

    Thanks

  19. thanks bilbo baggins and swayd

birth weight their was a 90gram+ difference between her and 3 of the other pups and a 50 g diff between her and her and 1 other girl (who is now my biggest girl, 2nd biggest pup)

i definately realise the smaller ones will gain less/not be as big as their siblings, she is petite. I just was more looking for suggestions in case we went backwards rather than forwards. Someone on here has kindly given some great advice via a PM and i think although i was aware of it i wasnt being diligent or strict enough (my fault), and this arvo she is looking fatter already.

Birth wt doubled was just under by 10 grams at day 10.

the 10% perday and double weight by 10 days is very helpful, as much as i have read or tried to read on every aspect i can i dont recall reading this....however as a weak excuse my fatigue is high so i think when i am reading things the last week I am missing important points *sigh*

    thanks

    :)

There you go she was all good.

Have a read of theses, not the one I read originally.

  20. Hi Guys,

I sent an enquiry to the CEO of DogsNSW see last post. I then wrote to Rob Harrison see his reply below. Have taken my address details out.

Interesting it still makes me worry.

    Regards,

    Sheila

    "Thank you for your email.

I would advise you that as long as the transaction is completed correctly between yourself as the breeder and the new owner of the dog then Dogs Queensland would not interfere in this matter.

    Subject: Advice regarding Limited Register

    Dear Mr. Harrison,

I am seeking your advice on how when I sell a puppy on Limited Register in NSW and the owner has signed a statutory declaration indicating that they are fully aware of the ramifications of the pup being on Limited Register that when the pup’s registration is transferred in Queensland that my wishes are up held and the pup remains on Limited Register?

It has come to my attention that an instance occurred where your Council upgraded a pup. I did pose this question to Christine Davies of Dogs NSW and she suggested that I contact your organization to get clarification. As I possibly have a litter due in October I would like to know what I should do. I only breed when I want something and the rest of the litter are all sold as pets.

    Your advice would be appreciated.

    Yours sincerely,

  21. I will be ordering some tests from this company. Genetic testing is so unreliable that I will not be sending any more tests to them. The other company mentioned using George here again unreliable from my experience.

A weeks turn around from the USA is excellent how did they arrive? Air mail or courier?

    Thanks for posting the link.

I've just used DDC Veterinary - ordered/paid for tests on line & kits arrived from the USA just over a week later. Saved a substantial amount in comparison to testing services offered in Australia and am so happy with the service and price have just ordered/paid for two more.

First batch was of 3 dogs & two tests each, second batch another two dogs and two tests each - for each dog the first test was $58 and the second test on the same dog only $20.00 - So a maximum of $78/dog.

  22. I had a litter of 6 boys and 6 girls in November. What I did was to put ribbons on all the girls and marked the boys with nail polish. I could see at a glance who the puppies were. Now I know you can get small newborn collars I will be going that way.

Beside the whelping box I had two plastic containers on wheels you can get them from the cheap warehouses. I put a piece of vet bed in each then a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and then another towel to drape over the top. As you always get piggies in a litter I took 6 puppies who were the bigger ones off the mother and put them in the first container then I bottle fed each pup when finished put in the second container. I sit on a milk crate while doing this good height. This way I knew where I was up to. Never completely filled each puppy. Once all 6 had been fed and the ones on the mother had fallen of the teats would return the 6 to Mother for her to top up and toilet etc. This way Mum was never stressed mind you she watched me like a hawk with her precious babies. I would feed 4 times a day. Mother was also being fed 4 times a day she is a food hog and loved it.

I always made sure the smaller ones had first go at the teats. This worked well for me. Must say ended up with a very even litter.

What I did find though when they got older the Mum would wait for me to clear a path for her to hop in the whelping box she was anxious about treading on one. I do not take my Mothers away they are with the pups of course with time out until the pups are ready to go to their new homes.

  23. Hi Kerry,

Thanks for that information mind you this girl weighs about 45 kilos so may be that is why price is high. Mind you the vets I use charge like wounded bulls but they are good in the repo area.

I will check with other vets or online to see if I can get it cheaper.

Did you have a blood test taken first before starting the tablets. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Regards,

    Sheila
