  1. Oh I am sure Aunty Dawn would love to have him... and im sure he would love to be spoilt by aunty dawn :mad

OK... have started NILF seems to be going ok... he walks up and automatically sits for pats now.. but when he does that i make him drop or stand stay or something first.. ;) is that right??

also took his toys out of the backyard and replaced with a kong that he gets when i go to work and i bring it in after i finish work.. then i have a game with his dumbell for a while and than i take that off him for bed times..

he is still sleepin inside tho

the pulling on the walks is still a prob.. to the extent of i get half way down the street, he doesnt listen, i go home again... hes too strong..

thought we had gotten out of his leash pulling :mad

but behaviour around the house has gotten better :mad

  2. Ali, dont be silly Honey my dramas are nothing compared to yours at the moment

He is 22 months old, entire has had a stud and is on the upper limits of size.. is also the only dog in the yard and i live on my own with just him..

he is basically lead pulling again ignoring my commands, has started chasing the flies and butterflies in the yard and will NOT come when i ask him to whilst he is chasing, he almost knocked me over numerous times on the weekend when i was at mum and dad's trying to get at their cats (he will usually still heel, but will watch them) and he didnt listen to me once whilst the cats were around...

dominance i think is the problem here.. something i thought we had sorted out.. but i also think there is some drive issues going on too

  3. OK I am ready to send Axel away for a few weeks for a break from him

he isnt listening at the moment.. usually he is a well behaved and obedient dog who does everythign i ask of him without a fuss..

but lately (last 3 or 4 days especially) he is not doing a thing i ask on the first instance, is even challenging at times..

its mainly when there is something there for him to chase...

we had heeling on lead, sits and stays and drops etc.. down pat, even under distraction..

thats all gone out the window now

    whats going on????

  4. i picked up 10kg box of carcasses for $10 at leanards... there were heaps in it!

the place i use to live near in Sydney use to sell me 30kg bags of kennel mince (chicken carcass, puppy mince, pet mince, bones etc all mushed) for $23.... was great!

now I get roo meat, lamb bones for nothin here  tis great living in the country

  5. Most of the people around here where im living now go roo shooting every night (roo's are a pest in this area, and there are 10000000's of them!)

they cut the legs and tails off the roo's they shoot and feed em to their dogs..

I asked about the worms too, and they said only time you gotta worry about worm is when its dry. Apparently when the area is nice and lush with plenty of vegetation the roo's arent infected by worms...

these guys have been doing this for years and years and all their dogs have never gotten sick by it..

  6. You say your neighbours dont like animnals?

any chance they could be popping something over the fence your unaware of???

its a little weird considering nothing has changed other than the neighbours, to have such severe symptoms.

only other things i can suggest it might be (hard without pics) would be have they swabbed for mange or mites?

and has the dog been getting wet and not dried off properly?? could be a type of wet dermatitis (?sp?)

  7. thanks for the kind words..

the house and yard just isnt the same without buddy running around all hypo, we miss his barks and excitement when we all come home from work and school

Axel is doing a bit better now, he actually got a little sick and had a visit to the vet on saturday night, was down in the dumps big time.. i broke down like a little child and i just couldnt handle it

big thanks to Riley for being there for me at such short notice to comfort me when i was saying all sorts of things like 'im gonna sell the dogs, cant deal with the heartache anymore etc..'

Axel is feelin much better now though, hes eating again (not in the yard though  ) and is a little bit more happier, still of a night he cries out a bit though.

its just such a hard time having to deal with my own loss and having to deal with Axel's loss as well, i have to be strong for him though.

    thanks for the support guys.

    Karen

  8. thanks guys, I am sure he will be giving all those GSDs some curry up there.. im beside myself, sitting here at my computer crying..

I feel sooooo bad i cant explain it, if only i didnt put Axel in his kennel last night, if only we brought buddy in to sleep inside.. I dont know it sucks

    and hearing Axel's cries.

he will get over it wont he? how long will he fret for?

  9. We fostered you 5.5 years ago till you found your forever home, however you were too loving and too cute to be rehomed so you stayed.

You loved to run around like a hypo maniac throughout our five acres, you would sleep with the cats but as soon as you saw one of us humans you would pretend to growl at the cat and she wouldnt even move cos she knew you were just bluffing!

tha day we brought Axel home you cocked your leg on dad's brand new full length wool jacket he was wearing and go into trouble for it.

You never stopped picking on Axel, growling and barking at him, sometime latching onto him. But he never minded always just laid down to be done, or put his paw on you when he had enough.

We knew you were getting old when you starting having trouble getting up from when you were asleep and when you started slowing down, not bouncing around like usual.

You were the best watch dog ever, always barked at every car that drove into the driveway and have been known to latch onto strangers pants that were in our house. You never bit anyone, just latched onto their clothes to let them know you were here.

You and Axel became great mates. often eating out of the same bowl and sharing bones.

We woke up this morning to find you on the back door step lifeless. A mess. Another dog managed to get into our yard, could have been a fox. and attacked you. You looked a mess I cant help but cry when i think of what you went through. If only Axel was out to protect you, ill never forgive myself for locking Axel away last night. He would have protected you till the end. :worship:

Your Angel wings were given to you, now use them wisely.

Axel has been crying all day, barking and calling out to you. hes in histerics. he has never had the yard to look after by himself.

We gave you a buriel where your favourite spot to sleep in the day was. There you will rest in peace my little man. You winter jacket still lays on your mat in the house where it was taken off you yesterday. No one can bare to put it away just yet.

RIP little man run free in rainbow bridge, The only comfort i have is knowing that the last 5.5 years of your life were the best any dog could want. You had a hard early life in and out of pounds and from house to house not really feeling loved or wanted until you came here.

We will miss you Buddy. Just remember Axel still loves you and hasnt forgotten you. :p

    :worship::worship:

Here is a picture of Buddy giving Axel heaps, like he loved to do

  10. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, WA, QLD, TAS are the states i have given them to base their itinery on, however they are only looking at coming to Aus for 4-5 weeks at most. which makes it hard when the seminars will be held over weekends. So depending on how many numbers in each state, 1 or 2 states will have to have their seminars mid week. The longer they stay here the more money it will cost to attend the seminars, its hard to try and please everyone with prices and places. Which unfortunatley means people miss out or travel with some seminars if they wish to attend.

the reason i say 'accredited trainers' is because that is what they said in their email about that seminar, however i will speak again with Aaron (CEO of KPCT) and ask him if there is a way of lifting that. I understand what you are saying about already being at a certain level with your clicker training and wanting to go to the advanced seminar.

Thanks espinay2, i will be in contact re; venue as i dont have a contact in any other states other than NSW. so i will need contacts in the other states..

I am going to contact DELTA and see if they can help with the organising in Melb..

There will be no profit made from the seminars (which will keep the cost of attending to a minimum) and if there ends up being money left over it will be donated to rescue orgs. I am not organising this for money, only for the knowledge!

all sounds good just a quick Q is it a classroom seminar (i assume so) or workshop with dog? just curious obviously more use with dog there but difficult to organise....

I am lead to believe it is more like a workshop, dogs included! (will clarify 100%)

Is she also coming to Brisbane?

the QLD one may be in Bris, depends on where i can get a venue.

Rescue orgs are invited to come along and organise a sausage sizzle or the like for lunch to raise funds at any of these seminars..

thanks for the input/questions guys.. will forward them on to Aaron..

    :) Karen

anyone have any other suggestions or comments??

costs have not been discussed yet and i should know mid to late July of costs, as soon as i know this i will do a basic advertisement and disseminate accordingly to see how many numbers i get.

    thanks

    Karen

  12. Would she come to Hobart?

Karen Pryor cannot attend, she said she will send 2 or possibly 3 (depending on numbers) of her faculties to hold the seminars.. sorry, i shhould have made it more clearer in my first post..

the trainers that will be comming work for Karen Pryor and often talk and train at seminars Karen holds...

the seminars will be in every state, the actual cities will depend on numbers

  13. once i get confirmation on a few things from Karen Pryor it will be advertised on the internet, through certain dog training clubs, and rescue orgs (am looking into trying to possibly absorb the costs of the seminar for rescue organisations to come) and the canine journal.. posters and flyers are another possibilty..'

there will be seminars in each state...

I have asked for one seminar to be put aside for clicker training in the ring (for showdogs/breeders), and one for accredited dog trainers here.

  14. Hi guys, this post is to see if i can get the numbers together for a Karen Pryor Clicker training seminar here in Australia..

IF i can get the numbers together they are willing to send two (possibly 3) clicker training faculties from USA to Australia and hold a number of seminars (depending on numbers) around Australia..

    the seminars may include;

    An overview of clicker training

    Maximizing the power of rewards

Introduction to foundation skills, such as:

    Attention and basic obedience cues

    Leave it

    Go settle on a mat

    Loose leash walking

Polishing behaviors to a fluent level

    Adding distractions, duration, and distance

Build on foundation skills with fun tricks, such as:

    Touch

    Take a bow

    Hide your nose

    Back up

    Cross your paws

    Find the treat

    Crawl

A variety of advanced tricks will be covered, including skills centered on carrying objects:

Cleaning up toys or throwing away garbage

    Carrying objects to another person

Games like ring toss or horse shoes

    Limp and leg-lift

Two-dog tricks, including the “biscuit toss”

Turning lights on/off (various approaches and equipment)

Scent discrimination (human and other scents)

Games for teaching the basics of Search & Rescue

    Tricks that incorporate props

    Topics include:

Lateral thinking/analyzing difficult skills and finding a variety of training solutions

Behavior chains, and breaking up skills into small steps

Working at a distance from your dog

    Fluency

    Tricks for TV/film/print work

How to use tricks to solve behavioral problems

    Using tricks in your classes

Click to Calm : Healing the Aggressive Dog workshop.

this is just a breif overview of the types of things that will be covered in seminars, however they may change seminars to suit..

The costs are not finalised, and we will try and keep the prices as low as possible depending on numbers, clickers, books and training videos and other merchandise will be available at seminars as well..

they will be hands on and people are asked to bring their dogs..

I do not know when or what time of the year the seminars will be either..

if i can get a rough idea of numbers so i can get back to Karen Pryor with numbers and things can get finalised from there..

    thanks

    Karen

  15. Rubbish! Certainly increasing leadership can help dogs with separation related behaviours but it should be part of a treatment plan, not THE treatment plan. Separation anxiety is a far more complex issue than 'your dog thinks it is the leader.'

Haven, there are ways of DISCUSSING training techniques and there are ways of being rude.

    that was rude.

I like coming on here and learning, not seeing people be rude to other people. everyone has their own ideas and own ways of training that work for each INDIVIDUAL dog, yes dogs are individuals.. and by coming on here people get different training ideas and get to use what works for them...there is no need to try and shoot peoples training methods and ideas down and be rude about it. If you dont agree, then say something constructive.. not RUBBISH!

    anyway my 2 cents.

  16. a friend of mine had that trouble with her GSD bitch.

She ended up putting her food out, if Kody didnt eat it within 5 minutes, she would go out, pick it up and throw it out.

The next night, the same thing.

Eventually Kody realised that she either eats whats given to her when its given, or she goes without.

Only took 2 days (she would nibble at it then leave it, so she was getting some food) by the 3rd day, she ate the whole lot and she hasnt had a prob with her eating since.

I dont know if this is what i would do with my dog, i would speak to a vet and ask what the effects are of this. (however some may argue, if the dog was hungry it would eat it, therefore it is not effecting the dog at all.)

    BUt i know it worked.

Try mixing good quality kibble (i use pro plan), some puppy mince, and livamol together with some warm water... (livamol will enhance the taste of the food)..not too much, and see how he goes with that?

what are you feeding him now??

    good luck :)
