I have one dog with Medibank and the other with Pet Plan. Medibank have paid out over $10K promptly (for Max for mostly emergency intensive care and follow ups afterwards) and apart from a small stuff up everything was done easily and quickly - most payments were paid via EFT within 10 days of submitting paperwork. Pet Plan on the other hand kept trying to tell me that Remy had an ear infection (never had one in his life). They told me the claim (for eating something he shouldn't have) was being processed when in fact it was on the way back to me because I hadn't filled in some small area on their very complicated form. The processing time seems to reset when the form is resubmitted, so it will be something like 6-8 weeks easy, before I see any money from them. That is IF they pay it because although they have had the claim for 3 weeks on the second attempt, they still can't tell me if it is actually approved or not. Oh, and they only pay by cheque so with my unreliable service from Australia Post there is a good chance the cheque will go astray as well! The upshot is I won't be renewing with Pet Plan. The bureaucracy is unbelievable and they don't trust your vet or their knowledge.

One thing to factor in Mumscats is that if you have any other dogs that are over the age of 8 years old alot of insurers will not cover a dog that old I'm a bit confused If you have continued insurance cover for your puppy/3yo/5yo/or from 7yo... Does his coverage stop at 8yo? Or do they not insure dogs only if you apply when he is older than 8 years old?? Thanks in advance :) They generally don't insure dogs older than 8 years if you are applying for the first time. They generally reduce coverage for dogs after their 8th birthday even if they have been insured the whole time. It pays to read the fine print very carefully!

I'm so sorry that you have lost your beautiful boy. We had something similar with our miniature schnauzer Max. He went from normal but quiet at 9 am to deathly ill 3 hours later. Antibiotics and fluids weren't enough. He owes his life to a plasma transfusion. We still don't know the exact cause.

There are different brands of BARF with quite different textures. There's one that I think the Guide Dogs use (can't remember the name - Canine Country????) that has different formulas based on age. It apparently has a more attractive texture than Dr B's. It might be a better fit for Indy?

If you use too much you will make it worse. It's the same with people and cortisone. Instructions are usually to use it sparingly other wise you end up in a vicious cycle. Large amounts of cortisone cream can affect the body's natural levels which makes the itch itchier and you then need more cortisone cream to tame it (if that makes sense?). Keeping her cool may help - ice in a towel on the itchy part perhaps?

In one of the patties in my last box of kangaroo BARF I found a chunk of metal, possibly a broken bit of meat grinder like the end of a drill bit.. I gave it to the shop where I bought it to chase it up..... But yes, the patties were full of blood and I had to mix them together with a fork to make them more "appealing" after defrosting. Due to other circumstances (sick dog recovering from liver infection - nothing to do with BARF - something else he ate ) I won't be feeding raw in the near future but I have to say I am reticient to consider BigDog now.

You just ask them. It's usually just a printout from their computer system, not a special report.

The pill forms are Capstar and Comfortis. Capstar is a pill that kills fleas for up to 24 hours after taking it. Comfortis is similar but lasts for a month. If your dog has an allergy to fleas Comfortis will help in the long term, Capstar in the short term ... with the fleas. They won't help with the allergy side of it. You may need to talk to your vet about some antihistamines to help him over it. In the past I found Frontline to be next to useless. I was told by my vet that some fleas have become resistant to it and to alternate it with the other brand (Advantage?) but I prefer Comfortis - no sticky fingers!

Fang, I had similar symptoms with my old boy Luigi. He was 12 when he first started drinking heaps of water and having accidents overnight, gradually getting worse. Multiple blood and urine tests all came back normal. The vet thought is was diabetes but it wasn't. He then thought it was bladder cancer. But it wasn't. We tried propalin (sp) and it seemed to work and then it didn't. We finally ended up at a Vet Specialist. It turned out that Luigi had a tumour on the adrenal gland (his left adrenal was 4 times larger than his right one). This was diagnosed by ultrasound because none of his blood or urine samples were ever abnormal. The worst that they were was a little bit on the dilute side of normal. The water drinking compensated for the effect of the tumour but made him pee more which led to accidents when he was asleep. The tumour produced adrenaline in spikes so the levels were never constantly elevated and as a result his drinking was not constant. The specialist commented that a lot of animals that have this sort of tumour eventually die of stroke - the sudden rise in adrenaline causes the blood pressure to spike. It was a major operation to remove the tumour but Luigi had a good life until he was almost 16 when old age caught up with him.

Ditto but with side effects - it was excellent for reducing pain but the longer I took it the more pronounced the side effects were for me. X 2 for the vet

Wouldn't depend on why the leg was amputated? Mangled leg from an accident, you would take off less than with say cancer where you need to make good margins?
