  1. hey, thought i might post this for the sammy ppl. iv just noticed that my 2yr old girls nose has gone from black to a brown/pink tinge.... ive googled it but not really sure what to do about it as my male sibe has a large pink stripe down his nose at the age of 4 so i though it was an age thing.. im obviously wrong.

    advice appreciated

  2. thanks for your relies, i have been told about the force 2 from pupkus and it is also fairly well priced. has any one used or know about that particular dryer?

i have seen many aelous dryers on ebay but not too keen with the cost in freight to get one to me.

the liberty is the only one i have used so far and it takes over 2hours to dry my sammie (probably because it is fairly old) and i think they have a little less power than the aelous and pupkus ones.

its annoying me how i just cant decide which one to get. i want to try them all out

  3. hey guys, i know it should be in the grooming forum but since i want to aim it at sammie owners im posting it here.

i need to buy a dryer and am stuck which one to buy. i didnt know anything about untill reading in forums that moat ppl have 2 dryers one for normal drying and the other for getting them fluffy etc.

im just after a high powered one preferably one on a stand.

if you could let me know what you guys are using would be much appreciated :noidea:

    thanks

  4. hey,

i have a 4 yr old husky male, which i brought from melb being told he was 2 1/2.

he is a beautiful male which i show but he talks so much. iv had him for 4 months now and my female samoyed is in heat. unfortunately i dont have a dog run so i keep my bitch inside. he constantly howls and whines when i take her away from him even when shes not in heat (but its worse when shes in heat).

iv tried everything to calm him down but he continues to howl and the neighbours get very mad.

is their any thing i can try to make him more dependant, as my samoyed was as happy as anything being alone. he also cant be tied up and left alone as he continually barks and whines.

    any ideas is much appreciated.

also he is an extremly slow eater and is very picky and underweight. i have him on eaglepak and have found that he will eat pasta mixed with raw mince and vegies, but raw mince is so expensive just for a dog. he wont eat bones unless my samoyed is with him and hasnt eaten a great deal since shes in heat any other suggestions?

    thanks

    Hi Ruski,

Have you spoken to the dogs breeder? Have they been able to give you any advice?

If the dog has always had the company of other dogs, then unfortuantly i don't think you are going to be able to resolve this issue. Siberians are pack animals, and many of them always need either human or canine company.

They get very lonely on their own.

Why does he need to be seperated from his canine companion? If she is in heat, just ensue that one of them is crated and they are under supervision.

As for the food - bones won't put weight on him, so i wouldn't worry about him eating them. Have you tried chiken mince? That isn't too expensive. Our dogs get eagle pack (1 cup) plus chicken mince (large handful) and that is enough to keep them in condition. Or you can tried tined tuna/sardines mixed with dry food.

No unusual for your dogs appetitite to decrease while your bitch is in heat - he's pining for her.

These are all questions your breeder should be able to answer.

Where did you get your boy from?

    Regards,

    Sophia

    Snofall Siberians

    hi sophia,

its a very long story about why and how we got our boy.

he is from lihuk kennels in melb and was sold to another breeder who sold him to a person that was buying a bitch from one of his litters.

that same litter happen to be a boy that i got from them but passed away. i was told about the dad was for sale and was told he was 2 1/2 yrs old.

got him flown to WA and realised his papers said he was 4. since then i have contacted the ppl who sold him to me and they have contacted me since i went off after they told me that they didnt realise he was 4 not 2 1/2 (so i only paid half for him $350)

so i have a personal attachment to him since he is the father of my dead puppy and looks so alike.

my bitch is in heat and because i work allday i cant supervise her in a crate.

as far as i was told he has been a kennel dog most of his life so i doubt he was ever left alone.

i will try chicken mince, iv tried tuna but it makes all his biscuits soggy and wont eat them, are they allowed to have sardines, given that they have bones?

how many times do ur sibes eat a day and what type of eagle pak are they on?

i have the anchovy one i think.

    thanks

    chelsea

  5. hahaa thanks golden,

roo meat is too rich for both my dogs and they just spew it up :)

i will just keep trying different brands of tinfood any hopefully find a winner.

unfortunately its not my house and the dogs arent even allowed inside, but if it stops his howling thats just what will have to happen.

    thanks for your help :)

  6. an alternative meat that i can try and put him on that probably has better nutrition than just mince.

Lamb flaps, turkey wings/necks, pork offcuts ? They may be worth trying?

What was he being fed when you got him? perhaps he has never been shown other foods much?

thanks perse, iv tried lamb flaps and soon as u give it to him he buries it straight away. i didnt know you could feed dogs turkey bits, will try them.

i was told he was on royal canin from the person who sold him to me , but they said thats because the breeder told them thats what he was eating. they said he wouldnt eat royal canin for them and they put him on a premium brand of biscuits (cant remember the name) that were from america and were the same as eagle pak which i have him on.

  7. thanks, i had my bitch inside which he could see from outside but kept me up howling from 3 till 6 this morning. i had to keep him in my bedroom last night just so i could get some sleep and amazingly he didnt winge.

    thanks

Well there's the answer to your first question (and it makes me think he's howling for a different reason rather than because your bitch is on heat, eg being separated from his pack maybe? )

i only feed my animals the best and its not that i cant afford mince, he could eat over 1kg of mince just on his own in one day which is getting expensive at over $15 per kg. i was looking for an alternative meat that i can try and put him on that probably has better nutrition than just mince. im abit worried that mince isnt best for helping him put on weight as i dont know any one else who feeds their dog raw mince.

    thanks

Depends on where you live but there are places in Perth that do pet mince for between $2 per kilo to around $5 per kilo.

I'd like to feed human grade beef mince to my dog all the time too but it's too expensive. He gets it as a treat occasionally, otjerwise it's raw chicken frames, meaty bones etc.

hmmm, thats a good point. when we got him i had him for a week or so and had to take my bitch away and he constantly howled. iv found he doesnt like being left alone. if it is because hes been separated from his pack how can i calm him down without having to get another dog? (preferably one thats fixed)

i live in geraldton, i have tried all the butchers for their pet mince but he just sniffs it and turns up his nose, even if i leave it their and not give into his fussy eating. thats why iv found he will happily eat human mince (still at his very slow eating pace). i also give chicken frames and meaty bones but he wont eat them unless my girl is outside with him, and because hes such a slow eater she tries to steal his and he just lets her.

thanks golden (do you breed golden retrievers by any chance?)

  11. Hi Everyone,

Samoyeds are a breed of dog that really interest me. CUrrently I'm in no position to add to the furpack but in the future I will be so you never know could end up with a Sammie.

I've heard a few people mention that they are rather independent, but what is their recalls like? I know that a great recall is a byproduct of great training but there are definately some breeds out there who are much better at it than others.

    Thanks

    Hi Kiesha

I am really amazed at how good Bundys recall but then again I do have Sibes too

I just have to yell Bund come, and he stops dead in his tracks and bounds over to me  whereas the Sibe will just give you the finger :rofl: But yes I have definately spent alot of time with him making sure he has a solid recall, maybe it is the novelty factor of actually having a dog that responds to 'come' Would I ever let him off leash to go for a walk, never but that is just me, probably another symptom of having Sibes.

    agreed with kiesha

my sammie has taken a year to answer to "come" even though i never even taught or used the word come till now. she also responds very well to a loud whistle (even though i cant whistle)

but she has her moments just like any dog where she will ignore me untill shes finished sniffing or chasing something.

i also have a sibe- who never listens unless hes in the house or backyard

i can be walking him on the lead and call his name and he wont even acknolege it. (mind u we got him at age 4 and have only had him for 4months now)

i have done obiedience and show training with my sammie and she not once laid down for me. i stopped obeidience training for now and all of a sudden now she lays when i ask her.

but the best thing of all is that i can tie her up or put her in a crate ANYWHERE and she doesnt make a sound or whine or bark, she simply lays down watches things or just falls asleep. and most of all she loves me to pieces and tries to please me all the time and definately knows when shes done wrong

  12. HEY GUYS,

since im after a blow dryer for my sammie, does anyone have any suggestions on which brand would be best. i was after one on a stand and that has a heat function.

    thanks in advance

Ruski, your Sammie is so cute! Looks like a polar bear in that photo.

    thanks kero,

ur sammie looks cute as too

  13. I only just today picked up a Liberty Ultra Lite (I think thats the brand name) dryer and can't wait to use it! (how sad am I  )

But I have been told good things about this brand.

One thing I will say it be careful with heat.

The Sammie coat is delicate and continued exposure to heat can make the coat dry and brittle, it can even go yellow in some cases.

What you want is something very strong that will just blast the water right off the coat. :(

Oh and your Sammie is very cute.

thanks wolfsong. the breeder i got her from only recommends liberty. i just dot want to spend 700 bucks if im not going to be happy with it.

    thanks

  14. hi guys, i need your help.

my friend has a sheltie which is very matted all over and has been like that for 2 months now. unfortunately she doesnt live in my town or i would kick her up the backside for letting it get that bad (as i myself own a samoyed and husky).

im not familiar too much with the sheltie coat and can any one offer suggestion on how to go about dematting it and the kinds of shampoos and conditioners that is best used.

iv strongly advised my friend not to shave only because ive been told never to shave my sammie, im hoping this breed isnt meant to be shaved either (however this sheltie isnt a show dog )

    thanks

  16. hey guys, just a reminder since ur all in WA.

just because summer is over please still be aware of the deadly sea slugs. especially when ur dog is sniffing at the seaweed.

i know too well after loosing my 5month husky.

    R.I.P duke

Oh gosh so sorry for your loss! :) I haven't heard of them, perhaps I need to do my research. Thanks for the reminder. Your pup was beautiful :D

thanks ruby star. its worth looking up, they are only mainly in WA during summer. they are so toxic that vets have had dogs of all ages dying from a simple sniff, lick or digestion.

they smell very attractive to dogs. in my case he ate it and at the time it must have been very old because it just looked like seaweed. not knowing what it was at the time it wasnt untill 30mins later his eyes were trembling profusly and convusing. it have taken over his nervous system and wasnt able to function with the amount of shaking.

despite all the vets efforts of hours trying to beat it he passed away. thats when the vets told us he never really stood a chance and even if he didnt eat it he most likely wouldnt have made it.
