  1. This thread disappoints me! Ive always wanted floorboards when I finally get my own place, I love the look. But hearing that they can get scratched so easily I think I'll stick with tiles/carpet.

I'd always wanted wooden floors too, until I got them. Now that we've moved I'm so stoked with having tiles and carpet!!

  2. There is no actual Akita rescue, but there is the Arctic Breed Rescue which deal with Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds and Akitas. They are based in NSW and Qld, but I know they also deal with quite a few dogs interstate, so they may very well be able to help.

+0403 833 204 Anna or +0403 960 893 Marnie (Anna is probably the better contact in this case as Marnie is based in Qld).

There are only two (registered) breeders in ACT (Well, there's a third one but they're very new) and these are where myself and the other regular Akita owner on this forum got our two boys from, so if they've come from one of these kennels we can probably help identify them.

If there's any way I can help please let me know.

  3. Ah yea, I remember Kyojin used to wake up at the crack of dawn too. Very annoying because after they're up, all they want to do is play!

Sounds like she's settling in pretty well already though! That's really good. Yea, that's understandable. It's a lot going on for you at once so it can be a bit overwhelming!

  4. How exciting!! :D

It was kinda weird, I was so excited I've been wanting this puppy for so long and then when we got her home I got this sudden massive panic attack... I have no idea why I guess I was just so excited I got overwhelmed.. weird. ah well!

While we were waiting we saw the BIGGEST cutest squishyest Akita puppy.... so adorable!!

Oh no! Hope you're able to relax a bit more now. It is such an exciting time. How did your first night go with her?? Oooh I'm jealous!! I don't get to see any other Akitas here except my own

Dora is absolutely gorgeous! Such a cute face, and those paws!!

  5. I've heard arguments saying it's good for them, and arguments saying it's toxic. Kyojin has had it before in very small amounts of left overs, but I don't feed it to him. I think I'd prefer to be cautious and just not specifically give it to him.

  6. I'm assuming you mean the ones they posted on their Facebook page today. I have the collar and leash set in black which I bought for Kyojin's birthday 12 months ago. He wears it every day and it still looks great. I've been very happy with the quality of it. I know some others here have had theirs longer than mine, so hopefully they'll be able to tell you how they're going.

  7. I have a friend with a large breed and having lost a couple of dogs to bloat , she now chooses to tack the stomach as a preventative measure. Is this normal in prone breeds?

I had never heard of this procedure until an Akita Facebook group. It seems it's becoming quite common for Akita owners (and I presume many other breeds where bloat may be more of a risk) to get the dogs stomach tacked while already under anesthetic for desexing. I thought this was really interesting and will look into it next time I get a dog.

It is called a gastropexy - Dogs can still bloat, but not torsion.

The tacking can also come undone over time.

Thank you for that Sway. I'll have to do some research on it. Very worrying that there isn't any real way of preventing it :(

  9. That's spot on with what I paid for each of Kyojin's courses, but they were all through a private organisation. They run specific courses mostly, rather than say general obedience. Clubs usually charge a small yearly membership fee and then something like $5 each week when you come.

  10. I feed my Pointer on a raised level. Should I not do that? He is never taken out within an hour of eating and I never go outside and play within an hour. They all get excited when I go outside but if I'm inside, they all stand and look in the window.

I've read that elevated food bowls are worse, but then I've seen elevated bowls specifically advertising that they are better for reducing bloat so I'm a bit confused. I decided I felt better not using one, but I really don't know what the right answer is.
