  1. MBRC will check properties and are not very flexible if your block is under size, if the block is "big enough" under their criteria (which is purely based on land size) they are pretty good as far as issuing additional permits goes, as long as you have had no complaints. If you get caught with an additional dog/cat and no permit they will make you remove any animals over and above your permit. They do check randomly and there seems to be a lot of "dobbers" . That said I am aware of multiple people even in my street who are flouting the permit law and have over the numbers. The fee for an additional dog permit is not refundable if you apply and are refused - the employees in the call centre are quite helpful though, they were very clear we would not get a third dog permit and suggested not wasting the application fee. They were happy to put me through to a warden and then someone higher up the chain to discuss but it was no go. They were amused, but not swayed by my argument that the reality of having an additional Shar Pei would mean I need more couch space than more square metres of land, my guys don't self exercise and all walking is done off the property, but that's the rules........ They have a calculator here: MBRC Checker
  2. Also some vets are super tactless, even good ones. My local vet once asked a friend of mine why they were bothering to vaccinate their 15 year old dog, as he did not think she had another three years to go. He caught sight of their faces and started back pedalling like mad, same guy rolled his eyes and said "Oh great a Shar Pei " When I took Issy to him, I had to stay because it was urgent but never, ever went back. Lots of people rave about him though and I know he is really highly thought of and generally considered a very good vet. I suspect he sometimes thinks out loud............. Edited to add I hope Danny is ok DDD, he has had a rough trot.
  3. Sorry to hear he is having a set back. Please give him a gentle pat from me DDD. Did the vet have any useful suggestions?
  4. Lovely tribute to your beautiful boy, gorgeous photos. RIP Indy.
  5. I sent a PM to the owner of the site she appeared on DDD, and let a couple of Rescue bods round here I still speak to know. I thought she had gone back to NSW but apparently not.
  6. Happy Birthday Herbert, glad you had a wonderful day.
  7. How do you stay calm Sarsaparilla, I would like any tips! My girl has been attacked twice now by aggressive off leash dogs , the second time she was extremely badly injured - to the point where the vet was of the opinion had she been another breed she would in all likelihood not have survived. I found it impossible to remain calm when my dog was pinned to the ground by the throat by a larger dog, whilst it's mate took chunks out of her side and back. I yelled and kicked as hard as possible to get them off even though I know people say to stay calm, I just lost it and was in a red rage. It didn't cross my mind that the attacking dogs might bite me until much later, you just do what you can at the time. I am lucky my girl is not reactive. She is rather more wary with the type of dog that attacked her. I don't think a calmer reaction would have changed much in my case - but I think the overreaction gave me the strength to boot the offenders hard enough to make them let go. I have a very bad knee, if you had asked me prior to the attack, I would have said I could not kick anything hard physically nor would I have the necessary meanness to really boot a dog, well that changed in the split second they pinned my dog. I am not happy that I did it, but would again in a heartbeat and now walk with a pole for the express purpose of defending myself and my dogs if I need to. Sad, but necessary round here now.I do try and stay calm if a dog rushes us with obviously friendly intent even though she is understandably not keen, I am trying not to transmit my nervousness. I sent photos of her injuries and the vet report to the Council, tracked down the owner eventually and got her to pay the very large vet bill for my dog's surgery- I have not seen her with the dogs off leash again since, but no action was taken against her. Apparently not enough independent eye witnesses.
  8. What a lovely update, great to hear she is going so well.
  9. Just bumping this as Narelle Holloway Hiley has popped up in Redbank Qld this week - please let any Rescue friends you might have in that area know about her history.
  10. So pleased to see your update DDD, good on you for giving them honest feedback on the issues too.Sounds like everyone is a teeny bit better, you might manage without the forgotten tramadol! Hope it continues to improve.
  11. Hoping all goes well tomorrow, he could be picking up on your stress too if he is very close to you. Hope Gussy is soon on the mend too, they sure pick their times. I remember when Issy had her big hip surgery, the day after, Alf ripped his claw right out and was bleeding horribly and squealing like he was being murdered. I had to bundle him off to the ER and was a nervous wreck then trying to nurse them both. It was a bit like man flu though - barely a peep out of Issy who had just had the top of her leg bone removed, but Alf the big boofy bloke cried for days over his nail and whinged incessantly. I was tempted to take Issy's tramdol. Will be thinking of you all tomorrow.
  12. Great to read he is holding his own! Hope your experience with SASH gets better and it was just a hiccup, last thing you need when you are trying to focus on Danny.
  13. Just popping in to say we are keeping Danny (and you) in our thoughts.
  14. I hope so too, it is horrible when they are struggling and you know you can only wait. All fingers toes and paws crossed that it is the hangover - I hope you get some rest too.
  15. Sending you both good wishes, and some gentle healing noseboofs from my two. I hope Danny is on the up soon.
  16. That's shocking OsoSwift, do they just not answer the phone? I take their name and ask for their email so I can go back to the same person - if they don't respond I copy the general email as well in my next response , asking for a reply from a supervisor. I have only had the issue once, and once the please get your supervisor to contact me went through, they called and apologised. They have been responsive since. So bloody aggravating when they won't respond.
  17. This is the list of Petplan Australia's "Select" breeds - the breeds they charge higher premiums for: Bandog, Bavarian Mountain Hound, Bergamasco Shepherd Dog, Briard, Blood Hound, Boerboel, Beauceron, BerneseMountain Dog, Bracco, All Bulldogs (i.e. English, American, Australian, Miniature, etc.), Bull Arab, Deerhound, Dogue deBordeaux, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, Estrela Mountain Dog, Grand Blue De Gascoigne, Great Dane, Greater Swiss MountainDog, Hamiltonstovare, Hungarian Kuvasz, Irish Wolfhound, Komondor, Maremma Sheepdog, Leonberger, All Mastiff Breeds,Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Rottweiler, Russian Black Terrier, SharPei, St Bernard or any crosses of these breeds. I gave up trying to find the Petplan UK list it was either too well hidden or not there. I also got very annoyed by the drop down breed picker on the quote page - judging by some of the completely laughable names there must be a lot more DDs springing up. I have what is deemed a select breed - Shar Pei, the premiums have gone up again this year and we are now paying $1,310.00 per dog, per year. That said I have also just received a check for close to $3,000.00 for Issy's recent MCT treatment. Cheque arrived less than two weeks after claim was submitted, no questions asked. I did query the cost for select breeds last year - I called and asked to speak to someone other than the direct call centre - someone called me back and their explanation was that whilst select breeds make up a tiny (I can't recall the % but it was less than 10) proportion of the dogs they insure, they account for over 80% of the claims. It might have just been sales patter of course, but it did give me something to think about. For me Petplan have been value for money and the service good over the years - minor hiccup earlier this year when they seemed to have an admin meltdown. Still wish I had paid the premiums for "nothing" though as it would mean Issy was sound and well!
  18. I agree, there are always idiots there with uncontrolled, off lead dogs. Interesting to see Brighton on the list as well. We are not far from there and have stopped going to the beach front as there were so many off lead it was a nightmare. I might have a (dog less) stroll this weekend to see if it is any better, it would be great to walk there again.
  19. Pretty sure we will be the same H, we went yesterday - no chemo or radium. Another wound check next week and then monthly check ups for the next six months to do bloods and check her skin and that joint in particular for recurrence. So relieved and grateful.
  20. I think I need a fentanyl patch myself. Fell off the back deck trying to make sure she didn't jar her paw getting down, thank goodness for colour bond fences, what a sight I would have been lying in a muddy puddle - her dressing comes off tomorrow afternoon so I should be able to see how big her wound is.
  21. How terrifying, hope you are all recovering and Bunter is home soon.
  22. We had great news this evening, the specialist called with her lab results - and the tumour is very low grade, even more surprisingly they have now said they think they got it all. Definitely no chemo, maybe no radium either. She goes back on Friday for patch removal and a dressing change so we will know next steps for sure then. We will just have to watch her very closely from here on and test any lumps. We are just so relieved. I have visions of her being carted to the vet for every future mozzie bite though. Still talking to the herbalist though to see what they suggest.
