  1. Hi + welcome If you search on this forum you will find many many threads and posts on blackhawk. It used to be great in my opinion, we used to use it. Manufacturing and ingredients changed, it is not as good. Have a read about raw feeding and where their theories come from - it provides a basis for wanting to feed more natural and why. Kibbles to consider: ivory coat, meals for mutts, ziwipeak. I am sure others will have other suggestions too.
  2. Hey @Christina77 How are you getting on with your girl? gentle massage and movement during quiet time is also great. As is using a gentle massage egg (or the base end of an electric toothbrush) on the back paw pads to get nerves firing and talking to the spine is something we did. Building the muscles by swimming (aided with a life vest) was also very helpful for overall health - swimming was one of her favourite things and the life vest meant she could do it long enough with enjoyment withuot struggling and no longer enjoying it.
  3. How are you going with the crate training? I remember when I first read about the concept, I used K9pro's free document to train my then 7 or 8yo dog with success - a great read whatever stage of crate training you're at I think.
  4. Go see a trainer. If you don't know how to use these items properly, based on how your dog is responding to them, you're more than likely doing more damage than good with any time you have found to invest in the training, because you're likely going to have to do some untraining to get it done the right way. You can ask questions on a forum and you tube away the many different methods, but none of them can see what or how you're doing things nor how your dog is reacting. Investing a little in a trainer in the beginning means you'll spend a LOT less later. The older they are the more of a handful (or a nightmare) it likely can be, and without a doubt, more work.
  5. Hi Frizbee What's the ethical dilemma? Is the alternative PTS? (Apologies if the alternate is meant to be clear and I haven't got it). At 6yrs old, there is likely still plenty of life loving dogness to be lived. 6 weeks out of another 5+yrs is a drop in the ocean. Some great advice to be learnt here from many dog owners who have been through cruciate surgery from their dogs. My last dog had it done at almost 10yrs old. Much less than half the responses from people who gave advice had said their dog needed the other one done. Also, on a decent diet, good care and luck, she did not get arthritis - our vet surgeon was very happy about that. So from the dog perspective, there is plenty of life, and if there is only a chance of the other one going, there is the same if not more of a chance it won't go. And arthritis is only a possibility. Accidents with dogs are always a possibility too. I think you are overwhelmed by the cost, and thinking too far ahead of yourself - think of the now, and the better quality of life to be had after the surgery. The various procedures are quite commonly done and done well now, and there is a lot of advice in plenty of old threads (and others who will come in and provide tips here) to be soaked up. It is definitely a shock to the system how much it costs, but in hindsight, not only do I think it was the best decision ever for me and my dog, I don't know anyone else who has done it and thought never again.
  6. Hmm I think we need descriptions of H's behaviours as well, he might have more issues than your dog. How does he greet him how does he interact with the dog? Does the dog have behavioural issues with any other humans? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. What are you currently doing and what are the specific training concerns with your dog and your lifestyle that you're after? You've asked about Barkbusters, Hanrob, and generically trainers in general. You have had a trainer come to your place but it definitely sounds like they didn't gel with you. Did you call them back and ask questions? Have you had them back since the initial consult? The responses to Hanrob sound lukewarm. If you're out of your depth and need a board and train package, they're not the only ones that do it - k9pro who many here have recommended (with no affiliation), myself included - also have that package. An initial consult will tell you if that's what you actually need and they'll be realistic with telling you exactly how much time and effort you need to put in, IME they won't sugarcoat and overpromise. Frankly I think you need to be on the phone talking to the recommendations provided and talk to them about what works for you - you could go with the easiest options or the closest but frankly you're better off saving time and money and going with what will work.
  8. Take note of what you're currently doing - how you feel and react when these things are happening - this could help your behaviourist. Also, take what advice you receive here as research, but the behaviourist who will meet you both in person is best equipped to give you the right advice. When you get new advice, don't try to do all of them, do the one or two things that work together and do them consistently well.
  9. Just saw this post! This is who we used and will keep on using
  10. Hi I live in inner Sydney and have travelled to K9 Pro headquarters for their training program. We did a lot of research over a long period of time prior to getting our pup, and the fact that it's personalised is what makes the biggest difference - You could have the best trainers in the world but finding someone who can speak your language so that you can understand it as best as possible for what you want to achieve beats course after course hands down. I would suggest having a good think and writing down your training goals and definition of 'extremely well trained' and going from there. I think everyone has a different definition of what that is! I sent neighbours (who had used bark busters) to K9Pro and now they're recommending them to everyone who has noticed the change in their dog's behaviour. Good luck!
  11. How is she compared to other dogs, friends dogs etc, - just want to rule out worrying too much and her relying on you to catch her / watch out for her all the time? (ie. she has developed a behaviour of reliance on you to this level) She's a cutie!
  12. oh SM I have only just seen this, so very sorry for your loss. Run free scotty ps. I couldn't write in rainbow bridge at all as it turns out - it hurts too much.
  13. Hey sandgrubber, I've only just spotted your journey! How is your new place? Do we get to see piccies of the girls?
  14. The claim side of things all goes back to the underwriter anyway - the sales or actual company won't be much help. If it's Hollards being asshats, it's Hollards being the asshats all the way. PIA claim forms goes back to the same PO Box that AFS Petmed and no doubt all the other Hollards underwritten claims go to and they're assessed by the same center. The smallprint in most if not all will be the same/similar enough. At the end of the day you're picking between the underwriters Allianz and Hollards, it's just how some of the extras and benefits are packaged that the products might differ.
  15. juice - I'd go softcrate - it contains the hair better too. You'll have airconditioning on when you're in the car in any event, so air flow shouldn't really be an issue. You could leave a corner on each side or the top open if you need better airflow still. I use the K9pro ones and there's mesh on all sides and you can unzip all or part way on almost all of them.
  16. I had a look at the NRMA one, it's really too basic for it to be of any real 'use' - it looks more like an additional consideration (like having windscreen chip insurance) than a worthwhile standalone Pet Health Insurance. Ruffs - keen to hear who you're with?
  17. I don't have anything helpful to add, but some photos of your setup and Molly would be awesome if you wouldn't mind sharing!
  18. Oh Stell I'm so sorry I have only just seen this - so very very sorry for your loss, sending big hugs
  19. Here's a good article by Choice published in March 2016: https://www.choice.com.au/money/insurance/pet/buying-guides/pet-insurance
  20. I have to disagree completely on this, based on putting away the premium value in a bank account earning interest. I had my girl on premium insurance from the day I got her. For most of her life, and even some years, I didn't make the annual or full claim. I don't consider that a 'waste' at all, after all, insurance is just that, insurance, and peace of mind. What was really important, was when she did get ill or there were emergencies, I didn't have to be limited by consideration of $$$money to make a decision on which path to take that was best for her. Her final couple years her treatments would have gone easily into the five figures, and payouts were somewhere between 60-85% (?) depending on the treatment. It meant I still had money to take her to alternative therapies like chiro and accupuncture and hydrotherapy. For the years I didn't need to make a claim, I feel lucky that she was without ailment, and I was without emotional distress because of it. When she really did need it, I was so grateful I had it. Having sufficient credit card space for a deposit for treatment (they don't ask for upfront payment, they ask for a deposit at vet hospitals), is sufficient. At the end of the day, it had all cost more than I had paid in premiums, and certainly more than I would have put aside month by month. We were on AFS petmed and I wouldn't recommend them. But that's probably because they're backed by Hollard too!
  21. great post! Thanks for the review - keen to hear how it fares out on a walk / adventure with the fam!
  22. All good, police, DAS and rangers are on our side....he has settled down now it's gotten serious and he's been breached for the orders himself. awwww...hahaa yes we do love her! Terrific ok I'll spend some time later tonight writing a proper review. The harnesses come with 2 optional go pro mounts, one can be attached to the chest or to the back......depending which harness you buy and which mount is then required for the location you want the camera ;) Fab thanks, I was thinking about just getting the go pro harness on its own.
  23. would love to hear a review - where is the gopro mount located? she looks adorable in the harness.
