Does anyone have any magic solution to stop our mature dog peeing on the furniture inside.

to date the only way is lock him out when we are not home

@teddybeans this is an old post.

AAGM / OP, hopefully you have found a solution. Pen or crate training should also help.

    Hi,

Many years ago we got a beautiful Aussie Bulldog, her name was Jessie, she was a wonderful companion. She got sick when she was 10yrs old and after tests and eventually exploratory surgery, they found she had stomach cancer, we had her put to sleep while she was still under. We didn’t want her to suffer anymore

Then several years later we decided to get another Aussie Bulldog, her name was Annie. Again a fantastic temperament, but she got cancer and she was so sick we had her put to sleep. It’s now been about 6+ years, we have moved towns, the kids are grown up and most have left...

So I have been wondering whether to chance it again. I’m terrified it will happen again, and I’m not sure I could handle that grief again.

Has anyone else been in our situation and what did you do?

My adult daughter, who lives with us,  has 2 cats, we have always had pets. But I see dogs and they are my one love.

    Lynn

Simply, for me, I would be terrified not have the connection or love of a dog again, and be able to bless a dog with a loving home.

Your journey has been heartbreaking but you are deserving of the joy of a canine companion

Woman dies after being viciously attacked by her own pet dog

    • An elderly woman from Sydney's south-west has died after she was savagely attacked by her own pet dog on Thursday afternoon.

The 72-year-old from Wilton suffered "significant" bite wounds and lacerations to her arms, legs and body when she was attacked by the large brown cross-breed, police said.

She was taken to Liverpool Hospital, but her condition deteriorated and she died while undergoing surgery.

The woman's husband, a 74-year-old man, was also attacked and bitten while attempting to drag the dog off his wife.

He was treated at the scene for puncture wounds but is in a stable condition, police said. The couple's son was also present but was not injured.

Police said they believed the couple also had other pet dogs, and had owned the large cross-breed for about three years.

Rangers from Wollondilly Council have seized the dog and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The article says: 'she was attacked by the large Staffordshire terrier-Rhodesian ridgeback cross at her home'.

I'm against BSL, BUT breed does matter.  I've known a lot of pitties in the U.S. and lots of SBTs in oz.  Can't see much difference...both breeds are mostly waggy and friendly to people, often dog aggressive, and have a few very problematic individuals.  Breeding to a large hunting breed like a ridgie can go very wrong.

That's not the point I was making - they have updated the article after I had posted it (quote from snip when I posted the article) - so it seems they did some fact checking, then updated the article, which is rather refreshing. Often, here on DOL, we are unhappy when breed is named and the dog does not appear remotely close to the breed in articles. I was calling out that in this instance, I found the journalism to be more responsible than what we have experienced in the past.

    I'm so sorry @yellowgirl

He was certainly lucky to be with you, and no doubt both blessed to have found each other.

    Hi guys

I have done some research and had a long chat to my friend. We have decided that we are going to sell the pups as Frenchies x's.

I have become a DACO breeder, as I need to be to sell them in S.A., they get vaccinated and microchipped in 5wks, then I'll be advertising them, probably on Gumtree.

To surrender to AWL or RSPCA in S.A. it costs $70, which covers desexing etc. which is fair enough.

This way i can screen homes for them and they won't be used for breeding, as they will have to be desexed at 6mths, being microchipped there will be a record. I can't see them taking long to sell. Then with the proceeds mum will be spayed.

I have mum and pups at mine as its easier for me to care for them. The two girls im supplement feeding under vet advice, as they are very small and struggling to feed off mum. Their boofhead brothers are hogs lol

I'm a little tired doing so much research, feeding etc. lol but I think this is the best option now.

The big shame about all of this is I'm quite confident they are pure frenchies, or frenchie x bulldog:(

    Thankyou again;)

What makes you say this? It would take a certain level of expertise to determine this, or that it was known and told from the previous seller this was the case.

I'm also confused why you're the breeder now and looking after them when this is your friend's dog and your friend's problem?

Steve from K9 Pro is in Sydney, Richmond way.

He isn't cheap and you have to wait to get an appointment, but he is the only one i would go to.

Couldn't agree more. I was with a couple of dog owners the other day, who were at their wits end. Steve was able to help, and the owners walked out confident with how to proceed.

  8. Have you used a trainer yet? There's been several recommendations made in past threads where you've requested a good trainer. What are you looking for in a good trainer or behaviourist? Have you worked on the other issues that you have previously identified, have they been rectified? Each of these could be feeding into and snowballing into all this undersirable behaviour and will continue on this path if nothing changes.

Another good suggestion, but it means I'd be losing that part of the yard, finding something big enough to fit it, and it will be more expense than I want to outlay to be honest.

@PantoThe neighbours are a lovely older couple who I'm sure wouldn't mind what I put up (I'd still ask them though) as that's the side of their house which just has some water tanks (which are ugly to look at from my point of view anyway.

Do you mean put up a colorbond extension thingo Panto?

yes, the colorbond extension thingo

it's strange it has been stepped down before the fence - I wonder if it is a council requirement? Back, side and front fences have different requirements when you're building.

Both the r/e agent and the landlord are approachable, but it would mean getting permission from the neighbour as well, which makes it all a bit more of a hassle than I want, whereas it just being a temporary thing of my side of the fence is all okay.   And thanks Perse, he's getting more handsome each day.

Hey - if you're going to put something up that's not fixed anyways, but hinder view, it would be neighbourly to sound them out anyways? And the landlord might even pay for it. It's such a simple attachment, they just slot in and you screw it in.

When you take it off, you can take the slots out, and rescrew the screws in and leave the screws there so there's no holes.

Hi my name is Faith Alcock and I was the owner of a beautiful male bullmastiff named Riot.

On the 1st of January 2019, my beloved dog Riot was found and taken back to UNANDERRA RSPCA. Still to this day I have absolutely no clue of how he was able to get out of my back yard as my fences are rather tall. At the time Riot was impounded I was completely unaware  of what had happened until 1 week or 2 later because I was on a short holiday. Riot was left in the care of my mother & sister. When I became aware of the whereabouts of my beautiful boy Riot I contacted the UNANDERRA RSPCA and SHELLHARBOUR CITY COUNCIL immediately. I also went into the RSPCA and identified him. By this time the fees were $800+ and being on the pension and  the sole Carer for my mother there was absolutely no way I would be able to afford that amount of money straight away. After I explained that to the RSPCA and SHELLHARBOUR council the fees were lowered to $300 and even that amount was still to much for me to pay in one hit. I tried absolutely everything in my power to try and come up with the money but I was unsuccessful. Since I wasn’t able to pay his release fees he now belongs to UNANDERRA RSPCA and now he is currently under assessment to see if he is fit to be put up for adoption. My thoughts were ok I’ll be able to adopt him back but apparently that’s not the case.

I went into UNANDERRA RSPCA 4 days ago to see if Riot was available for adoption yet but the  lady I was speaking to said, yes Riot is still there but not up for adoption yet as he is still under assessment. I then asked the lady about me adopting him when he does finally go up for adoption, or if I’m able to claim him back as I have saved up enough money to pay the fees for him to come home, and she replied I will never be able to own Riot again as I have no claim! I have no idea what she meant by that and when I asked her she didn’t explain it well enough for me to understand. I then asked well if Riot doesn’t pass the adoption assessment what will happen to him and her exact words were “ he will be put to sleep”

Ive done nothing at all wrong and either has Riot so I don’t know why this is happening or why the RSPCA would rather put him to sleep then let him come home. Riot is my world and I will do everything in my power to get him home.

Please can you help me, I’m begging you. I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best contact number is 0412110864

    Thank you

Other information, The UNANDERRA go by his microchip name which is “CHOP” and his microchip number is 900032002960479

There's nothing more to offer more useful than above, but I'm gobsmacked your sister or mother did not contact you for 1-2 weeks? If the RSPCA were even unaware he was gone (because the timeline is ambiguous), or that they didn't tell you (as the owner) they may believe that he was not left in capable care. Just a thought, playing devils advocate which may help consider what might help provide them comfort in discussions regarding ownership.

Did you adopt him from elsewhere? (curious, because his microchop is registered as 'CHOP'), could that have anything to do with the claim theory they tried to explain?

There's your interim solution, keep him outside when you aren't at home.  Is there a reason he needs to be inside when you aren't home?

He may be peeing on things because he needs to pee, or for other reasons, anxiety, habit etc etc....we need a bit more info, was he recently neutered?  How long have you had him?  Have you asked for advice from where you adopted him from?

Make sure you thoroughly clean the furniture he has peed on with a pet urine enzyme cleaner, or he will go back and mark the same spot.

And welcome to the forum.  :)

    All of these!!

Is he doing it when you're there too or just when you're away?

  13. The link didn't go anywhere for me alas. Each time I've been tempted to buy it I couldn't go through with it, because I think a facewasher in a small bucket of water will do the trick.

Do you still have to pull the washer cup apart and wash/dry the silicon separate?

Thanks much, everyone, for your suggestions.

One aspect that I get conflicting advice from trainers/behaviorists is on the right age to bring the puppy home.

While the most common suggestions is 8 weeks, few said it should be 10 - 12 weeks. One behaviorist in particular was definitive on 12 weeks and reasoned that mother would teach the pup many things between the age of 6 to 12 weeks.

So, I have done a bit of digging over the net and found some really interesting articles alluding to the idea of bringing the pup at 12 weeks old.

    https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/canine-corner/201601/what-age-should-puppies-be-brought-their-new-homes

I have a bit of experience around raising dogs (German Shepherds to be specific) but not from the puppy age.

I’d really appreciate if any one share their experience in this perspective.

    Regards,

    JHunt.

You're doing some indepth research and this is great - and by no means does it sound like you're researching to justify an already made up mind, which is commendable.

Have you heard about the theory/practice behind Puppy Culture? This might shed a little more light into your 8/12wk research. We brought our puppy home but continued his development, and had been in dialogue with our breeder in the lead up to make sure we maintained consistent puppy raising.

(For us, K9 pro helped us continue this journey based on our needs)

    K9 pro .

    I second this.

I have a 6 month old puppy and I have been doing the puppy raising program with K9 pro and I can't recommend them highly enough.

It's a one and half our drive (each way) for me but it's well worth it and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

What is it that you are not quite happy with when it comes to the programs you have already looked into?

    another for these guys.

It's a longer drive for us as well but the bespoke session at our pace and ongoing program specific to our needs and lifestyle were just what we needed. We get a lot of comments and praise out walking now, and for what it's worth I think we have been quite diligent with the training program.

The main driver for using these guys, for us, was the balance between life skills, and training skills (for dog sports and activities etc). They're quite different things, eg, loose lead walking vs walking at heel. Many training programs will lump these two things together.

  16. This is an old thread but I wanted to give it new life.

A few weeks ago a really good friend adopted a 12+ yr old old gal from the pound. She had been there whilst her elderly owner was undergoing medical care. She was ultimately surrendered when this elderly owner was admitted to aged care and no longer able to care for her with a dementia (?) diagnosis.
