  1. We did an elimination diet under vet guidance and at first had trouble identifying a readily available protein he hadn't had before. Our dog will react in about 72 hours, breaking out in a red itchy rash along his belly, in his armpits and groin. It takes about two weeks to disappear.

It took us well over two years to identify the various triggers and we now have a list as long as my arm. All our dogs are now on the same trigger free diet as the one with the allergy is so sensitive.

Beware as I have come across one dog food company that, even after I gave them a list of known triggers, failed to declare the origin of one of their ingredients until I did further researched and pushed him on it. His response when I told him he was trying to sell me food my dog was allergic to was that the ingredient in question was one of the best things you can feed a dog with allergies. Um no, not if the dog is allergic to it.

  2. We used a can o worms farm but decided to give a Pet Poo Composter ( http://www.tumbleweed.com.au/PetPooComposting/PetPooComposter.aspx) a go as we have three large dogs and we either needed to start a second can or upsize to something with more capacity.

So far we're not impressed as we think the worms up and left home despite an ideal set up, conditions and plenty of free food. I'm about to contact the manufacturer about it.

  3. About time! We wrote to our MP about getting this changed in 2006. The law is very unfair for those who don't permanently reside in NSW. We had to pay lifetime registration for our dogs even though we were only going to be there 12 months. We then had to cancel the registration in order to register them interstate because the dogs were not legally allowed to be registered in two places. If we ended up back in NSW, we'd then have to pay lifetime registration again because by law we had to cancel it. We will be penalised because we obeyed the law. I would strongly protest having to pay lifetime registration fees every time we move back to NSW.

Cant really see what the difference is if they bring it for a yearly fee and you stay for 12 months go away and then come back again surely it would cost you just as much if not more .you would be one of the few who cancelled it anyway.

From memory the lifetime registration for just one dog was $150. At the time we had three dogs, only one of which was desexed. Annual registrations in other states/ territories are usually significantly lower. We didn't have a choice regarding cancelling it. Our new council wanted proof that we had cancelled it before allowing registration in the new area. I don't know how others get around not having to cancel when reregistering in another state. Also the lifetime registration does not take into account the variation in general lifespan of dogs. Is it fair that the same fee is charged for a great dane as it is for a chi? I'd be supportive of life registration if other states would honour it. I can't see that happening though.

  5. Haha nice one! Is there a door on that back bit, to stop them trying to escape??

It's strong enough to hold these three which is good as they have a bit of trouble understanding the concept 'one at a time'.

Edited to add that's about 120 kgs in there.

No. There are anchor points at the front but escape has never been an issue with this lot. Keeping them out of the bath is our problem.

  6. I've been considering one of these but how have you all hooked it up to the hot/cold water? Do you use it inside or outside?

We use ours outside. We bought the parts from Bunnings (two way tap adaptors with on/ off switches, tap connectors, hoses etc) and made our own. We leave it connected to the laundry tap, then connect a hose to it and run it out the door to the bath on wash day. That way we have constant warm water available.

  8. Tlaloc will deliberately alert me a couple of minutes before another dog starts to make pre-vomiting noises. He's the only dog I've had that's ever done this and he wont do this particular behaviour at any other time. He doesn't just do this with our dogs, he'll alert to any dog that's about to be sick.

  9. The second time was when I tied him right outside the door of an IGA and went inside for <2 mins to get a drink.

For those that do this, please consider that persons with assistance dogs might be forced to either wait until you come out or run the gauntlet and hope that dog right outside the door is well tethered and not DA. It could be frightening for a vision impaired person with their guide dog to suddenly find themselves within reach of another dog while exiting the building.

  10. We'd stay with the dogs. There is absolutely no way I could get in a helicopter and see the look on their face and terror in their eyes as I fly away and leave them behind. It would haunt my worst nightmares for the rest of my life. If we can't evacuate in time (sometimes you just don't get much warning), then we're staying. The OH feels that way too.

  11. Camera system on back of trailer for reversing and inside trailer to watch the dogs. Also handy to have one on the back of the car for hitching.

With the Toledo and other brands that have ventilated doors, a mechanism to stop dust and water mist going in through the vents.

Recessed metal floor plug in each compartment to make it easier to wash out.

Temperature sensor with a remote reader for monitoring the temp inside the trailer.

  12. I've tried many pouches and my stand out favourite is the Premier. Excellent hinge that works very well. Great size for larger hands or treats for multiple dogs. Extra pocket for clicker/ keys etc. The operation and quality of the hinge is what sold it for me.

  13. I see the female's owner as the bigger idiot. Even if the dogs had known of one another how could the owner be sure her dog wouldn't wind up mauled instead of pregnant, throwing it into another dog's territory? But the husky owner isn't awfully responsible either. If she's quite clear she never wanted to breed her husky, desex the dog. Breeding shouldn't be undertaken on a whim.

How is the husky owner not being a responsible owner? Whilst there are benefits for desexing, not intending to breed (or having irresponsible thieving neighbours) should not be a reason to desex.

  14. Very durable in general except for the magnetic strip which we've had replaced under warranty three times in four years. Easy for the dogs to use. Very easy to fit but you could crawl through the larger ones (however you could do this with any brand/ model designed for large dogs). You do need a wider than normal doorway to accommodate it if you intend to use the entry too.
