  1. Hey guys,

just had a couple of questions in regards to the Ekka, am going with Hudson in the morning and despite being to the ekka may times in the past this will be the first with a dog to show.

I am not sure how hard it is to get the gear into the pavillion? I am not going to be taking much with me, just a grooming table, bag, suit + my dog so can pretty much handle everything in one trip if I don't have to walk too far. I see you can use a drop off area which might be handy with the table.

Otherwise is it far from where you need to park - I don't have anyone to help me, it will just be me!

I see Gregory Terrace is the entry area for the pavillion (drop off area?) unsure of where the parking is?

Sorry for all the questions guys but I am lost!

  2. So if I'm doing ET next Sunday is it ok for me to do the vet check during the week next week?

E+H we must be doing the same one? Laidely? Although I'm not doing it with my girl my OH is lol :o

Yeap that is the one! Will you be going along as well? I am starting to get nervous that he will get too excited and his HR will be high at the checks - silly dog has been brought up in a vet clinic and thinks vets are the best! :p

Or that he will decide sniffing and playing is more fun than the obedience test :) But still excited to see how it all goes!

  3. I might have to take him for a longer ride tomorrow and track our speed because I have not done as much bike training as I would have liked recently - I had him ready for the ET last year and then moved just at the wrong time! Have been much slacker this time with my training schedule but overall he has been doing more, so hopefully it will work out!

  4. Any last minute tips for my first ET? *nervous*

Last minute training - testing he is ready for this? Anything I should do for his pads in these last 2 weeks?

I am happy he is pretty fit, but might need to do a few more 5km bikes in these last 2 weeks as most of our exercise in the past 2 weeks has been for agility training.

  5. We had 2 runs - Novice agility and jumpers. Agility was DQ he had great fun running 2 little joy laps though and certainly tried to show everyone how much fun can be had!

Only just 2 faults in our jumpers run - handler error (isn't that always the case) so we ended up 27th of 58 dogs.

I had so much fun in the Jumpers once my nerves had settled down after the first run!

I will continue to get some photos over the next few days and hopefully try and get a few of each group.

  6. I don't actually usually get enough time for him to look at me at all, once he is over that last obstacle he doesn't even slow down + out the gate he goes!

Am working on a target that I can get him to go towards after a run. He just loses focus once the obstacles are done! But I will stop taking this thread off topic.

Super excited to meet some of you at Nationals!

  7. Yes, sorry guys! Hudson is not quite weaving the whole lot yet.. and slowly but we are getting there. Got to 6 poles straight tonight but slowly :) haha

I am not sure after training tonight if we are going to be ready. He had improved so much but has now taken to running out the gate after a run instead of waiting for me after the last jump. Partly because I have get him so excited and taught him to run ahead of me down a line.. now need to figure how to train the stop at the end!

We will see how we go, we might not compete if this keeps up.. don't want to end up with him running onto another dog or causing any trouble.

  8. Getting ready for my first show in almost 12 months and I was wondering what the current thoughts/fashion is for wearing short sleeves in the showring as compared with a jacket.

I have two possibilities for the shows this weekend -

Purple suit (have worn this the last 2 years at the specialty, but I do love this suit)

Or a navy and black patterned peplum top with a black skirt

Thoughts? Am I better to be safe and pull out some other jackets for the weekend (international judges) or can I wear something with short sleeves?

  9. Well Hudson and I have been making huge leaps and bounds in the past few weeks! Finally starting to get his attention, at the same time he is really starting to understand what he is doing.. and we are having SO much fun!! So many people helping us out along the way, but we went to our first trial last weekend, had a run in agility which was a huge learning experience, then a few not for competition runs which helped his concentration and made it so much more fun for him in the ring.

Training again yesterday and I am hoping this has caused a permanent change in his behaviour in the ring, because he was so focussed and we even got to try a few new things into sequences which was so much fun!

First time taking a tunnel from the opposite end to where I was, which was so great for a dog that is a bit 'meh' about tunnels. Multiple rear crosses!!! (first time trying these mid run as opposed to training them) and also the first backsides in a sequence.

Heading to another trial tomorrow hoping to get some not for competition runs in with a two ring format and getting him to stay with me :) That is the aim anyway! Will try and get some video and hopefully I will get some photos of some other runs too and test out the new camera.

  10. Thanks guys I will look into talking to another trainer - I am thinking maybe trying to do some distance work with Steve from K9 pro, as really liked the seminar I went to last year with him.

I know I am making excuses for him and need to work out this behaviour, It is just upsetting to me to see this now after spending so much of my time and energy into trying to do the right thing in the past in regards to training etc.

If someone else takes him to work with him and I am around, he spins and pulls at the end of the lead to try and get back to me, or jumps up on the person. He is horrible to work with anyone else, at least for me most of the time he does what I ask of him.

With him being protective I meant more of the growling when he hears noises outside the house, as he never does this when he is outside, only with me in the house.

I have seen Aussies with aggression issues before, but he has shown no other inclination towards aggression at all.

Don't get me wrong.. I am not trying to fix him with food. I am just running out of ideas as people I have asked for help with him in the past have simply said "he is a puppy" and "he is excited/happy". But he is NOT a puppy anymore, and I have such hopes for us as a team... I don't want to just retire him to being a house dog. I am willing to try whatever it takes.

  11. Thanks guys, I am a Vet myself Lisa so have been keeping a close eye on him and he has not changed at all recently with his health.

He has always been an overexcited dog, and running off to visit other dogs is not unusual for him - I have been working hard to stop this.

It is just now that he has started becoming protective as well I worry that things might escalate into aggression.

Right now we are not at that point so I want to work with it.

By behaviourist what exactly do you mean? I have been discussing with trainers and none seem to be overly concerned by his behaviour, they agree that he is just a friendly, over exuberant dog. Not sure if there are other behaviourists close by I could talk to.

Still thinking that trying a raw diet might be of some use? Or might make me feel better while I try to sort out these issues. For now I will stop taking him to obedience and possibly also the agility training where he was attacked as he has been acting up there as well and stick with the one night training a week.

I will go looking for some raw feeding resources.

  12. Hey guys,

I have recently been advised that maybe trying a raw food diet might be the way to go with my Aussie. He is a great dog, and has been doing so well in training, but have been having problems when he gets over-excited and overstimulated he just loses his brain!

He has also been going through a strange behavioural period these past 2 weeks.

He is turning 3 years in June, and all of a sudden has started growling at noises or people when he hears them from inside my room, but also he growled at a dog today while I had him on lead at obedience which is so uncharacteristic of him.

I am fairly upset by the whole situation and I am wondering if food may be playing a role, as up till now he has been on almost 100% dry food with omega 3,6 and 9 supplement.

I have been looking into a Tryptophan supplement to see if this might be of use?

He is an entire male, but I don't think this would suddenly be a hormonal issue at this age. He has also been socialised and trained in group situations since he was a pup and have never had any issues.

He has in the past few months been run at, growled and bitten by numerous other dogs which I think might also be playing a role.. but it none of these situations has Hudson actually growled or eyeballed another dog, in all cases he had his back turned to the other dog.

I think other dogs find him hard to read with his crazy eyes and no tail, but I am really trying hard to find some answers as to how I might be able to help this situation.

I feel as though if he didn't get quite so riled up and excited so easily, a lot of this would be less likely to happen!

So any ideas on diets? Or links to other threads which may be able to help?

I love him dearly, and would really like to be able to keep taking him to training.. but if I can't get this settled down it will be back to showing and long walks for us as it seems to be training which has him at his worst.

Sorry for the rambling.. Have just had another horrible night at training and I am clutching at straws to find an answer.

  13. My first dog (not as a kid with the family dog/s) is my current one, Hudson!

He is an Australian Champion at 13 months of age with a Best In Group and multiple Class In Show wins. We are almost ready for both obedience and agility trialing now which is very exciting! He is a once in a lifetime dog, love him so much!
