  1. Well the thing about kibble is that anything you add will unbalance it. The instructions from our breeder (different breed to your puppy) was no more that a golf sized amount of mince. How old are your 2 dogs? Yeah they could get hurt. I don't let my adult play with puppy, well she won't anyway because he's too small and not fun yet.
  2. I get mine off eBay: This is the seller: http://stores.ebay.com.au/PET-STATION-PET-...1QQftidZ2QQtZkm
  3. I use Advantage and find it excellent.
  4. Congratulations!!! Did anyone take any photos or video?
  5. To me passive dominance is not a nervious dog, it's a dog that doesn't need to physically repremand another dog, its' body language alone is enough to assert itself. Wat do other people classify passive dominance as?
  6. Once a day because that's what I was brought up to do - I can understand the big dog/bloat thing, but is there a good reason to feed twice a day? Dogs are 12 and 6 months old BC's. I've found by cutting back their night time feed and increasing their morning feed they seem to be more settled at night and have no night time toilet breaks. The little guy was getting us up at 2am every night, despite a successful toilet walk after dinner. Tony MC - Do you only feed once a day because you find your dogs lethargic if they have been fed in the am before work? I was thinking a good feed in the morning and then they'll be more inclined to sleep through the day??? Cheers Tony R Because it makes absolutely no sense to feed a dog it's only meal in the evening when it's using little energy. We feed twice a day. Just take what you normaly give and give half in the morning and half in the evening, no biggie is it? 6 Month old dog can hold it's bladder etc through the night.
  7. My pup - 7mth old Cav King Charles Spaniel by the name of Franklin is starting to drive me batty! They tend to do that at that age I love him dearly... but the amount of shoes he has eaten (and always the expensive ones) is driving me crazy! That would be your fault not his Yes i lock them up, but sometime you forget to close a door or something and in he goes! Again, that woud be your fault, not his :D Anyway, my real prolem is that he knows he is doing the wrong thing, you can see the guilt when you walk in the door... Nup, no guilt what-so-ever from your dog, your dog is simply reacting to your body language / tone of voice / change in your scent. Great book called Dog Listener by Jan Fennell, will teach you about Canines, as much as we love to put human emotions onto a dog in a bid to try and understand them more it doesn't work because they are Canines and we are Humans. He has a habit of shredding things... mostly paper... but yesterday he got into the bin in the bathroom and tore everything in it up... Your fault, not his. He also jumps on the dining table when we arnt home... What's up there that is so interesting? Does anyone have any real solutions for stopping naughty behavior... Start treating him like a dog so he's lessed stressed whilst you're out. Give him boredom busters. Put away items you don't want him to ruin, effectively he's a teenager. We arnt home during the day to police him so he seems to forget everything he learns on the weekend and at nights! Wouldn't you get up to mischief if you were stressed and bored? He is restricted away from bedrooms and bathrooms when we arnt home.. Good move :D Help is appreciated!! Thanks Peta

    Puppy Food

I'd continue to feed whatever your breeder fed. If you got your puppy from a Petshop, they won't know what the backyard breeder fed and will just make up whatever product the sell to get you to buy it. Any premimum kibble is suitable, if you can find one for small dogs that would be ideal. Royal Canin tend to have specific kibble for small dogs/large dogs etc. Kibble is a fully balanced meal, so adding anything to it unbalances it, so you may want to do some research into it. For people who feed meat and veg with their kibble, you'll find that people usually feed raw meat bcause that's what digests better for dogs....after all their Canines not Humans who cook their food :D If you give any veggies they need to be mashed otherwise they serve no purpose as they can no be digested correctly.
  9. LOL Dante has this witching hour any time he is awake.

    Scaredy Lion Dog

I've had a foster dog terrified of a Cow Skin Rug. I'd suggest completely ignoring the behaviour, I know this will be hard as you want the dog to be with you, curiousity will set in. To get the foster pooch over the phobia, I was playing with him where he felt safe and then moved the tug of war down the hallway to where the rug was in the other room, over a couple of days he was sleeping on it. You can try placing treats on the floor leading into the room but don't go to an effort to get te dog to acknowledge the treats, the dog knows it's there.
  11. Thanks Akitaowner... I haven't tried covering her crate with a blanket so I will definitely do that tonight. She usually has a couple of things in her crate with her should she wake up, her favourite teddy, usually her pigs' ear and a chew toy. I feed her in the crate and also utilise it for time outs. I was using the toilet (I have a very small house) but she would just scratch the crap out of the door and when you're renting as I am, this can be disastrous. Now I find that she calms down fairly well in her crate and I only let her out once she has done so. If she continues the same behaviour then she goes straight back in there until she's fully "over it". I'm just going to have to start again I think. I feel sorry for the neighbours already. I'm not sure that is a good idea, the crate should be a positive place to be, not used for punishment. That's just my opinion though.
  12. Looks like a bunch of fun, Leila would love it, but she's only make it around half the course LOL
  13. Nasty to you, completely natural for dogs. In domesticated dogs you see this happen for reasons such as the mother didn't keep her whelping area clean or the human didn't keep the whelping area clean. You can combat this if it bothers you, simply distract the dog with a treat and give it praise.
  14. I'd reccomend she head to the book store and purchase a book by Jan Fennell called Dog Listener. There's even a case story of a terrified rescue dog in there. I personaly wouldn't be using flooding, it can so easily backfire if out carried about by a professional.
  15. Dante is doing exactly the same....little brat LOL And I did take him to the Vet....yeah yeah yeah over protective Mum hehehe All completely normal apprantly. Now even though puppies from 8 weeks old should be getting 3 meals a day, some just don't want their lunch. Dante is meant to have 2 cups of kibble per meal setting and he only has one. So I only give him 1 cup, once he starts eating the whole cup then I'll up his meal again. And like others have said, the food bowl gets picked up 15 minutes after.
  16. I'm trying o get Dante to use the pads for when I take him into the office. It's raining today so he did wee on them, however he will only want to poo in the yard LOL I brought mine off ebay, I don't dispose of them straight away as I need the smell to stay there whist he's learning. The infused smell they have doesn't tell the dog they have to pee there, it simply attracts them and in many cases it attracts them to rip them up LOL
  17. From what you have said you haven't actually crate trained your puppy, you've just put the dog in there and hoped all would go well. Start crate 'training' your puppy, make he crate a desireable place to be so that when the puppy wakes up it's not confused/upset. Write down what toilet stops actually resulted in her toileting so you get used to her schedule. When you do the toilet runs, simply give her the toilet command, don't chat with her or play with her or cuddle her....you're out in the yard for a reason. Place a hot water bottle (not too hot of course) in the crate, as well as a treat when she first goes in. My boy also has a crate toy which goes in with him. Make sure you tire your puppy out before bed. That means a hour before bed, have a good play and stop 15 minutes prior to going to bed. Do a toilet run before putting her in her crate as well. Dante did 3 wake ups in the first 2 days and would scream the place down, we expected this though....away from his mum, away from his litter and in a different environment. We're now on night 6 and he can sometimes sleep through the night but usually will wake up once and cry to go to the toilet. We make sure he's tired when he goes to bed and then we don't have an issue with him making noise. We also have a blanket that covers half the crate, our bedroom gets warm in the night, that's the only reason the crate isn't fully covered.
  18. I'd reccomend you head to the book store and purchase a book by Jan Fennell called Dog Listener. In the meantime, don't let you dog off lead if it's not reliable at coming back. I take it you're going to an obedience club?
  19. I spoke to the RSPCA a while ago, it's a really grey area for them, they don't have any solid legals in regards to a prong collar in NSW. But don't expect to use it at the majority of dog training clubs, they simply don't have the education in training tools required to be open minded and they are governed by larger bodies who say what you can and can not use.

    Puppy Escapes

You're not going to have the whistle on you at all times so I wouldn't go with that routine. I would reccomend you head to your local obedience club for starters but you do have a Beagle and Beagles follow their noses. Most importantly do anything you have to to make sure your dog never gets the opportunity to get away from you again.
  21. At 6 months old, I would more point to a dominance issue. If he isn't a pedigree future stud dog, is there a reason you need to keep him entire?
  22. You can loose points for bending down when giving to down signal?
  23. That's actually dangerous because if the puppy isn't put off my smell alone and injests something that is not meant to be injested then the puppy can get ill or poisioned. What if the puppy gets this near its' eye? Have a puppy with a burning sensation in it's eye is not on in my books.
  24. Simple solution....watch your puppy like a hawk, it's dangerous for your puppy as well to be chewing cables as so forth as you know. If you're puppy is doing this when you're out then put your puppy in a pen or run. You need to watch the puppy so you can catch it in the act and give it a firm no and give it something it's allowed to chew then praise so puppy learns an association. Correction then praise. Good luck
