have you had direct experience with them okway? i only ask because i've used a kennel owned and operated by dog people that are fully active in the dog world here in Adelaide and i'd never use them again - in fact, i'd go as far as to say they shouldn't be in the pet boarding business. If you've had experience with them and could give me a little more info about what you like about them, i'd be grateful. taa
I think I know the one. If so yes very active in show circles, 'top' breeders, big winners, judges even if I'm not mistaken, but big failure at boarding from every one I've ever talked to that have used them and a person I knew went for a job interview and walked out!
I'm sure there are great dog people running great facilities but there are some that seem to rely heavily on 'reputation' they don't match with service
Sounds like the one - i boarded Wilbur with them once; never again. Rats ate through the food container i gave them, he was a filthy mess when he came out. The dogs were all just left in a large dust bowl of a yard all day long and as we left they made a snarky comment about Wilbur.
I think you may have us confused with some other kennel. We do not and have never had rats, all dogs are bathed and clean before they leave, and dogs do not spend the day in a dust bowl. As far as somebody walking out on a job interview, I have never heard of that either. Anybody is welcome to come and inspect our premises anytime during office hours. I have also just checked our computer records and we have never had a dog or cat called Wilbur board with us.

Which dry dog food would everyone recommend? I'm a lab breeder and have four large dogs to feed along with the occasional litter. We are along way from our nearest shopping district (2 1/2 hr round trip just to get to Coles) and even there I can only get supermarket brands. I'm looking at joining the breeders club of one of the brands where you can order online and get discounts and delivery. It is impossible for me to feed raw as we are on generator power with a small gas fridge that barely fits all the human food. So dry kibble is the dogs main diet along with meaty bones on shopping days and bits and pieces (eggs, yoghurt etc) a few times a week. None of the dogs have ever reacted to any food and will eat just about anything in true lab style ????.

I used to buy a multivitamin & mineral powder by Animal Science. This company is no longer in business and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a similar brand to replace it?
If you are feeding a good quality balanced diet why would you want to add anything to it ?

Never buy a puppy as a "show dog" from someone who doesn't show themselves AND who cannot provide lots of evidence of multiple dogs of their breeding doing very well at multiple shows over a number of years.
I'd also never buy a pup from someone who tells you that every pup in the litter is show quality. It does happen but not often.
Take the pup an experienced breeder/exhibitor tells you is the one. Personally I'd not go lower than second pick dog or bitch.
I don't agree with not buying lower than second pick. It is a very broad statement to make. 3rd or 4th pick in a litter of great quality is better than 1st pick in a very ordinary litter

I agree with a couple on others on here that Phil Thomas at QLD Vet Specialists is the one to use. I have used him several times for frozen semen and fresh semen AI's and had success every time. He is also the person that taught many others how to do semen work. He may be more expensive than others in and around Brisbane, but he is by far the best and you get what you pay for.

I know there has been general threads regarding who recommends who in to use of frozen semen but after having had multiple attempts with what was according to the vet/s good quality semen and achieveing nothing I am curious as to who has had success with frozen semen?
If you have had success which vet did you use (specifically for me from Brisbane area)?
I am considering sending a girl interstate after so many failures in Qld has anyone done this and had success?
If you dont wish to publically name a vet feel free to PM.

Im lucky that I live an easy distance to Michael Bell, so therefore should make it a bit easier. So basically I can add about $1,000 to the costs of Cyrogenics.... so a fairly expensive exercise but then if i get a good sized litter it can be worth it for the new bloodlines.
I class every litter as a loss of money to breed what i need for the next generation. I dont even consider the thought of even breaking even.
I look at the cost of the semen and the insemination and the raising of the litter as the cost of getting what i need for myself

I have just returned from Europe where I have been to view some dog activitiy (as well as holiday). Have seen a couple of lovely dogs and although I would love to import a dog or bitch just don't feel comfortable with putting a dog on a plan for such a long time.
Therefore would like some ideas of what the costs are for importing semen as well as the process and costs likely here for the AI with frozen semen.
I agree, contact Cryogenes in Melbourne they make it so easy. I am using them at the moment to bring semen in from America and they have done everything. The first time I imported semen I did it all myself and never again. This is the second time I have used crogenes

No longer any show training at Caboolture. They say they don't have enough volunteersm to instruct.
Hi All,
Check our facebook page for details, or contact the club.
Training is on Wednesday nights and is $3.00 per dog and to attend you need to become a member (which is $5.00 for the year) which covers our public liability etc while training.
Thanks,
Nadia Attridge
If show training is being held by a club wouldnt it be covered by the Dogs Qld Insurance ? I have never heard of clubs taking out their own insurance before

I am in my mid twenties and I take great offense at the notion that "old bitchy ladies" rule the show world.
That is why the world of dogs, and many other worlds are dwindling, because young people today don't want to listen and learn - they want to speak and know, and now.
Recently at a training night I had one of these "old bitchy ladies" teach me more about the conformation of my dogs in one hour, than I'd manage to teach myself in years. Not because my eyes can't pick the better dog, or because I can't read a standard, but because her eyes had been taught how to read a dog, and how to interpret a standard, by the "old bitchy ladies" (and camp gentlemen) of her generation.
It's a wealth of knowledge that is not available to you unless you stop "knowing", and start using your eyes and ears and a polite mannerism and humbleness ...
I couldn't show a dog down a dark lane, but I try. I have been laughed at, scorned, congratulated and ridiculed. I agree that unless you have been in those shoes for decades how can you earn the respect to be on the other side, or know the "tricks" of showing to see through them to judge the for the better dog.
Maybe the notion of breeding, and breeding champions, is that to breed you can't do it alone - therefore maybe you have had people teach you things along the way. You have learned how babies grow so you can amply judge different age groups. You have lived it (and hopefully learned it) through every litter, and every pup, until finally you learned how to pick the best pup out of 10 very similar other ones. Hopefully to breed you have been trusted with a main register dog, a dog who is not "mediocre" and have been shown how to choose a mate which compliments or counteracts faults - and should therefore not be breeding a litter of "mediocre" dogs destined for the tip yard or the pound.
Just my inexperienced opinions... but I am sure there are more reasons behind the rules then a bunch of old bitter twisteds with nothing better to do.
I have to agree that this is a very informative accurate response to the person that would like to become a judge. As people have said, that breeding and titling dogs does teach you how to evaluate dogs. My motto is to judge a judge by the quality of their own dogs, and even better if they have consistanly bred good dogs.
Also with your term bowling ball fronts on Dobermanns, I can not recall when i last judged a Dobermann in Australia with a front that I would describe as that ( and it is a new term I havent heard before). Also if you are going to comment on what is required in a breed, please get your wording correct. The Dobermann standard ( I assume you have read and understood it) says " Forechest well developed." I am not saying that well developed means overdone, but it is the wording that judges must judge by

I have recently visited a friend overseas that was given a large quantity to try with his dogs. After less than a week he gave it all away and went back to his old food. He was very unimpressed with what was coming out of his dogs and that is the main reason he stopped using it

I have noticed that Taste of the Wild is now available in Australia. I am a Canidae ALS grain free feeder but after reading great reviews about this kibble in America for a long while I feel compelled to give it a go. Is anyone else feeding or thinking of feeding this food?

I can also help if anybody needs a lift to the meeting to support Dogs Qld on this important night.
I know that I want the future of our hobby determined by dog breeders and exhibitors and not the RNA

YAHOO!! Well done to Dogs Queensland!!!
They have a new revised constitution which includes postal votes for regional members, 8 Councillors elected in the next 12 months, and a constitution that can be easily changed (no more 75% vote needed!!!). They've listened to members and are providing a constitution that WE want!!
The only thing needed is a 75% YES vote at this SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING on 19TH JANUARY. We then proceed to Democracy!
The alternative is to allow the RNA to appoint their own Council in February to control our dog world.... I for one say NO!!!!!!
Everyone in Queensland needs to attend this meeting and vote YES!!
If anyone needs a lift from the Redlands area, contact me.

Hi all, for those that may not be aware, this Saturday 22nd October the National Junior Handler Final is being held at Durack at 4.30 pm. As we are bringing out an overseas Junior Handler specialist judge for the final it would be great to see a lot of people come along to watch and support the Juniors.

I notice that you list all those vets as specialists. Are you aware that there are only 3 American Veterinary Board certified Canine Reproduction Specialists in Australia. Phil Thomas in Qld, Stuart Mason in Victoria and there is a new one at the Vet School at Gatton
