  1. wow ! I had forgotten this thread but something someone mentioned in a different topic today triggered my memory,
  2. So if a pet owner on one side of the US wants to buy XYZ breed from a reputable breeder on the other side of the country, just as a pet, they will have to fly across the country to see the dog? I understand they are looking for ways to stop the mess of puppy mills (registered breeder puppy mills in this case) and online sales etc, but I can see this as possibly 'forcing' pet buyers to look closer to home and maybe end up with lesser quality, different type, different breed, or BYB. Or unscrupulous breeders selling pets as 'breeding' animals etc It's just crappy that good breeders end up having to jump through hoops to try to put an end to this trade.
  3. What are they trying to prevent here? Mass export of puppies for the international pet trade??
  4. yes as others have hinted at, I am wondering if the dog is highly allergic to flea bites and that has led to a secondary skin issue, which can be harder to deal with. ONE flea bite will set of 3-4 weeks of intense itching and subsequent scratching & chewing in some dogs. The flea can be long gone but the dog can scratch as if it has a thousand fleas for up to a month from just ONE flea bite! Leading many owners to believe the flea treatments are not effective. Obviously you need to continue trying to find effective flea treatments but if the dog is scratching itself to pieces a trip to the vet for some itch relief in the interim might be advisable to prevent secondary skin infections and give some relief.
  5. She will likely ask a bundle for the pups and proudly remind everyone how 'famous' their poor little mumma is That will make them worth more, right??
  6. wow that is very interesting. PS. If anyone sees this I can't post in the breeders forum but I want to suggest 'Karat' as a golden name for SSM !!
  7. My link A NURSE has described her terror at being savaged by a rottweiler that was on the loose despite having already attacked someone else. "It just latched on to my arm," Jaymee Arnold told the Herald Sun. "It must have sensed my fear or something." Ms Arnold, 25, an intensive care nurse, said she was on her way to work from her Brunswick flat on Sunday morning when she was attacked. She had seen the dog, but risked trying to get to her car after she saw a neighbour interact with it. "I maybe said 'good boy' to it. It locked on to my arm and just would not let go. "I was screaming for someone to help. We tried to get into my neighbour's house and even got through the door, but the dog would not let go. "It was then that the man came and kicked at it, and managed to pull it off." Ms Arnold had surgery on Sunday to repair her badly mauled arm and spent three nights in hospital. But she could be off work for months and may still lose some movement in her fingers. Neighbours believe the dog had escaped from a nearby property and been lurking around her flat for an hour. It still had a heavy duty chain around its neck. But despite pleas to authorities, the dog was not picked up. Ms Arnold said she had had trouble sleeping since the nightmare attack and would not go back to her flat. "It is really frustrating to think the owner had been involved in another attack. I don't want this to happen to someone else," Ms Arnold said. "This could have ended far worse if I had fallen over. I will be off work for months now." Moreland City Council said it had seized the dog and was investigating the attack. Council spokesman Marco Bass said the dog's registered owner was a person of interest in at least one more dog attack. In July, the State Government promised harsher penalties for owners of dogs that attack people, including a 10-year ban on owning a dog. A spokesman for the Minister for Agriculture said the Government planned to introduce the legislation to Parliament before the end of the year.
  8. I have known 2. One was a Lhasa Apso which presented as a bitch in every way. She got a lot of UTI and always had a sticky messy vulva. eventually they knocked her out & looked at her under a microscope only to find a tiny penis! You couldn't see it with the naked eye. They left it alone and managed her hygeine and she lived a healthy 15 yrs.She was desexed as a puppy so must have presented as a bitch internally. The other was a Cocker Sp that had what could only be described as an incomplete penis assembly. It was obviously not right just from a quick look. It was always a hygiene issues, an absolute messy nightmare actually. They had a friend who was a vet who attempted surgery but it was not possible to bring the dog through surgery with any normal future & it wasn't woken up. It was about 9 months old when I met it. Interesting subject but not always positive :/
  9. There was also this one on the same tragic day on SA roads. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/puppy-may-have-defied-odds-in-triple-fatal-on-eyre-highway-near-penong/story-fni6uo1m-1226707315157 Kudos to you & yours DD for taking care of everyone. I was really happy when I spotted this update this evening....but then I read through and wasn't quite so happy.... My link A PUPPY that emerged as the lone survivor from a Penong car accident that claimed three lives has found a new home. Adopted by local farmer Georgie, who did not give her full name, the fox terrier-chihuahua cross, is now doing well and has been named Mazy. The tiny terrier defied amazing odds to be alive today, after being found at the scene of the fatal crash late last month. The story of survival took a twist after Georgie collected Mazy from local photographer Andrew Brooks, when another family came forward to claim the dog. By then Georgie had "fallen in love'' with Mazy so she paid $100 to keep her. "The lady took me back to meet her family and they were happy to see the pup,'' Georgie said. "I told them how I'd really like to have her and how I'd fallen in love her and they were happy for me to have her. "It ($100) is a big price but she is really beautiful and, to me, she's worth the money.'' Mazy's sister and brother stayed with the family while Georgie took her new pet home to meet her new family. "We already have a foxy-chihuahua cross and he was the main reason we wanted (Mazy),'' she said. "When she's older, I'd like to breed from them.'' Mazy was accidentally left in the car while the deceased visited friends at Yalata, near Ceduna. She travelled about 130km to Penong where the tragic accident occurred, killing two men, aged 46 and 56, and a woman, 45, all of Western Australia. Amazingly, Mazy emerged from the wreckage unharmed and Georgie was touched when told of the pup's survival. "I saw a picture of her and I was heartbroken for the poor thing. I fell in love with her straight away," she said. "She's done really well (and) the vet gave her all her injections and she's perfect. She's a great little dog."
  10. My link A POLICE dog stabbed during an incident at Elizabeth Vale last month is recovering well and should soon return to the front line. Koda, a six-year old German Shepherd, had stitches removed this morning, clearing the path for his return to active duty. Veterinarian Dr Nigel Steyne said Koda had made great progress since he was stabbed twice in the incident on August 25 . "Although there is some scarring, Koda's wounds have healed very well and he should be fit for duty very soon," Dr Steyne said. A man has been charged with several offences including aggravated assault police, property damage and injuring an animal. In the wake of the incident the state government announced new laws and tougher penalties for attacks on police animals. The new laws will be introduced to parliament making it a specific offence to kill or injure a police animal, with a maximum penalty of five years prison. Koda and his handler, Senior Constable Simon Rosenhahn, will now take several weeks' leave.
  11. ewww wow I have never seen anything like that on a puppy!
  12. I gave up on sacks and screwed a board onto each frame, nailed the carpet scraps on to the board.
  13. Id love to see it! Wow I have never seen or heard of a wart on a young dog? In the salon we see plenty of 'warty goodness' but it's rarely on dogs under middle age, usually seniors?? Learn me all about warts on youngsters, please !!
  14. And whose fault was this? This post really annoys me. Blame the owner not the dog Where did I blame the dog! Of course it was the owners fault! I even said the dog was not happy! I meant more like it was a PIA for everyone there having to listen to the unhappy dog. The fault for that was squarely on the owner.
  15. Maybe if the dog had been allowed inside it wouldn't have barked? The one next to me in the polling booth was fine - quiet, leashed, controlled didn't even realise he was there to start with as I grappled valiantly for ages with my metre long senate ballot paper, numbering 1 - 73 below the line. No it probably wouldn't have barked if it was with it's owner in the line. But I know if it was my school gym, or community hall, or church that was being used as a polling booth, it would be NO dogs on polling day. Seriously I do not want male dogs hoiking on the ballot boxes or door frames or girls deciding to make a lake somewhere, or dogforbid someone leaving a 'present' in the hall etc. Just as they do with their kids letting them run everywhere, a lot of people just do not watch their dogs or make any attempt to stop the dog from marking or jumping up the legs of the people in front etc. Yes it's sad that I think that way but 2 and a half plus decades of being around the average dog owner on a daily basis has left me feeling this way. If people learnt to keep their pets out of other peoples space, clean & quiet when in public we might see peoples attitudes change. I know most DOLers would but we don't make up the majority of average jo dog owners, far from it.
  16. When I went to vote yesterday there was one dog tied up to the church fence. It was actually a customer of mine. A little Poodle cross. It barked its guts out for all of the 1/2 hrs or so I was there. The owner had walked the dog there on her own, had to tie it to the fence to get in the line which was reasonably long, and then we all had to stand in line listening to it bark scream wail & cry for all the time. While I was trying to concentrate on counting to 73 below the line all I could here was that bloody dog. It was only a few metres from the sausage sizzle & cake stall and the people operating them & buying from them were clearly not happy either. It was an absolute PITA. I can still manage to be grateful to not have to fear for my life while trying to vote, but that dog was not happy, it's owner was not happy, no one around the entire scene was happy. It wouldn't even enter my head to take a dog to vote.
  17. I get that the pick & choose mentally would be annoying, but really, I am just happy to be able to vote in our safe & democratic country rather than have to dodge bombs & bullets to try to vote in a corrupt country. Take a deep breath and just be grateful to live in Australia today :)
  18. I was just thinking about that dog today too!
  19. Me me !!! I'd do it for half that! I am the dog toenail cutting whisperer lol. There aren't many I have met that I can't clip in a calm & humane manner. I do know my limitations though & a few have gone home still tip tip tipping the floorboards.......
