  1. Oh my I quite like Reason.

everything happens for a reason, yes? I knew I would find a reason for it all. If she barks it will be the voice of Reason .If the neighbors tell me shes been barking, I will tell them NO , you have been hearing the voice of Reason....

Yeah I rather like that. I sure need a Reason to be here right now!

  2. Thankyou everyone.

I have narrowed the list a little bit.

Im not sure im quite ready to yell Hope, Joy and Faith across the park just yet.

    The bacon one was good!

Hilda does seem to capture her quite well.

When I saw Aurora it set my brain cogs in motion to a name I have always loved.....Aura.

On the redhead theme, Julia and Pauline sprang to mind.... and sprang out again.....

I do quite like Tick, as she does tick all the boxes.

Funny enough we actually have the Massey Fergusen factory in our town! Fergs?

Lumpy Space Princess does it for me. Just the kind of nonsense im into!

Cow, because they are my favourite animal and I always wanted a pet cow.

Keep them coming, I am undecided still. Although Aura is probably at the top.

    Rhonda?

  3. ok here I go.....

Several people have asked how the house guest dog is getting on with the Skyes.

I got DeeDee in 2008 and many of you know, I took Bobby from a pound late last year. no actually late 2012, so technically, the year before last!. Then my wheels started falling off. I was sliding into depression. Depression so bad i am pre occupied with suicidal thoughts. Then my dad died suddenly, and my mental health declined further. I was having behavioural issues with the dogs due entirely to me not looking after them well. I was having a hard time looking after myself. I ended up in hospital. I had to take stock of everything and make some extraordinary decisions. One of them was to send the dogs to live with a friend/client. At first it was just Bobby, and DeeDee joined him a couple of months later. The dogs are together, and thriving, and in my opinion, in a much more suitable home for their particular needs. None of it has been easy. My mental health is swings and roundabouts. I have lived without a pet for months now. Then out of the blue comes this dog. I am doing battle with my conscience. One side is telling me everything happens for a reason, and I see positives for myself and this dog, if I decide she stays. The other side is telling me, how dare I.

I havent posted on DOL about the situation I have been in regarding the dogs, for fear of being beaten up for my decisions. I know people will judge and make up their own minds. But before anyone derides me, please understand that no one has walked my path or had to face my demons. If any one can tell me what its like being perfect, then I will make exceptions.

    :flower:

  4. I know she's a girl, but I think she looks like a 'Derek'. As in Zoolander. She has the same 'blue steel' face in all those pics :D

Haha! I had never heard of or seen Zoolander, so I googled some video and you're right! She has that same look every time! Lol

...and yes I do live in a bubble. I have no interest at all in celebrity or stars or such.

  5. I am very sorry you have ended up in the position of having a dog like this. It is not your fault that through nature or nurture she has come to this point.

It seems to me you have a very stressed dog. Just like us, when a dog is feeling stressed, their judgment is poor, and reactions may be unpredictable. However, dogs generally revert to the most successful behavior, and it seems for whatever reasons, she has learnt that under duress, biting is successful. Both to diffuse the situation, and to relieve pent up stresses.

The thing I found alarming in your OP is that the dog was obviously free roaming in the house with the electrical guy that she ultimately bit. The poor dog is not a confident animal, and was basically left feeling like she was in charge of a situation she did not have the skills to manage.

I am not a behaviour trainer, nor have I met the dog, but from what I read, this is a dog that needs to have every responsibility removed from her. She needs to be kept out of every situation where she may feel she needs to make decisions. She either has poor nerve or has learnt inappropriate ways to manage her stress, more likely both. You need professional advice for how to help her cope and make decisions in situations.

As others have hinted, it is likely the dog cannot be 'fixed' and will need much ongoing work and management. Going forward you need to be honest with yourself as to how much work you are willing to put in, and how much you are expecting from the dog,

    Good luck !

  6. Thanks keep them coming

After working with pet dogs for 28 years now it's kinda hard to have something a bit original. Most of the names I hear, I think ' oh I know three dogs with that name' or ' oh no way, I groom one of them at least every week!'

I have had a Riley before.

    I can't have a Morgan Morgan, can I.....although I hear that's trendy right now!

I don't really like names that end in a 'y' or 'ee" sound either, too babyish in my head!

So far my favorite is Tick.

I like Trash and Grunge too

Or maybe Princess FruFru Fairyfarts , yes?

  7. as the title says, this dog needs a name.

I like short strong names of two or three syllables. And I do not like names that need explanations, such as 'thrutrisha, which means hat pin is swahili' type stuff.

Examples would be Goose, Crakka, Gambol, Lush. Short fun descriptive stuff. But open to any suggestion

    TIA

    ETA.....it's a girl.....

  8. I have often wondered why the pedigree dog community, via the controlling bodies or a private enterprise, doesn't fight fire with fire. Not only should pedigree dog breeders be all over pet advertising sites bringing their message to the people via clever and honest advertising, but what about really taking it to the people via shopfronts. why not have the state controlling body offices in Westfield or the state capital mall for example. Next door to the pet shop even. Take the challenge of public relations to the public.

  9. So what's the story with the mysterious houseguest? I see you've signed up for a year of photos which indicates a long-term guest and I saw in another thread you mentioned foster/guest. I'm ever so curious! And she is beautiful too.

I really cant say much. It's kind of complicated and delicate, but yes, I expect her to be a long term house guest. I will offer more info as I know more myself. She needs a name so she can become 'previously known as houseguest' ......

  10. Can I join this project? I just have a digital point n shoot camera so don't expect anything to speccy!

I am determined to shake the black dog and need as many activities as i can to make me participate in life and shitz in general....

I would be doing 52 weeks of houseguest.

    more explanation as we progress!

    Added you Skyefool :)

    Thank you.

    1/52

  12. I live in a small town an hour or so from Adelaide, right opposite the riverbank reserve and Murray River, and pretty close to the caravan park. The town is overflowing with tourists here for a good time. The caravan park is chokkas , there are campers over the other side of the river. Tomorrow night will be fireworks display on the river about 200 metres from our house, add to that all the random ferals with poppers of their own mooching about on the reserve opposite and even on boats on the river, and the caravan park hosts a party in there for the tourists until the wee hours with loud music etc

There have been a few random bangs this evening nearby.

So don't come this far south!

I said after last year I would also load everyone up and go bush, but I expect there isn't any getting away from it!

  13. Nasodigital hyperkeratosis would be my guess. I seems quite common in the cavalier population that I see on my grooming table. Out of interest cheek her feet too for signs of deep cracking, feathery looking growths or horny growths. A good check up at the vet. If it is this condition there doesn't seem a lot for it except management with oils and creams and things.

  14. I let my dog/s sit on my lap, not the chairs.

I've seen the hygiene state of some dogs brought to the vet. I'd rather not sit where such dogs have been.

    Kirty:

We have no problem with dogs on seats at our clinic. In fact, quite often our clinic dog gets up with the clients too! :o

The LAST thing I want to see at a vet is the unrestrained, unsupervised clinic dog or cat wandering aroud reception. Just want you DO NOT need if you have a DA dog or a high prey drive one.

It's bad enough when clients aren't forced to have dogs on a leash or cats in a box!! Took my DA poodle up to Sydney for a consult on spinal issues. Unrestrained Mini Schnauzer in reception so I head for a quiet spot. ""Can you weigh your dog please" says the vet nurse. "Please keep your dog away from mine" I say to client with mini S. "my dog is not dog friendly'. I head for the scales and before I know it the Mini S is in Darcy's face and he reacts. Vet nurse rushes out with a lead for the Mini S. Too bloody late then!

Ughh, I get this! It annoys the crap out of me that some grooming salons have 'salon pets' loose, or worse even a 'cageless' free for all. All animals are contained appropriately in my shop or else !! And as for seating, speaking from a grooming shop perspective, I have a faux leather lounge and hard plastic seats, and I welcome couch surfing pets as long as they are still on leash and under control.....

  15. Skyefool, if you find a vet who titre tests in Adelaide please let us know.

Most clinics I spoke to didnt even know what it was and my vet quoted me some crazy amount.

    Ta

This is such a big part of the battle to get pet owners to accept change. It seems many veterinarians, most perhaps, either don't accept the science, are too scared to change, or just find it too hard to deal with skeptical or fearful clients.

I also would like to hear of Adelaide veterinarians who offer titre testing, triennial vaccination protocols, and /or are proactive with making changes and helping clients understand these changes.

I am for ever grateful for having a forward thinking honest vet who more than twenty years ago had the gumption to answer my vaccination questions honestly and scientifically, not just rattle off manufactures recommendations .

  16. Hi everyone

After having yet another frail old teenage dog handed to me with a proud owner stating they were just at the vet for their annual jabs etc, I am looking for some real life stats about people who have been Titre testing instead of vaccinating. It's been around for a few years now and I am asking for people to tell what results they are getting from titre testing. Has anyone found they still need to vaccinate? How many years have you gone vaccination free off the titre test result etc etc. You get the idea.

I myself am all for puppy vaccination schedule, and in years gone by I would say do the first annual booster and then no more vaccs for life, but now I'm even second guessing whether that first annual booster is even necessary, I guess a titre test instead.

I have so many clients still vaccination dogs annually into their late teens, and some of them having reactions to them, and when I hint that perhaps it's not necessary anymore they look at me like I have lost my marbles. It's very hard to try to explain to these people.

So, I was wondering, for example, is there anyone out there who has been doing titre for several years and found no need to vaccinate? Or tell me your experiences
