  1. I don't have a link but from experiencing this frequently in my salon, owners expressing they want a litter from Precious because everyone should have a Precious etc...... besides all the talk on costs etc the one fact I look directly at them square in the eye and ask 'would you cope if Precious was to die pre/post,during whelping due to complications?'. That one thing sends them reeling to the vet for desexing. I relate true stories of other owners who have lost their Precious and they can't change their minds fast enough. Of course if we are talking about people who want to breed multiple dogs for profit, this probably wont bother them, they will just get another dog.

  2. I saw this video today and was disgusted, insert any dog instead the breed isn't what disturbed me. Dog on lounge, food, owner with their arm on the dog, toddler grabbing dog and squealing and not one verbal comment from any adult OMG

    Video

I have a nearly one year old ASD bitch and a male CASD coming on Sunday and every interaction is monitored with my kids, my son is 2 and this story is just heartbreaking and so avoidable

    JFC! Oxygen thieves :mad

  3. I think we can speculate on this case all we want but the end result is that this extended family are all living a nightmare that could not necessarily have been predicted based on the child and dog's previous interactions. In aviation there is a swiss cheese theory relating to fatal airplane accidents. They say there are so many safety measures in place that all the holes in a block of swiss cheese would basically need to line up (ie all the safety measures would need to fully break down at the same time) for a fatal accident to occur. This situation reminds me of that - if the dog had not been there that day, if the dog had not been off it's chain and if the dog had not followed the child into the house then maybe this would never have happened. If, if, if. We are not always able to control every small aspect of day to day life and I am terribly sad for this family because killing that dog wont change their memories of the event. How do you even recover from such an experience?

Sometimes really horrible things happen to good people. All we can do is not take our own, or other people's dogs for granted when they are around high risk humans like babies, kids, the disabled, frail and elderly because we will never be able to get inside a dog's head to find out what makes them snap and kill like this. As humanised as they are they are still canines with the instincts that go with their species. Big or small doesn't matter either - a dog attack is still a traumatic event for everyone involved that could see the death of both a human and the dog in question. We should never be complacent.

Absolutely! I think sometimes people forget that every dog is a free thinking individual with teeth & the free will to use them. No matter the size, breed, training or whatever.

  4. I really like the Swiss German Shepherds (white), I'm not sure if they have been recognised as an official breed yet but the ones I met had lovely temperaments.

Yep, they have been separated a good while ago in Europe and I believe in the US too..? They're like the "pet" shepherd, easier all around but still maintaining the size/looks.

    Has everyone seen

video? Dingo vm Haus Gero, supposedly the GSD with ideal movement. Unfortunately we've steered quite far away from this. :/

I posted that video earlier in the thread. It might move nice for what is desired by some in the GSD but I still cringe when I watch it.

  5. Hi there - my girlfriend and I have been looking for a dog for a while now, and after quite a bit of research we've fallen in love with Samoyeds. We're now in the process of looking for breeders, and we're looking for some advice - are there any good active breeders in Victoria? Is there anything else we should know or any advice people have about the breed? We're both active, in our 20s and about to move to country Vic to a place with a large backyard at the end of the year, so we'd be looking for a litter arriving at the end of the year or the beginning of next. Open to any and all suggestions and advice. Thanks, Nathan & Emma.

I'm sure someone will come along soon with more personal experience with the breed but have you looked here

    or here

  6. Looks like we have a happy ending.

I took the bat out to the big gum tree at the front of the house just after dusk. I shook it rather indignantly out of the tissues onto the trunk of the tree. It just sat there for a few minutes but every time I moved it screamed at me! So I backed off and waited with a torch. It scampered up the tree a little, screamed a bit more & flew away!

So i'm really hoping that it'll be drinks all 'round and a 'you're never gonna believe this....' story at the bat bar tonight.

Just confirms what we knew all along I guess. I am bat shit crazy!

  7. Aww, it must have wandered into the house and looked for a dark, enclosed place to roost. Bats go into torpor when they roost, so they often can't fly away if disturbed because they are too slow and sleepy. That is a small one even for a microbat. Maybe it's a forest bat. Many of those are insy weensie. Most species rarely bite or scratch when they are in torpor. I have met a few exceptions. Best to handle them with gloves on. They are so little most types of gloves can be protective enough. Just got to make sure with the reduced dexterity and sense of touch you don't drop them or squish them. I've always thought they feel very fragile.

Maybe you could put a bat box up in your yard. Studies show bats use boxes even in the middle of suburbia. As long as they don't get taken over by bees or ants. It gives them more places to roost so less competition with other animals.

Thank you. That is all very interesting.

I haven't actually touched it. I just tipped it into a little food container full of tissues with some air holes in the lid. It spread its wings and they look undamaged.

I think the entry point is either the disused chimney above the metters stove in the kitchen, or through the old fashioned wall vents in this old house. They are a lot more porous than the modern designs. Sort of swirly patterns cut out of a metal plate.
