  1. yeh - I had a brainfart - thought you were in NSW. Have you considered trying some of the old school options? And please note I'm not saying any of these WILL work. Just MIGHT be worth a try. Garlic, Yeast or Apple Cider in diet Diatomaceous Earth around the house / yard Essential Oil? I use lavender in a spray bottle. Last time we had terrible fleas (and a cat) we'd spray the pet and human bedding twice a day as well as the lounge. Both collars (dog and cat got a few drops lavender and all bedding was washed in it too). Dunno if it helped too much but it appeared to. Other oils; Citronella Peppermint Eucalyptus Cedar Lemongrass
  2. Wowza. Can I ask where in NSW? I'm in sydney and a friend was just complaining about fleas too. Persephone has some good tips. Good luck
  3. In the 15 years I have lived in Sydney I have seen two ticks - and that includes 5 years vet nursing. North Syd does certainly have them so get a good vet sorted ASAP. Learn what to look for and how to deal with them. SASH are great and not too far from where you'll be. in terms of my own personal opinion - just get a heart worm injection it's so much easier and you don't have to think about it every month or quarter. The other good thing in that North Sydney Council is progressive with it's pet laws (set by local councils in NSW) so where Marrickville has about 10 official off leash zones North Sydney has 198. Basically any park or reserve other than sports fields IN USE and areas within 10 meters of children's play equipment are off leash. NB: Chatswood is actually in Willoughby and I can't speak to their exact requirements but ... http://www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/your-neighbourhood/pets/Dog-Ownership/ The risk of adverse reactions to heartworm injections is very high. I will never use it after having a dog react badly to it and develop allergies that it has taken me years and thousands of dollars in alternative medicine to get him back to normal. Chatswood is definitely high tick risk so year round treatment every two weeks will be needed. No idea on vets in the area and you won't need SASH or ARH unless you need a specialist for something the normal vet cannot fix. They are MUCH more expensive than normal vets for everything. Hopefully some locals will be able to advise on vets in the area. Yes - agree on North Sydney being high tick. I did actually say that - and to get a vet sorted ASAP. To also learn how to check for and the signs of ticks. Very scary to have them. Wasn't recommending SASH or ARH as as an every day vet (can you even reg a regular consult?) Only saying I have used both and they're great. Always nice to have a recommendation :) Again - reaction to heart worn inj - I suppose its each to their own. I have never seen or had a reaction and I'm crap at remembering to even take my own medication on a daily basis. I suck when it comes to that. Once a year is much more convenient for me. I'm sure that my opinion would change if my boy had a reaction to it.
  4. We changed a few things immediately - got Guin a new water bowl (which was needed) and did a massive spring clean. She also sat on our laps through many a long cry - I couldn't go into the yard without tears for almost a fortnight when my old man went. We spoilt her but also tried to stick to routine. Maybe yours would like one on one walks (depending on number) . Just be gentle but don't hide your emotions too much - they're best at taking their lead from you and if you're "acting strange" they will pick up on that. So sorry for your loss. Big hugs.
  5. I'd really like Scottie to sit 100% of the time ;) (we'll get there :) )
  6. Parra is probably out of the question full stop due to the motion sickness. Homebush might be a go. Will look them up. thanks

  8. That's the very general vibe I'm getting from google - Of course I also have a pdog who gets very car sick so long distance is out. I do know Parramatta is more casual but it's an hour from home and starts at 7pm on a friday so.... getting to Parra from the inner west on a friday night with a car sick dog is not my idea of fun. Scotties behaviour and recall is good enough to be off leash in public but I certainly don't want to have to get to level 3 obedience before we can advance to agility class (a real example) and I don't think I'd live to see the day he gets to level 3. Another club stopped emailing me when I asked about being a casual attendee. I think I've been spoilt as my Obedience teacher is a pay as you go set up and I really like her. Never mind - something will crop up. I'll ask the trainer when class goes back.
  9. I'm so sorry for your loss.
  10. Yeh- the vet I worked for still sells males at $70 and females at $100. Chipped, desexed, vaccinated for age, treated for fleas and usually very well litter trained and well loved. Doesn't come close to cost but also stops impulse buyers (she has a few other theories too - but they're not mine to share). Please don't think I was saying they should be free - I was just shocked at the sudden hike and as I have since said - I'm clearly out of touch with market norms :)
  11. Suppose I was just so shocked at the massive jump and it seems like a lot of money to me (but then I have never actually paid to purchase an animal - it has always been my parents or they've come "free"- until Scottie. Thanks for the input :)
  12. I just don't get why you'd go to the trouble of moving the animals around. There has to be a serious underlying mental health problem here too - it's almost like she'd hoarding animals. Makes my blood boil to see horses in that condition and new born foals too. grrrrrr Edited to add - I agree with Little Gifts too. *shakes head*
  13. Week ten (with the clothes line) just looks like trouble :) He's lovely.
  14. Just a general observation / conversation starter. I noticed that "my pound" has increased the cost of adopting a dog - which is totally OK. I understand they need to cover their cost - it appears they've put the cost of all dogs up from $400 to $415. However I have noticed that they've put the cost of "high value" dogs up significantly more. Pups, and two adolescent Standard poodles are up to $615. They vaccinate the dog (c3), flea and desex (if needed). They also assess, mediate as needed and shelter tip the dog finds a home. They're a no kill shelter. I think this is outrageous! I fully appreciate being given an incentive or discount on a senior dog but I couldn't justify paying $615 for a bitsa from the pound. I think they're being greedy and hurting these dogs chances or finding homes - Or am I just overreacting Thoughts?
  15. I can get roo mince from my local IGA in a re-sealable bag for less then the cost of chicken mince (Newtown, Sydney). (This is the brand http://www.macromeats-gourmetgame.com.au/Products#.UtIJ5nk0jwI) You can also get roo from most woolies. I also think, might have imagined this, that you can get it online...
  16. That all sounds pretty good. We're a more than likely :)
  17. I'm finding that Jules. I am lucky my obedience class Is casual / no pressure. Just wish it ran more often and rain jail or shine.
  18. I would like to put names to faces ( and tails). I'm a maybe depending on date and location
  19. Oh. I hadn't read this article. I do truly feel sorry for that entire family (canine and human). What an experience. The http://leightonblog.com article is a good read.
