  1. Oh and I also got a enterntaineze puzzle ball. I throw treats around his pen and the garage when he's put away and reduce his meal size.
  2. We have a kong and will use a bigger one for meals and freeze it when he's older. The puppy size is too tiny for lickables I have a scoff stopper bowl to start with and will use the puzzle bowls if I can find one for less than $30 postage I have seen the kong wobbler, might get him one too. When he's in the yard full time I'll throw kibble amoungst the grass as the base is quite spongey heh so he'll have to search for meals. We currently use dinner kibble as training time treats. He pays heaps more attention and learns quicker. We've started making him sit for dinner and as the bowl comes down each time he gets back up he has to sit again before it gets lower. Trying to make him learn 'wait' eventually.
  3. I got Vinnie an AFP slow feeder bowl. I've noticed he really throws his food down, I know he's a puppy, but even when he's just eaten and finds the cat bowl he'll inhale that too. I've worried about bloat and choking. These are meant to help, has anyone had success? I also read that in brachycephalic types bloat is more common because they naturally gulp more air when eating.
  4. If she doesn't want to fix the problem then she deserves to be attacked. However the dog doesn't deserve to live in a constant state of imbalance to cause him to attack. What a mole.
  5. Adaptil. Works a treat for my dog, I know that it doesn't work for everyone but I still tell people to give it a go. I also use Feliway for my cats. Godsend for us.
  6. My acceptable range is where my dog can still hear me and isn't in a position of annoying anyone else and/or causing harm to them or himself. I would need to be able to see my dog at all times and have a chance at running to/after him if anything went wrong. Nothing wrong with a dog being a silly doodle running around where they have the space designated and hanging out with dog friends. However if you can't or wont exercise control over your dog you're ruining it for everyone.
  7. Baaaaw I wish all dogs were this easy to bath heh
  8. However breeding is defined by This is a questionable statement which can be interpreted as persons who intentionally breed animals for sale rather than someone who has a litter and re-homes the litter (by whatever means). That's how I interpret the statement however this may mean anyone who re-homes a litter.
  9. See I saw the code of practice but was under the impression it was for pet shops and registered breeders. I have no idea if this is actually enforceable by law
  10. Sorry if I seem snappy and I don't mean to be. It's hard explaining myself each time it comes up with the same reaction from people. Training is a must. Unfortunately he missed the training starting when he was 8.5 weeks as it was still within the week of vaccination and the one we prefer runs the course every 4 weeks. So we start in a week. We've already started basics like sit, come, lay down and stay.
  11. Yes hankodie I'm aware of that now. It's been pointed out to me several times. I thought I had the right information when I researched and from my experience 6 weeks was fine if they were on solids. Unfortunately there isn't anything I can do about that now.
  12. From reading the above and checking his records he got the 6-8 week one at 6 weeks, the 12 week one at 8 weeks and we are in an endemic area for parvo so had the 16 week one today.
  13. Vinnie had needles at 6 weeks, 8 weeks and another lot today at just before 12 weeks. Before his 8 week ones we didn't take him anywhere that we weren't carrying him, didn't let him socialize with other dogs or let him on the grass at home. When he was 8 weeks he had his kennel cough and second lot of parvo. A week later we were allowed to walk him. I asked the first vet in dubbo when he got his 6 weeks and my vet here in newcastle at 8 weeks. He had a booster today and that's it for a while. Wow I have to say you guys assumed a lot before I had a chance to answer.
  14. Hmmm not sure! I do know his toes don't usually look that spaced out when he's getting around. May just be the angle and/or movement. I certainly will ask. He has HUGE meaty paw pads though.
  15. Thanks for the advice. I was more asking him to sit to get his attention on me rather than the dog and in the first instance it worked well. I haven't trained him to greet in such a way, he just does it. I also know that his behaviour now as a puppy may not be the same when he is older. I do praise him for being calm around other dogs and remove him when he gets too excited. We have him signed up to start puppy pre school in a week and will continue with obedience training after that. It was never in my mind to not do that. I want to ensure that I am correctly training my dog by not missing essential cues from my dog and others, which a trainer can help me with. I have no intention to stop taking him to off leash areas. At this stage I have only gone when there are no other dogs. If there are I walk away or keep him in the leashed section. I know this may not be the opinion of other people as a good thing but it's my choice with my dog. I believe I'm taking the precautions I need to at this time with my dog at these places. I thought this dog would have continued on with his owner and should have done if the owner called him off. Vinnie was still on his leash at this point. I haven't encountered an owner that has paid so little attention before and I'll certainly be looking for it. After his 8 week vacs my vet adv to wait one week and then we would be fine to take him out.
  16. Thanks for the advice. I figured as much but that's life eh? It's why I come back and keep asking questions. Everyone is going to have their opinion and I can sift through everything as I chose.
  17. Last night I took Vinnie down the road to the off leash area near my house. When we got there, there was a miniature cattle with it's owner off leash trotting around. The owner was outside of the boundary of the area which is fenced by a rope and pole style fence. He would of had to step over to get in where he was. As we came in, the dog rushed at Vinnie, barking and coming in hunched and low. I told Vinnie to sit which he did. Vinnie waited for the dog to start sniffing and began to present his rear as the dog got closer but instead it started to jump on his back to stand back and bark at him. The owner had his back turned and was walking away while this dog continued to harrass Vinnie. I got between them and continued to ask Vinnie to sit while I moved this dog away. Not once did the owner call him away, he just walked on. I told the dog LEAVE GO! and he left. Was making Vinnie sit and getting in between them the best idea? It was all I could think of at the time. Vinnie didn't seem to worried about it. Walking home he was rushed again by a miniature pinscher. She ran out of an open gate followed by a small silky terrier type barking hysterically. I again stood between the dogs while Vinnie pulled back and tried to run away. I asked him to sit again which he did but he didn't like being there. It wasn't till the dogs were out on the street and had been barking quite a fair bit (getting closer each few seconds) that their owner came out and picked them up. I said he needs to be careful of letting them run out and they were being aggressive. He shrugged and said he didn't know what he could do about it as they were young puppies (10 or so weeks) and maybe my dog just needed to get over it. He's been rushed before by other dogs. He doesn't ever have a problem with dogs that are much bigger than him and is respectful of space. He always waits to be sniffed first and will back off when given warning. It's the little dogs that are his size and smaller that bother him. If they aren't near him he's fine but he'll head off if they come over. When I had dogs before I rarely had issues with dogs rushing them if ever. But now each time it happens the dog owner is either aloof, makes it out to be something wrong with my dog or just excuses the behaviour. If Vinnie rushed a dog I bet I'd have the council ranger at my door with a restricted dog notice before I got home! is it that more idiots own dogs or that people just don't care any more?
  18. I'm using them atm and the scented stuff. My pup is 11 weeks and has a really clear understanding on where to go. He is confined to the laundry when we go out and has a pee pad in there which he uses. We put one in his pen at night for just in case and he will aim for that. When he's hanging out with us in the house he will either bark or walk to the back door to be let out despite there being a pee pad at the back door in case he doesn't make it. He walks right over the top of it. We take him out every hour during the day when we are home and once at night if we haven't slept through. He makes it from 10pm-5/6am most days unless he's had lots of water prior to bed. He'll whimper a bit at night if he needs to go. The scent helps to get him to go at night when he's buggering around. I sprinkle some down and he goes right away.
  19. I haven't blamed breed at all, not sure where you got that idea from other than defence reaction because you own one. What I have said quite clearly is they way some of these breeds and crossbreeds are bred loosely speaking by people who lack the knowledge to be breeding dogs in the first place. There is no question that the owner of a dog is responsible for it's actions, that's a given, but my point in this is the ownership of a dog who is not possessed with sharpness, fear and reactive aggression takes a lot less vigilance for inexperienced owners to prevent situations as occurred in this attack. The fact is that all dogs don't bite and attack people mismanaged or not. There are plenty of massively irresponsible owners out there who grossly mismanage their dogs who don't bite people because they essentially own a good environmentally stable dog in the first place. It is not defence because I own one. What a stupid assumption. It makes my blood boil when anyone assumes anything about a particular breed in regards to how vicious it can be. To say that not all dogs will bite despite being mismanaged or not is extremely ignorant. The dogs who have attacked/bitten me and people I know are all breeds that 'don't usually do that'.
  20. And I'll definitely remember the 8 weeks for next pup. Both vets said nothing about it and the information I had didn't say what that does. But my ignorance doesn't excuse the law.
  21. He doesn't have HD and has been thoroughly checked. It's something I came upon when researching the breed to help with the possibility. It also helps with boredom. I do not plan to do so until he is properly grown (1-2 years). I'm not sure what your comment means clover.
  22. I'm not sure what this is from but thank you for bringing this to my attention. I read as much as I could find and from my understanding it only applied to registered breeders and pet shops. Obviously that was wrong. Exactly what is this exerpt from? Keeping in mind Vinnie did not come from a registered breeder.
  23. Wow Amax-1, I don't mean to feed the trolls but srsly. I see here that you've not been handed the title of 'Dog Behaviour God' in life and are desperately trying to earn it. I think you are wasting your time trying to shove your very biased opinions down other people's throats. All dogs can bite. All dogs can snap one day. Unfortunately some dogs are just capable of more harm due to their size ratio. Many dog attacks can be put down to the owner's negligence and/or people not being well equipt to be around dogs. That's when the dog suffers for no reason by being PTS. Just so you know, I grew up with bullbreed dogs. I also own one now. I'd trust my bullbreed with my step kids 100 times over a toy breed. But that's my experience. BLS is bullshit. Enough said. Stop blaming the breed. I hope this boy and their family are able to recover as best as possible and know this was the individual dog and the circumstances. Again unfortunately the causes of attacks are rarely given because that doesn't make a good news story.
  24. oh gosh that is just too cute. A good photo to show size changes too.
  25. Yes. The person wasn't a registered breeder or a pet store. There's actually no legality around when you can have them however the RSPCA recommends them to be weaned. He was weaned before we got him and wasn't hassling mum for any further feeds. We give him a puppy milk supplement because he really enjoys it. He's growing size wise quickly but not as heavy as we thought he'd be which is good for now. He's got all the time in the world to build up. We're going to weightpull him to help with hip displacia and boredom.
