  1. Oh I love this. I was watching shows on YouTube and all the ones I watched were Westminster and the dogs were so well behaved. I was feeling a bit intimidated. It’s good to see they can muck up a bit and no one takes it too seriously.
  2. His ears were taped when he arrived from the breeder. Apparently with Amstaffs they periodically tape their ears from time to time as they grow to help them sit right for conformation. The tape is off now and we may need to retake when he starts teething
  3. I feel like this is perhaps the right place to ask about this, I’m sure there are a few breeders and show people in this community. I am a little confused where to start. Usually first thing I teach a pup is to sit, but I dont want a default sit in the show ring. I have no idea how to stack him, he is so wiggly and won’t keep his little feet still!? any help and guidance would be wonderful!
  4. He went terrifically at the vet, very healthy and 6.1 kg. He will get his next vaccine next Friday, Scout is coming in for a check at the same time. Scout has an auto immune issue which requires sporadic use of steroids, so just following up with her in her last flare up. so nice to have a healthy pup who has t even tried to eat a rock. we have made great progress on capturing calm and on crate training. Last night he went to bed with no complaint at 8:30 and slept all the way to 5am, did a wee and went back to sleep for an hour and a half with minimal complaint. trying to clicker training this time and need to find a minute to learn more about it. He recognises the click as a marker now and knows he gets a treat. So far he knows “look” where he meets my eye and I click and treat. here is is yesterday looking super cute.
  5. He instantly was very confident and comfortable with us but not really engaged, if that makes sense? Wouldn’t look at my face at all, just my feet, even when I got right down. Now he’s looking for me to check I’m nearby now and then. first time I’ve ever bought a puppy home who didn’t have Diarrhea right away! Looking good! vet visit tomorrow just for a health check.
  6. He is gorgeous but very nippy. We have been working on the and just started charging the clicker this morning with his breakfast. Clicking and treating for biting a toy instead of us and any behaviour really that meant he wasn’t biting us. He tore my shorts within a short time he was just manic. today he has regular plays and is currently passed out.
  7. I’m sorry everyone! he got here and he was like an instant alligator. Apparently he slept almost the whole journey and he was full of life! Very hard to get a decent photo but here are some.
  8. I’m just filling in time waiting and thought I’d let everyone know that Chase has been in transit all day and expected to arrive at my house in the next 20 minutes or so. Im so excited. I imagine he will be hungry since he had no breakfast this morning but so have no idea what to expect. It must have been quite a traumatic day. here is a photo of him from yesterday before he left the breeder
  9. Yes, I already have a lickimat for him and a puzzle type treat toy. I am happy to give raw meaty bones on occasion but the smelly, messiness of them means that he would probably need bathing and certainly can’t have them on the carpet in my office while I work. so they’re an outside or in the crate treat some days. I do know that Kane’s Pica was not normal and regardless of what he had to chew he felt the need to eat other things he shouldn’t. I loved the antlers because they weren’t smelly or messy and provided hours of calm chewing. From what I have read fallow straps are much softer. I will do some research on those.
  10. I am interested in opinions on these for puppies. as many of you know our precious puppy Kane had a penchant for eating inedibles, he swallowed rocks whole and chewed rocks and bricks. He did have an antlers which he enjoyed chewing. He had a fractured tooth at a young age and I’m not sure if it was from some thing he shouldn’t have chewed or the antler. in my opinion, a chewers gotta chew, so I need to choose the best safest option. i read that fallow straps were the best antler options for puppy teeth, since they are from the softest part of the antler and I ordered 2 online, one soaked in beef and apple cider and a plain one. They don’t seem very soft but I haven’t had a chew so just interested in people thoughts. Chase will be arriving after a long journey on Tuesday the 8th September.
  11. Oh thankyou, I hope to have lots of happy stories, I certainly had lots of stories with Kane, I aim for less of those stressful stories this time. We sure had plenty of love but wow it was a stressfull time.
  12. Just in case anyone is interested, I choose Woolworths pet insurance. It’s very competitive price wise and the coverage is very similar to other policies. There are also some nice benefits for everyday rewards members. I get a $50 gift card for signing up and 10% off one shop per month for the term of the policy. I just ordered a lickimat, a treat puzzle cube and slow feeder bowl. 2 fallow straps and still need a new bed and a bag of the food his breeder is using. Everything else I still have from Kane.
  13. Makes sense. I think we are happy with both, such short notice means we had to really rush to choose the name. I feel satisfied with it. kind of like “his royal highness” with a twist. thanks for your help!
  14. Do you think 'His Royal Reflection' isnt good in that respect? to me it implies that he looks the same but in reverse? Call name is something completely unrelated. We are calling him 'Chase'
  15. A total surprise. I’m very excited and grateful to Kane for leading us to this. I hope this puppy is half as sweet as Kane but happily accepting him as his own little man. we also got Rid of all the rocks in our yard!
  16. Heir of the dog had me in stitches. we like “his royal reflection” given he looks like a mirror image of his Dad. Literally his marking are all reversed. I don’t have a clear frontal picture yet but I’ll post a side by side comparison below.
  17. I am happy to say who the breeder is, it is HotasHell Amstaffs, his father is HotasHell heir to the throne, so I was thinking of something a bit royal? Is there a way to check if a name is already in use? I cant seem to find anything. I am really excited!! ready for some sleepless nights again
  18. I am very happy that I am unexpectedly getting a puppy in just over 2 weeks. I inquired with this breeder before the puppies were born but all of the puppies had homes from her waiting list. The breeder said they were looking to keep a male if he had the correct structure when assessed and if they decided not to keep him, would I be interested in a pet quality pup? At the time I said to let me know if that happened. I did mention that I was interested in showing though. Yesterday she messaged me saying they had been assessed and he was of show quality, if I wanted to show, I could have him!!! hes adorable and I am very excited. She just told me to choose a show name (2 actually, first and second choice). Where do I even start!? This time we are 100% getting pet insurance. Can anyone offer advice on who to go with (or not go with)?
  19. Unfortunately the AI was not successful, so I will be waiting for a puppy still. Very disappointed but I am sure not as much as the breeder, such a shame for her after all the expense. So I will just keep swimming..... Waiting for a new baby to love.
  20. Thanks, I sent both of these to Maddy. She said that her pet insurance covers only accidental injury for the first six months, and she wants to deal with this early on, so while behavioural vet is not excluded it won’t be covered for some time yet. she has made an enquiry with calm companions and we will see how she goes
  21. Hi everyone, my daughter is doing an amazing dog with her 17 week old pup but is having a few issues neither of us are sure how to deal with. She has decided that she will deal with it sooner rather than later and wants to see a behaviourist or suitable positive trainer to help. For context the issues are barking at strangers and sometimes strange dogs, even at a big distance. He is very submissive and fine with my dog but is a little fearful around new people and dogs and it seems to be escalating. Also he is super clingy to my daughter, he loves me but if she leaves him with me he gets very upset and can’t seem to focus on anything else. So if anyone Knows of a behaviourist on the Gold Coast the can recommend? Also does anyone know how much she can expect to pay? She does have pet insurance but I don’t think this would be covered. thanks
  22. Scout would love a new little brother. My Daughter brings her small breed puppy over to visit and Scout is oh so gentle and sweet but she just wants to play and be rough sometimes!!
  23. Update 24th August: the very first breeder I enquired with has offered me a pup. He was assessed yesterday to be of show quality and already 6 weeks old! I have had my eye on this puppy since the day he was born and now, by some twist of fate, he is mine and coming to live with me in just 2 weeks!!!!!!!! Hi everyone, just an update. i have found a wonderful breeder I really get along well, whose dogs and whole breeding program I adore. I have been chatting to her for a while and she is happy to let me have one of her pups. she has a bitch who went through AI 3 weeks ago and we are waiting one more week to confirm this pregnancy, fingers crossed there will be a pup for me inside of her gorgeous Mummy dog. If she is pregnant the pups are due the day after my birthday and would come home mid November. in the meantime we are doing lots of work in our yard. We have two huge areas which are free of tasty pebbles now and a safe place a pup could be outside and I could have peace of mind (even though I’m sure most pups don’t eat rocks obsessively). so there’s a real frisson of excitement and each week that passes I am more able to smile about my beautiful Kane and not cry. hope you are all well xx
  24. UPDATE: Just touching base to give you all an update. A little bit of time has passed and I am managing better. I still have days that I cry and miss my little guy but most days I can smile at his memory and the things Kane taught me about myself. I have made a decision..... I am not going to take the puppy on offer, Kanes sibling. I decided that aside from any possible health issues, I need my next puppy to be an individual and not a Kane replacement. Of course any puppy would be an individual but I really think that accepting a pup from Kanes parents would be setting me up to have different and unreasonable expectations on that pup. I have been researching breeders and found a beautiful lady who I feel a real connection with, she is happy to let me have one of her pups from a future litter, so for now, I am content with that. I will let you all know, in a new and more positive thread, when there is a new pup on the horizon. I may even look at showing our next baby who will be from an excellent pedigree with much show success. Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. I will continue to visit the forum. Talk to you all soon.
