  1. As the major questions have been answered, I just want to share my experience of my huskies triumphant form of escape.

As far as our yard goes we've been very lucky our dogs have never tried to dig under or jump our fences, BUT if someone leaves the front door open for a touch too long out they go, one day 2 escaped Tiki went one way and diesel went the other, so if your dogs come inside watch your front door.

    1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc)

My husband & I have been involved with Siberian huskies for 9 years our first 2 were pets and then we decided to get into showing in the conformation show ring, we run them in harness in the winter. We do breed but not very often. We have 4 dogs in total at the moment hoping to increase by 1 more at some stage this year.

    6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult?

We walk ours for at least 1 hour every day

    8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods?

I honestly believe that the Siberian husky is happiest when they have another dog for company.

    9. How much grooming is required?

I brush/Comb them regularly they are bathed quite often b/c they're show dogs.

    10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)?

Sibes should be fine with kids but like all breeds they need training and should be well socialised.

    12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be)

Definitely if the dogs have been hip scored & eye tested ask to see the certificates. Also if possible meet the breeder and they're dogs before you even start looking at puppies. Go to dog shows in your local area if possible & talk to the breeders.

Most importantly everyone should do some reaserch about the breed and make sure your life style suits owning a husky before buying one,a good example of this if you love you garden (as Rae said don't get a husky) We had a lovely garden and nice plants in pots on our decking when we got our first sibe now we have no garden and no pot plants, But we decided we loved our dogs more than the garden & plants lol.

  2. Not to mention then there is always the issue of some Breeders making up fake results just so their kennel, pride and ego’s remain intact.

I find this a strange comment - I don't know of any that would stoop that low and if they did they they certainly are not ethical. However if you were concerned you could always sight the original certificate.

Some breeders are open and honest but everyone has skeletons in their closet.

…….. After all we are all human.

Yep I'm human but I definitely do not have any breeding skeletons in my closet. That is not to say that I would tell the whole world IF I had an issue but I would most definitely tell anyone considering purchasing a puppy or using a stud.

I'm with you there Sheri yes we are only human  I have only had the one litter no skeletons there and don't intend to have any either.

I love this breed too much and will always try to improve on my dogs, and be open and honest about my dogs :cheer:

  3. hi all,

our 8 month old pup gave us a bit of a fright early friday morning, when he woke us up by being sick beside the bed.

straight after the happened he lost all of his body functions and rolled onto his side and stopped breathing.

my other half realised this straight away and started to push chest together to allow him to get some air. he wouldn't open his mouth i had to forcelly open it up for him and checked his air way which was ok. straight away i ran up the emergency vet and rushed him up there, lucky its only 15 minutes away from us.

the vet check him out by the time we got there he was breathing but was still having problems and was more alert than before.

they kept him over night and in the morning they xrayed his chest to see how his lungs and heart were.

the xrays showed that there is fulid on the lungs and his heart is normal size for his age. so the vet has put this episode down to pneumonia, but is a little unsure why he passed out and stopped breathing.

anyway he is on antibiotics for 2 weeks then has a check up xray in 2 weeks time to see if it has cleared up.

has any one else had this problem before?

Your situation was a little more scary than mine :cheer:

my 4 sibes have had pneumonia as well my boy went down with it really bad he was in such bad way that when the vet checked his chest thought he had his Stethoscope around the wrong way as he couldn't hear his heartbeat that's how badly he was congested the poor boy was my youngest girl 2 and a half was not as bad as diesel but still quite ill, my other 2 girls however only had a touch of it. they also had 2 weeks of antibiotics and they're fine now.

3 other dogs in our street that I know of have had the same thing :cheer:

  4. Im not saying it was failed DUE to staining, who ever the vet was said that the staining occured due to the issue resulting in the failed eye test.

maybe you misunderstood or i did, what i am saying is failing an eye test before or after eye staining occurs have absolutely nothing to do with each other. maybe as you got this information through someone else the information was muddled somewhere along the line. i am not sure that the person that has this dog if you tell her maybe would not appreciate everyone talking about their dog.

Have to agree with you Sue isn't that against forum rules??

No this isnt against forum rules because in this case the owner has given permission for the thing to be spoken about but even if they hadnt nothing has been said here to identify the owner or the dog.

well I find that very interesting as there were a couple of posts removed from the sibe thread even though, no kennel, website or person's name was ever mentioned. :rainbowbridge: I don't see the difference?

  6. My brother's lab has developed nasty hot spots on her backside. She is fed on BARF. He lives in Canada so she is inside a lot and it is warm and dry.

The vet is suggesting drugs but Graeme is wondering whether he could use tea tree oil or tea tree lotion or cream on them. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I promised I would get advice from the experts i.e. all of you.

I have a boy who is very prone to hotspots, we use rectinol it's a cream for heamorroids we swear by that we've been using that for years, also tinea powder is also very good we've just used it on our boy and they dried up by the next day.

We also found out our boy has an allergy to beef so we have him on a salmon based kibble and he's not getting as many it's the humid weather that's when he'll have an out break but during last winter he had none at all.

Good luck they are horrible things :)

  7. .Would you feel that paying 4 times as much for one over the other is justified and if so which one. ?

I think I'd go with A, there's something about Kangaroo that in steering me away from B

No if they were equal I wouldn't like to pay 4 times as much.

2.Would you choose to try the most expensive or the cheapest first ?

I would probably try A first ,so if that's the most expensive that's the one I'd go with

    3. Do you choose your dog food based on something else?

my boy has an allergy to beef he gets hot spots so I have him on a salmon based kibble that one is expensive but hot spots are awful and if I can do something to make his life more comfortable then that's what I would do.

I've got my dogs on pro plan best salmon based that suits my boy,

I think once you find a product that works for your dogs stick with it, my dogs get vegies and chicken or raw meaty bones as their dietas long as my dogs are healthy in good condition have enough energy that's good enough for me

    Cheers :o

  8. Hi Midol you've been given excellent advice just remember small puppies have small attention spans so small training sessions often and end with something fun.

Toilet training as a general rule take him outside as soon as he wakes up, after play, after dinner, before bed and if he's an in door dog he'll need to go through the night when you take him out and he does his business lots of praise play with him a little before taking him inside.

You can play tug-a-war with out being rough I find it's a good game for dogs to play with humans I played the game with all my puppies no problems but be gentle if you think about it dogs play with their mouth so this is a good human-dog game where his mouth is no where near your arm or hands.as Mickatie said you never lose the game you must always win.

I agree with pitty lover with the biting growl at him that's what his mum would do.

With his food don't be too concerned when he's hungry he will eat if you keep offering different things you'll have a fuusy eater I've got one believe me you don't want one, good puppy kibble chicken carcases/wings/necks are great and the mince is good also.

I carried my puppies around until they've had they're shots take him to busy places and encourage ppl to pat and talk to him socialization is very important for a young puppy, puppy preschool is fabulous.

Keep having fun with him you're on the right track,

    Cheers

  9. Hi Kifava, huskies are definitely worth it they are beautiful dogs they really aren't hard work at all it's mainly having a lifestyle that is suited to a owning a husky, we can live with the digging we are happy to have no garden,we have holes in the yard you can always fill them in  and the massive amount of coat the drop twice a year but the good FAR out way the bad. you have your heart set on a husky and you are wise too wait until your lifestyle works with a husky you won't regret it they are great with kids and you will enjoy every moment with a sibe, good luck for the future I hope when the time comes you can find yourself a beautiful puppy  just a little advice (you may already know this) make sure sire & dam have been hip scored and have had their eyes tested and ask to see the certificates all good breeders do these tests before breeding and if possible see if you can meet the sire/dam and see what their temperaments are like huskies are friendly and a good temperament is VERY important!!

    Cheers,

  10. HI suzi, I own huskies and I agree with christie a muzzle is not the solution the puppy needs to learn that he/she can't play with her new friend like that so I recommend controled play at all times and perhaps seperate them before your other dog yelps as soon as you can see the husky is being over the top stop the play and let the husky know you will not tolerate that sort of play maybe a stern bad dog and remove the husky and I would take this slow and steady huskies like to dominate and will push the boundry anytime it has an opportunity and they are never too young to show this behaviour I had a litter last november one of my girls wanted to dominate her litter mates pretty much as soon as she could walk and the older she got the more cheeky she become and wouldn't submitt to her mum or my 2 older dogs so I placed her in a one dog home as I felt she would do exactly what your puppy is doing.

I'm just wondering what sort of information you have about huskies, what the breeder may have told you about the breed and dealing with these type of situations, I would be happy if you would like to pm me and I'd be happy to give you some advice about your problem & things that you can do so you can enjoy your puppy instead of what you're experiencing I have some great info on disc about huskies which I'd be happy to post to you and even talk to you over the phone if that helps please don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to talk,

    I hope this helps

    Cheers,

    Michelle

  11. hi again, I feel the need to clear up some things,

Kaywoman68 you're right to a degree huskies can be a problem if you don't have the time to put into them they are easily bored so they need excersie as any breed does they need training and you need to be creative to keep their attention and their grooming isn't much until they dump their coat, but they are a wonderful companion they really are a loyal loving breed but as I said in my previous reply they are not suited to everyones lifestyle.

I agree with lillysmum she made some great points, however you can't compare a husky left home all day everyday to other breeds, it's in their nature to want to escape and explore & they also want to be with their humans that's what they were bred for not all breeds have the nature & curiosity of a husky so advice from husky owners are the ppl you need advice from please feel free to pm me kifaya anytime I can give you my phone number & we can have a chat I have some information that I have burnt onto a disc which I sent out to all the ppl who enquired about my litter I had recently which is a good honest look at the husky living with a sibe, training etc and 10 questions to ask yourself about your lifestyle to see if a husky will fit into your family I'd be happy to send a copy to you if you like.

Also the NSW Siberian Husky club has a website www.shcnsw.org.au there's lots of info also info about husky rescue and you will be able to contact other husky owners the ppl on the committe will be more than willing to help you with any advice you need or I'd be happy to help you anytime.

    Cheers,

  12. Hi there I wouldn't recommend getting a husky if it's going to be left alone all day every day they were bred for company as well as hauling cargo & a bored husky can be distructive digging holes chewing on things etc and the breed is known for being escape artist because that's their nature, many huskies end up in rescue and escaping is one of the reason for it. Not all sibes will try to escape mine never have but I have 4 so there's plenty of company for each other but I'm able to be home with them much of the time as I have a neck injury so they are also company for me but I wouldn't recommend buying 2 to keep each other company 2 bored sibes can be double distruction. Sibes are a beautiful breed they are loyal and loving to their family unfortunately they are not suited to everyones life style.

Some may disagree with me but from the research I've done over the years the majority of websites and books etc with say if the dog will be alone all day everyday then a husky is not for you.

I had a litter of puppies last year and my first question to all my enquires was will the puppy be alone much of the time if so I told them straight out that I'd like my puppies to be in homes where some one will be home much of the time of course they don't need some one there every minute of every day a person with a part time job would IMO be able to successfully own a sibe.

    Hope this helps

  13. Hi have you tried advantix it's wonderful it also protects against ticks I have found it to be the best product I've ever used and I have many friends who have switched also and love it especially ppl with retrievers frontline, frontline plus and advantage were tried by all these ppl changed to advantix problem solved, one curly coated retriever had to waer a tshirt in the summer as he scratched all the time and pulling out his coat in the process they now use advantix and this summer was his first without a tshirt although he did look very cute :) it also replels mosquitoes, sandflies also larval flea stages are killed in the surroundings of Advantix treated pets.

It might cost a little more than advantage & frontline but worth every penny.

  14. HeyKatie why not try one of those room freshners like I've got the one that squirts out the smelly stuff it can be as often as every 9 minutes my sibes sneeze when they get to close I remember it's squirted you a couple of times  if you point it in the direction where she jumps from a few squirts in the face might just do the trick.

she's a naughty little monkey isn't she  if you can't get her pooing habits back to normal you might have to go back to basics as suggested in other replies put her in her crate while not supervised.

    Shell.

  15. thank you holly that's great advice really appreciate it I'm trying pro plan I it's a salmon based kibble for sensitive skin & stomach so far so good he's been on it for a week, so far he's going really well but I'm keeping a eye on him I use advantix for flea control it's the best product I've ever used and his diet at the moment is a chicken frame and half a cup of the new kibble & veggies but every second day he's having a kibble free day he's a little on the fat side at the moment

  16. Hi I've switched to advantix for some months now and highly recommend it as it also protects from ticks my boy picked up a brown dog tick in our back yard and this product was recommend by many ppl and I know of ppl who had lots of trouble controling fleas switched to advantix and no more fleas, it protects from paralysis ticks, brown dog tick & bush tick, prevention of fleas reduces the incidence of flea allergy dermatitis, larval flea stages are killed in the surrondings of advantix treated pets,

the control of lice trichodectes canis linognathus setosus for 6 weeks

repelling & killing of sand flies

the other great thing about this product it repells mosquitoes so therefore takes away some risk with heart worm I was told you don't need to use heartworm prevention at all but I still give them a monthly tablet just to be on the safe side

This product doesn't treat worms but I would recommend using this product for fleas/ticks and a another product that treats heart & intestinal worms

    Cheers,

  18. Hi sheltiesrule, I didn't know what hot spots were either until my boy got the first one when they get hot spot they loose some of their coat around where the hot spot is it looks like red sore which left too long can turn into a really nasty sore and if they are able to lick the area will get puss and fester and can take ages to clear up.

Usually they get these spots from an allergy to food, a zinc deficiency and if they are prone to hot spots the humid weather doesn't help either.

    Hope that answers your question,

    Cheers,

    Michelle
