  3. Me :( I've had two dogs with it. Dreadful disease and mortality rate is extremely high whether treated or not, depending on how low the platelet count gets and other factors.

What do you want to know Wazzat? Please don't tell me you have a dog diagnosed with it?

Thank You , yes we had a dog diagnosed, had a 0 count platelets, and was 0/4 (4 thrombocytes seen in 20 high power fields) for two days on day six went to 30 and was allowed home on Pred and Az, one treatment on vinicristine.

We are hoping that as day 8 the count was 120 next week it will be better, she is very dopey no doubt due to the high drugs, but we are hopeful we can wean her off once the immune system stops attacking the platelets. Our vet has stated she has a good chance and as this dog has cheated death before we are hopeful we can do it again.

Its hard to keep her appetite up, that's my only complaint, please tell me more on the high mortality rate, I read its treatable and worth the fight ??

  4. Looking for anyone who may have had a dog with Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT)

Basically is a very serious autoimmune disease in which a dog's body attacks its own blood platelets as though they are a pathogenic bacteria or virus. Thrombocytopenia is the technical word for low platelet count.

Platelets are components of blood produced in bone marrow. They are critical to blood clotting during what is called primary hemostasis -- the clotting that takes place immediately after an event that damages a blood vessel.

When the body's platelet count is depleted, severe bruising or uncontrolled bleeding can occur. Excessive bleeding and bruising can lead to anemia (a low red blood cell count), and if left untreated, death can result.

  8. Also, wouldn't the breed need to be recognised by the ANKC to be able to legitimately breed from them? I don't know the answer, which is why I'm asking.

There is a process you go through to get ANKC recognition. I don't know the ins and outs of it but I think it is outlined on the website. As far as I know it is fairly straight-forward as long as the breed has KC registration elsewhere in the world and a standard to use as a template (or to simply adopt).

The breed must be recognised in its country of origin and by the Kennel Club that the ANKC recognises for that country.

I love the idea of new breeds being established here but if you are new to purebred dogs you need to proceed carefully and take advice ONLY from the ANKC. The right kind of pedigree must be provided with the dog, if the breed is not recognised that has to be done and it's not a short process.

Go straight to the horse's mouth and get ANKC advice. The next challenge will be getting a quality import. If you have no credentials in confromation or performance sport, my honest advice is to get those FIRST.

Its not hard don't let others tell you it is, and I had no credentials other than a good honest background and an ability to get things done! Its how you approach the situation and dot the Is and cross the Ts, happy to help in any way I can, having helped many others get New Breeds into the Country. The ANKC were very helpful and can help where needed, some rules have changed but people will still help, its just finding the right ones, feel free to email me on [email protected]

  9. ...and let's not forget the often common occurrence of adult dogs and bitches becoming sterile after crossing the equator. It happens!

    Oh so true. +1.

Mine didn't come sterile from crossing the equator but his semen count was very low, we decided not to pursue treatment and thus imported semen, this time on my dogs I had the semen collected at an early age, just in case when they get here the same thing happens.

  10. I'm starting to think more and more about the possibilities of importing to expand my lines. I don't have any money to do it in the near future, but I want/ need to know the rough estimates of costs and what you think is better - ie: do you import just the semen, import the dog or import a bitch in dam?

One of my main concerns is that our lines in Australia always seem to end up in the same spot and I think we need to start expanding. I want to go overseas to see the dogs to help me make the choices rather than just going on what breeders say / show over the internet.

For those of you that have done it before - what led you to your decision? How did you go about it and are you happy with your choices.

Most likely - importing will be occurring from the US.

I have imported both semen and dogs from the USA, my choice was dependant upon the limitations to how many dogs I could own, having said that, I have males who are living abroad and I can access the semen from them when I want to and had them collected at an early age and some stored here. It really depends upon individual circumstances and the people who may want to user your dog and your willingness to let others use your dog

the only thing I would advise wt=ith the USA, get it all in writing what you will be paying for, I was charged for per Km vet trips, faxes, lunch stops etc and all sorts of payments which actually would have made importing a dog not that much dearer.

  12. good luck all :)

I also have a litter due of Cavaliers on the 21st

Congratulations to everyone forward to seeing puppy pics, My male in Norway has sired a few litters, but Im guessing that doesn't count here lol

We have done a repeat mating Annata, the first born Xolo in Oz, is now nine months old and a BIG handful.

  13. Hi guys, looking for a little info here while I'm waiting for the vet to get back to me.

I have a bitch due to whelp today, we had three matings and so far the pregnancy has been totally text book until this last week.

On Sat she had an obvious temp drop from 37.9 to 36.9, she became restless and started nesting her whelping box. We waited thinking this was it and then nothing. Took her into the vet on Monday and got an ultrasound and prog test done. Everything looked fine and my vet said she had at least another 36 hours to go.

We continued taking her temp, which stayed steady until yesterday morning when it dropped again from 37.9 to 37.0, she also lost her mucous plug and began heavy panting and restlessness last night. She was very uncomfortable and this time we thought for sure she's ready to go and once again she's stopped everything this morning.

We're debating booking her in for a c section tomorrow as her grandmother didn't go into labour with her largest litter either and my little girl has at least 7 possibly 9 puppies on board.

    Thanks in advance

    following, good luck

  14. Sorry haven't posted on here as we have had a few issues with our mum and babies

On June 20 we welcomed to the world 7 beautiful shih Tzu babies. 4 girls 3 boys.

Mum was quite unsettled and overwhelmed at first she layed on one of the tiny girls. Luckily we were there and noticed a puppy under her , pup wasn't breathing and had no heartbeat. A little bit of doggy CPR and mouth to mouth and I am extremely glad to say I managed to revive the puppy.

great work bel and congrats, it seems June has been a slow month and not a very good one, we should all be thankful that we have what we have .
