Greyhound Advice

Recommended Posts

Depends on the problem. I find that having a vet who has experience with sight hounds is helpful. For any surgical stuff I tend to go for greyhound vets (due to the issues they can have with certain types of anaesthetics). For routine stuff (vacs etc) any good vet should be OK. Do your research, ask lots of questions, and if you are not confident of the answers try another vet (this is true for all breeds, not just greys!)

Just while I have you "greyt" people's attention. I'd like to ask just how important having a greyhound expert for a vet is? Is this an absolute neccessity?

NOT absolutely essential, but a GOOD idea..... We have Scottish Deerhounds..... VERY similar to Greyhounds in most respects.

They do have some Vet-type issues... bit delicate about anaesthetics, ( knew I'd spell that wrong... ) because of their white blood cell count...

all sight-hounds are the same.

Where do you live ? if in the East of Melbourne we can put you to some good Vets.

Otherwise look for a vet who specialisses ( spelling AGAIN... ) in racing Greyhounds.

Oh, aren't they the bestest dogs? More like bluddy big cats really.

I got my first greyhound about two months ago now. She will eat anything and everything and I have to be really careful she doesn't knock off everyone elses tea. No matter how much she gets she always looks for more.

I feed Sophie two cups of Eukanuba every night with either a tin of sardines, two boiled eggs or some of what my other dog is having, usually Nature's choice or Chunkers, or whatever roast was on at work the day before with some vegies.

Every morning she gets either two chicken frames and bikkies, or 16 necks or leftover roast and veg or mince that I mix up with rice and bikkies and vegies and stuff, but it has to be warmed first, she refuses to eat cold vegies.

For treats and little extras they get steamed chicken dim sims or cheese sausages (wastage from work) or beef jerky. They just love jerky and would happily eat their weight in all three.

I worry that mine is too skinny but apparently she is just right with the last two ribs showing.

Now if I can just work on her little neuroses and penchant for stealing underwear and reading glasses, and, well everything in the house really and including inside the house on a zoomies lap......

We have Scottish Deerhounds, very like Greys in temperament ( I THINK...... )

Your "skinny" bit is right, you should be able to see the last 2 ribs.... on our Deeries you should be able to feel the last 2 ribs.

NO way you can see with all the coat......

Stealing...... one of our Deeries does this, steals my ( used, of course.... ) socks...... ( YUCK.... ) and my reading glasses, never damages them, just leaves them in her bed. Never steals anything else..... mobile phone, TV remotes, books... all safe... just socks and specs....... no doubt Freud would have a field day with the meaning of this.

Perhaps she wants to see why my socks smell so bad...... :cheer::birthday::confused:
