Dog Training Myths

 Share

Recommended Posts

I'm doing some study in behavioural medicine at the moment and need a bit of quick help from the forum.

I'm trying to construct a list of common myths relating to dog training and learning (not wanting to start a debate about whether or not they are true - just need a list of ideas).

If you've got one, I'd love to hear it.

Some example of the things I'm after:

"He is deliberately disobeying - he knows what is expect of him"

"He knows he has done something wrong"

"There are no bad dogs, only had owners".

A few for starters:

"If I discipline him he won't love me any more"

"Obedience training will turn my dog into a robot with no spirit". I just love that one.

"You have to alpha roll a dog before he'll respect you"

"If I let my dog sit higher than me he'll think he's the alpha"

"You have to be really tough and discipline a dog that displays aggression"

You must feed your dogs after yourself otherwise it will not see you as pack leader

I was rather confused the first time I was told this. How does the dog know which meal is my dinner? The dogs sit there and watch me eat breakfast, lunch, and countless snacks without being given any, yet if I eat my dinner after them they think they are above me???

My favourites are the really old ones;

-If you bite the dogs ear it will respect you

-If you spit in the dogs mouth it will respect you.

I just love those ones lol

play growling is aggression

my dog is 100% trustworthy around children

herding dogs are only good for one thing-herding

you cant keep working dogs in the house as they wont work

you cant treat working dogs as pets as they wont repect you

herding dogs chase children and you cant stop them

you cant teach an old dog new tricks

You cannot train certain breeds

A biddable dog is a smart dog, an independent dog is a stupid dog

If you let your dog sleep on the bed (couch, inside, whatever) he will dominate you

In fact, I think all the dominance theorising that humans are so fond of would be a paper all by itself. Just about anything a dog does or doesn't do gets put down to dominance these days. I think leadership is important, but my dogs do not spend their entire lives plotting to take over my household.

Also, check out the "spitting in a dog's mouth" thread in the puppy forum. There are some shockers in there, although one or two may not be printable for your paper.

Dogs learn best at obedience clubs.

All puppy classes are great.

My dog is not biddible.

My dog will not bite.

But I do train my dog for an hour........once a week.

My dog loves me, and would not happy living anywhere else.

My dog is just being friendly.

My dog is well trained (when at home).

My dog is deaf sometimes.

Guest Willow
my dogs do not spend their entire lives plotting to take over my household.

My cats already have that one covered :offtopic:

"He chews stuff when I go out because he is angry with me"

"He knows how to sit, he won't do it because he's being stubborn"

"he's being stubborn" (he's probably just confused!!!!)
