Puppy Problems

Animallover, they are smart little dogs but he is a baby. He has learned something.. just not what you wanted.

One important tip about getting them outside is to let them get there on their own four paws.. they have to learn to find their way to the door all by themselves. That way if they start to head for the door you get a hint that they need to go out.

If you spot him getting ready to go inside, rather than yelling "NOOOOO" and startling him.. try yelling his name in a positive way and heading for the back door with him following.

And as I said, if you can't watch him, put him where he IS allowed to go.

Provided you take him out when he wakes, after he eats, after playing and after he gets excited, once an hour should be enough. If he hasn't gone after a couple of minutes, then take him back inside.

Go down the library and borrow a copy of a book called The Perfect Puppy.. its really good for a lot of this stuff. It also has some very good advice about the importance of ensuring that all his experiences with other dogs are positive at this age. I highly recommend you read it.

how can you judge me yes Rascal was my dog but he choose my sister he is still under the same roof as me so its not like he was taken to the pound or given away, He simply choose my sister or better yet he loves my mum more then anyone. I believe the dog chooses who it likes more and that just happens to be my mum and sister. I do not believe its healthy for any animal to be inside all day every living creature needs sunlight. This family is mainly outside all day anyway so why have a puppy inside all day when were outside almost all day. Yes Einstein had some problems and i did take him to the vet and he got blood work up for diabetes etc all came back negative. The vet said there was nothing wrong with his thyroid. The vet said he is completely healthy other then his bad heart he got from the paralisis ticks. I know my dogs all too well Einstein was just putting Bomber in his place which he has now and hasn't touched him since. So what your saying is dogs do not have any dominancy traits at all. If i remeber correctly dr harry cooper said the meat rolls were ok food for dogs, Not everyone can afford the real expensive food for there animals you know. So if they need very expensive food then your saying only the rich can own animals. I'm on the pension here so i have to be very careful with my money, I'm not saying that my animals don't get cared for they do but some people can't afford to waste money. Like some people rush there dogs or animals into the vet for something that they could have fixed at home, Vets aren't cheap people. I've spent over $2,000 on EInstein in vet bills and haven't regreted it were some people just pay $35 and get them put down ortake them to the pound. So what your saying is i'm a bad dog owner. I've came here for some help and all that seems to be happening is bad mouthing. Just say it rich people should own dogs and people on the pension don't deserve to own animals. People try there best to give there animals the best live they can some just can't spend thousands or millions to do so.

What utter nonsense. What on earth are you talking about? You are replying to statements I didn't even think of, let alone say in my post. Why you brought up all that nonsense about not taking the chi to the pound and dogs needing sunlight I couldn't begin to fathom.

I hope the little puppy does ok. The poor little baby can't fend for himself and it seems you are not happy with him in any way. Please consider rehoming him to someone who understands the breed and is prepared to do what is needed for this pup.

You claim you want assistance and advice but experience shows you take absolutely no notice of any advice people offer you.

On that note I'm outta here. I remember the sheer frustration of the last episode with one of your dogs and don't wish to revisit it.

Puppies need puppy food not poor quality adult dog food. Any puppy food would be better than what you are feeding him, chicken necks excepted.

You are going to turn a gentle little Cav into a very frightened sick dog who will bite to protect himself as obviously you won't protect him. HE'S A BABY.

Suggesting that a baby cav can pull any child into a kennel is absolute rubbish. What the hell is a baby cav doing in a kennel anyway?

Give him back or rehome him to someone who cares before you ruin him completely.

PS Get a stuffed toy for your adult dogs to chew up not a baby Cav.

<All i'm saying is this dog is nothing like they say about the breed they say there intelligent, fast learners, gar to please i'm not finding this to be true with Bomber his the complete obbisite. I take him outside every 10 minutes sometimes he will go and sometimes he won't. He won't even go outside on his own i have to pick him up which then if he knows his going outside he runs from me.>

You are describing the behaviour of a confused and scared little pup. :(

Take a deep breath, Animal Lover. No one is saying that only rich people can own dogs :) but merely suggesting that dog food roll is NOT a healthy diet for a little pup. That the food is designed for puppies does not make it good for them - Pal makes wet puppy food and its total crap! If you want to feed dog food roll at the very least get a good brand (they are not hugely expensive) like Scotties. It's not as good as it used to be but its still a lot better than other brands on the market. It is preservative free too - our breeders used to feed it occassionally.

http://www.scottys.com.au/index.html

You also mentioned you were feeding puppy milk - pups dod not need puppy milk at all in their diets so just give him some fresh water instead.

I don't think anyone is saying dogs don't have an instinct to dominate younger pups - I'm sure many dog, my husky is one of them.

When I bought my little beagle home at 8 weeks we knew we had to supervise her with my husky to make sure he didn't dominate or bully her. Just because it is his instinct to dominate her DOES NOT make is acceptable behaviour.

We kept my pup and my older dog seperated when we weren't there to supervise - they could still see each other but could not phsyically interact. If my husky was too rough or dominant towards the pup he was told off and they were seperated - it didn't take long for him to learn he had to be gentle with her and would not get away with any dominating behaviour. When my pup was big enough to be left alone with him and they were getting along well in supervised play we left them alone together for short periods.

I would recommend you get your pup a crate so he has a safe place to go where other dogs do not have access to him - think of it like his own bedroom.

Hope this helps.

thankyou huski that has helped he was and still is being supervised around Einstein the attacks happened right infront of us , We said No Einstein in a raised voice as this works with him and sent him to his kennel. i've been feeding him pedigree dog roll. He seems to doing alright with it i did try him on vip but they gave him the runs. We have just got a baby cot and modified it for him to stay in that when he can't be supervised.

I wouldn't recommend pedigree or VIP - really, a better option if you don't want to go for a super premium dried food like Royal Canin, eagle pack, etc is Optimum - its not too expensive and you can get it from coles. They have a brand for puppies too - its not too bad and would be far better for the pup than puppy food roll. We would also feed a chicken neck or a bit of raw mince with the dried food - puppy food roll is really not neccessary.

A crate would be better than the baby cot because the pup can chose to go in it whenever he wants to. However, it may also be a good idea to investigate getting a puppy play pen - much bigger space than a baby cot and he can have his dinner, play with his toys etc in there with out being pushed around by the other dogs.

Puppies will get stressed out if older dogs are dominating them and you will find that because of this stress they will be harder to train and teach things to. Think of your puppy as a baby who needs to have positive socialisation experiences with other people and dogs - yelling at the pup for toileting inside, letting the other dogs dominate him etc are not positive experiences. You want your pup to trust you and learn that if he does what you ask him to do, he will be rewarded.

thankyou huski i will get some Optimum puppy dry food this thursday when i get paid, Is it still alright to feed him dog roll at night or should i cut it out and feed dry food and minced meat with some grated carrot.

As long as your pup responds well to the dried food (i.e. no diarrohea) I would cut out the puppy roll entirely - all my pup was fed on when she was eating 3 meals a day was the dried food mixed in with some mince, or I'd give her a couple of raw chicken necks.

What did your puppy's breeder recommend for diet? Our breeder recommended Optimum but we later switched to Royal Canin.

the breeder said he was feeding minced meat and dry dog food he didn't say which brand.

Ok, I would definitely stick to what your breeder advised.

As I said, if you don't want to get super premium dried food (although expensive it does last longer as you don't need to feed as much) Optimum is probably the best supermarket food to get. I would definitely switch your pup back to the dried food and mince. But do try him on a little chicken neck, my pup loved having something to chew on :)

Why don't you ring the breeder and ask what brand of food he was being fed? My pups always go home with very clear feeding and care instructions and enough food to last for a while and toys to help them settle in.

Decide what you are going to feed the dog in the way of dry food, wether you are going to buy a premium discuit or purchase the best quality available from a supermarket and stick to it. I get changing my puppies diet - with the best of intentions and I over feed her, gave her stomach upsets and the worst sloppy stinking sludgey poo's (won't forget the one from the kiwi fruit in a hurry)
