My 9 Week Old Shih Tzu

Hi all, i am new to the forum and thought i would get some help.

i have a 9 week old pure breed shih tzu and i have had her since she has been 5 weeks old, the lady wanted them re homed by then and just wanted the $$$ for the puppies. so i took her home and i have had her first vaccination done. from what i gather she was a back yard breeder the whole house was terrible she had the pups locked in the laundry with a sheet and food thrown on the ground with no bowls and they stunk full of urine.

but the problem i am having is she won't stop biting we have tryed the firm NO and that doesn't work and we have a rolled up newspaper we hit on the ground that makes a loud noise and she still continues to bite and she even hangs on your clothes and bites them and she bites so hard sometimes she draws blood on your feet when we are out at the clothesline the whole time she rips and pulls at your toes and there is no way to stop her what can we do to stop her biting when she won't lisern? and she has lots of toys she has a bunny, chew toys, raw hides etc and she has free run of the house all day so its not like she is bored and is only caged at night in our room for sleeping

any suggestions would be good. also i want to start walking her but should i wait to i have her second vaccination done at 12 weeks? i have been worming her every 2 weeks and the vet said i should worm her every 2 weeks and then when she is 12 weeks i only need to worm and heart worm her monthly is this correct?

looking forward to your advice!

thankyou

Sorry to say you bought your dog from either a BYB or PF as not reputable breeder lets their pugs go before they are 8 weeks old. By the dog leaving her mother and litter mates so early (they are only weaned at 4 weeks at the earliest) she has missed out on valuable antibiodies and valuable socialisation).

You should not walk her untill she has her 3rd puppy vaccination which is at 16 weeks. I would suggest that from 12 weeks you take her to puppy school or socalise her with other dogs that you know are vaccinated in your own home.

With the biting if it sounds like you are doing the right thing and telling her 'No'. Perhaps try making a loud yelp sound like you are being hurt when she bites. If she doesn't take no for an answer remove her from the situation and either put her in the laundry, crate, outside or puppy pen, somewhere away from you, for a good 10 minutes.

Well your vet info is spot on :) I would also wait till she has her 12 week injection before taking her too many places. Probably stay away from areas frequented by unknown dogs.

As for the biting I would be putting her somewhere contained ( not sure if I would use the crate, maybe the laundry) ..away from you every time she bites, also telling her NO.

I am thinking that being taken from her litter mates and mum so early she has missed out on the lessons about biting from mum and fellow pups.

Good luck and hopefully she outgrows this stage.....quickly :laugh:

Hi Supersize

Empathise ! Have a look through thread puppy biting, nothing working - I posted this initially and there are many helpful comments there.

We take our 10 wk old on little walks where we control everything he sniffs, sees, etc - he 'chats' to a dog down the street when we meet him with his owner, but we know he's been vaccinated. We just don't go very far. They don't really need it just yet, we just like to get him out and used to noises, cars and the general world outside.

Very good advice, except there is the option of either having her 12 week injection (c5) and then there is no need for a 16 week shot.. vets are just making $$$ by asking for 3 sets of vaccinations.

If you do this option, then you can get her out and socialise her earlier

hi all,

Thanks for all the advise it means a lot to me, i have also been letting her run inside and she usually takes herself to the toilet but as she has learnt to use the steps in the lounge room she keeps peeing and pooing in the lounge room on the carpet and i say no and she still hasn't listened to me but as a result i have put her into her create for time out!

i know she is purebred as i seen both parents and previous pups from the parents and even my vet at the Animal welfare league says she is purebred , i know i should of probably reported her but i found her homes for all the puppies and when i seen my girl i just fell in love with her and had to have her she is beautiful, i have tryed the squealing every time she bites and she turns around and just barks at me, how much does it usually cost for puppy Pre school and what's involved

i know she was taken too young but the lady just wanted them gone and the money but i do have chew toys and raw hides and plenty of toys for her to play and chew with and we take her out side every 2 hours and take her for drives in the car and plenty of socialization as my mother bought her brother they get to play with each other, and i live with my mother in law and she has a maltese and they play all day so she has company.

thanks again!

Umm, no she has not missed out on "antibodies", not if she got colostrum from her Mum in the first couple of days after whelping.

Pups can be weaned earlier than four weeks also.

She has missed out on important interaction with mum and littermates. This is the time that bite inhibition is learnt. Munch on Mum or another pup too hard, and you soon get a correction that you understand!

i know she is purebred as i seen both parents and previous pups from the parents and even my vet at the Animal welfare league says she is purebred

The only way you would know for sure is if you have a registered pedigree for her.

Just a quick update tonight i growled at her when she was biting toes and she seemed to understand and stopped biting straight away this was suggested to me by some DOL people and it worked so thank you! it means a lot and she is obviously learning right from wrong. but will see how she goes now i know this behavior has got to stop. someone suggested puppy pre school would this benefit her and whats involved and the cost?

Puppy pre-school for my dog was organised through my Vet and was about $85 for three nights.

This was in Melbourne so may be different where you are.

It was held at the vet's place and were given talks on basic dog care while the dogs got

to play. My dog loved it.

As well as the DOL link there's a great website where you can learn all about puppys & dogs. www.dogstardaily.com

You can download Dr Ian Dunbar's book 'Before You Get Your Puppy' for free. If you explore the site you will find plenty of articles & videos to watch if you use the search bar & type in dog training videos. Also toilet training etc.

As you have been told she was too young & missed out on learning bite inhibition from her littermates. It's not too late as Dr Dunbar says it needs to be learnt by 4-5 m/o.

As for toilet training, I would be taking her outside after she wakes up, has eaten or had a drink, after playing & every hour in between. Don't scold her for going in the house. It's a natural bodily function & if you yell at her she will be frightened of you & go where you won't see her. I wouldn't give her free access to the whole house until she is reliable. One room at a time starting with a room with an easily cleaned floor such as bathroom or kitchen. When cleaning up the mess you need to get rid of the smell because she will continue to go to the same place. Use an enzyme cleaner available at pet shops & supermarkets.

Thanks for the advise, i have found a puppy pre school at southport for $8.00 a session and it runs every Monday night from 6.30pm to 7.30pm so i might join it when she receives her second vaccination.

she has been running the kitchen and has had no accidents today. so that is good. i will go read the link now thanks for that :)
