My Boy Has Hurt His Leg

I always keep a "Domoso" roll on in my box which you can get from Saddlerys (used for horses and dogs) - contains anti-inflamatory and pain killing ingredients and shouldn't affect the tummy like tablets. I've seen it work wonders on Cleo.

I use this too.Got it from vets when wolfie had bursas on his elbow joints.

Hope he's ok today Erny :happydance2:

Is there any chance it could be his cruciate ligament? Henschke did this when he stepped sideways onto a thistle at the same time he was doing a poop and leaped straight into the air!

Luckily it wasn't a full tear; the vet only thinks a minor one.

He was favouring his leg, whining and not putting it down. Apparently it's very painful and if it's a full tear requires surgery.

In the end we just kept him quiet, didn't walk him for a week and he was right as rain.

I'd take him to a vet first before a chrio - because they can give you pain meds and anti-inflammatories if it is his cruiciate ligament.

Dmso is really good for swelling, strains etc, does give them breathe that smells like they have been munching on a hundred garlic cloves though!

Hope he is okay and he hasn't torn a cruciate or damaged his back! those roo bounces are a little bit of a problem sometimes Mandela! Lots of fun when they go right, not when they don't. Is he abducting his knee outwards when walking at all? or walking normally, but limping? Quite often with a cruciate tear they abduct the knee out to aleviate then weight put on the knee. If he is worse after rest it may be a strained mucsle or sprained joint they normally improve a little when they are warmed up(by walking only!) and much worse after periods of rest.

Good luck

Not sure if someone else has suggested this Erny, as haven't read the whole thread, but don't forget that ice is really beneficial for strains and sprains in the first 12 - 24 hours after the injury happens.

Slap an ice pack or some frozen peas wrapped in a teatowel on him, every few hours, for 5 - 10 min at a time, and you'll reduce the swelling and the pain.

Hope he's OK.

Ari.g - Because he's had stomach issues (believed to be ulcers) of late,

What sort of issues Erny?

Is there a thread somewhere? I'm interested as Esme has a very sensitive tummy.

Thanks everyone .... and Oonga .

He doesn't seem to be as sore on it, but it is still 'wrong'. It looks a bit weird sometimes, the way it moves as he walks. I could guess at numerous things (including cruciate rupture) but that's all it would be - guessing. So I'll wait until I get to see Charles. Fingers crossed.

Of course in the meantime, he has no concept of the words "take it easy" and even just taking him out to the toilet on lead represents to him the chance of fun training in the back yard. Nong.

Oh God Erny - things have to start picking up for Mandela soon, poor boy.

Hopefully a bit of rest will be all he needs.

Pink just had 6 weeks off - not much fun keeping the young ones quiet..

Good luck and hope he is better soon.

There is still something very wrong with his leg, albeit that he has not been in the pain that he exhibited that first afternoon and night, IMO indicating the injury is still there but the inflammation has receded. He is still favouring his right hind and when he lays down prefers to lay on his left side to protect the right. I am very concerned. I'm going to ring Charles' clinic on the off chance a time slot has become available for me to bring him in today. But if not, tomorrow morning should tell me more. Somehow, I'm expecting bad news. I'm holding on to the slim hope that this is just because I'm a worry wort.

ETA: I rang, but no luck with getting him in to see Charles today. Appointment is for tomorrow at 9am, so I'll have to wait until then to know more.

:) So sorry to read that Erny

I had hoped that he had improved and you could cancel his appointment.

Poor Mandela he really hasn't had a good start to his health

He does seem to have a strong soul though going by the way he was still so happy and exuberant at the seminar :(

I know it doesn't help him to heal but I have to admire that spirit :p

So sorry to hear he's still not well - such a worry.

Hate to sound ignorant, but as I'm not from that part of the world - is Charles a vet, chiro or bowen person? Just curious as to which way you are going.

Dr. Charles Kuntz is a specialist in small animal surgery.

From his website :

US trained Dr Charles Kuntz offers a full range of soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures ...

Melbourne Vet - Southern Animal Referral Centre

ETA: Rijbiz .... I don't know which way I'm going just yet. Charles is my first port of call and much depends on what he says as to what I do.

Thanks, was curious as I have had on and off problems with Cleo. I have just got home from our first ever Bowen Treatment and I am really pleased with the results so far.

Glad you seem to have had success with the Bowen Therapy.

What is Cleo's ailment?

Nothing major and certainly nothing like poor Mandela. She just doesn't seem to be moving properly on her back leg and the judge commented that she looked sore the other week. As I'm new to Perth and all my "regulars" are in Sydney, I went to a chiro that someone recommended and that seemed to fix the problem but then noticed that she's a bit "stiff" again so asked at my local vet for alternatives.

They recommended a local bowen person who specialises in horses and pets so off we went with an open mind. She manipulated (if you can call it that) her for about 1/2 hour and said the treatment would continue to work for a couple of days as it stimulates the healing system. We shall see, but she definately seems to be moving better unless its my imagination.

I was showing both days this weekend, but I might drop the Saturday to rest her and just show on the Sunday (well it is mothers day) and I will make my final assessment then.

Hi Erny,

I have read all the posts with interest and to me it sounds like your boy may have "popped " his sacrodiliac (sp ) we used to have these things happen with the GSD''s and have to take them to the Chiro to get sorted, whatever it is i hope he comes good soon for you.

I've looked up "sacrodiliac" and can't find anything that tells me what it is. Google doesn't give a spelling option alternative on it either. Are you meaning part of his back bone or something?

I am presuming (if it is this) that it is something that can be "popped" back in - I really hope it is that simple although I'm afraid to hope too hard.
